I can't believe something that high profile was done by a straight citizen with that amount of money. Do you have any links, or do you remember where that story first came about?
As I understand it, it's the publisher who pays the contract, but maybe they did something different.
Who is the straight citizen you're talking about? Peter Maas? He wrote The Valachi Papers. That being said I'm sure the money didn't come out of his own pocket. It probably came from the publishing company.
