It's happened before.

I remember many years ago (late 1971 to be exact), when Maurice Chevalier was hospitalized for what would prove to be the final time, his death was prematurely reported by the media - even going so far as to quote what were (purportedly) his last words.

Mark Twain once famously said, "The report of my death has been grossly exaggerated."
