Watched a double matinee. The First Purge was the first to be shown. Like the sequels after the first movie, it is just gore, killing and mostly of the African American community, once again showing an agenda. I really could not get behind this movie because they could not really build up a character to cling to, but Marisa Tomei can get physical with me anytime she wants to. I give it 5/10
The second movie Sicario Day of the Soldado, was actually better. Not as good as the first movie but still entertaining. I give it 6.5/10
On the movie "Downfall" it is the best movie out there on Adolf Hitler final days. It is in German, and many of the actors give convincing performances.

I've been lazy recently posting my reviews and for that, I apologize. Here's some recent ones I've seen:

UNCLE DREW

I only recently saw the commercial this was based upon and while you have a host of amateur actors (Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, etc.), the film was decent and the story wasn't bad, but it was incredibly predictable and formulatic. In addition, I felt the film started out with some steam but the jokes ran dry after the first 20 minutes or so. Chris Webber seemed to be doing his best Arsenio Hall/Reverend Brown impression throughout and I was tired of Kyrie Irving referring to everyone as "young blood." 4.5/10

THE FIRST PURGE

With the exception of the first installment of this series, I have never been a fan of this franchise. I thought the premise was interesting but it's never truly translated to film as well as I had hoped. This is just another example of it. The story tells of the very first purge which takes place as an experiment on Staten Island. Residents are encouraged to stay and participate and those who do are compensated (the more you purge, the more you'll make). My biggest problem with the film was the social/political commentary of the film. White mercenaries/police officers going into predominately minority neighborhoods to "cleanse themselves." Another race-baiting movie that I think is inappropriate for it's time, given the current high tensions between minorities and the police. 4/10

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

I recently rewatched the original before seeing the sequel, and after viewing both, I've undervalued this franchise. The sequel turned me into more of an Ant-Man fan and Evangeline Lilly killed it as Hope Van Dyne/Wasp. As with any sequel, the characters are already established so we can jump right in with more action and more comedy. The supporting cast is back (namely Michael Pena, TI and David Dastmalchian) to provide their antics and levity. The anti-aging CGI used for both Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer, during a scene earlier in the film set in the 1980's, is incredible. Between the 2, I enjoy the first one slightly more, but this was still a great followup and I'm looking forward to the third. 7/10

SKYSCRAPER

This had a DIE HARD-esqueness to it, just not on that level of quality. I was glad to see Neve Campbell get a gig like this again as I'll always have a soft spot for Sidney Prescott. However, for the most part I felt she was underutilized. Playing the role of mother/wife and with the exception of one or two scenes, is pretty much a bland mother trying to get her kids out of a burning building. The rest of the cast is mediocre, even The Rock. I was glad to see that his character has a physical limitation as it's a nice break from the overly masculine performances we've seen in recent years. The limitation I feel makes him more vulnerable and sympathetic in my opinion. Otherwise, this was a decent summer popcorn flick. 5.5/10

THE EQUALIZER 2

Denzel Washington's first ever sequel in his storied career. I recently rewatched the original to get setup for the sequel, and while the sequel was good, it was predictable (even if the lady sitting next to him didn't find it so); and I enjoyed the first one more. However, the movie begins with a wonderful opening scene on a train in Turkey. More great and brutal action. I love the mannerisms and stoic facial expressions that Denzel portrays in both films. This goes a little bit deeper into his past which I was against. One of the things I enjoyed most about the original was we weren't given a lot of information about his past. He seems to be a mystery. Why does he feel compelled to do right all the time? Why does he help strangers, whom he owes nothing to? Just because he can? I wouldn't mind seeing a trilogy made if Denzel was on board as I'd be down for more of Robert McCall's beat downs! 6.5/10

Just watched 'The Harder They Fall'

Humphrey Bogart's last film before he died. Not a terrible boxing movie. Some of the fights scenes are awful but I think it served the purpose of showing that all of the fights were fixed.

Has anyone scene 'Somebody Up There Likes Me'? I was told it was a good boxing movie with a lot of great scenes filmed in the legendary Stillman's Gym.

MARY SHELLEY

Elle Fanning gives a strong performance as a young Mary Shelley. This film deals with the tragedies in her young life that lead to her ultimately penning the Frankenstein novel (something with which I still need to read along with Bram Stoker's DRACULA). What I admire about Elle is the soft and delicate young women she can portray but then in an instant, she can turn that kindness into a fire you wouldn't expect she is capable of spewing based on her looks alone. Also, this is an interesting story of a young woman trying to find her voice during a male dominated period. 5.5/10

BLINDSPOTTING

The previews for this had me somewhat interested and since the surge pricing went into effect in my area and I wasn't able to see the new MISSION IMPOSSIBLE as a result, I took a flyer on this. It was much better than I expected. I thought this was going to be another anti-cop, racial motivated movie. And while the movie does deal with racial tensions, it doesn't smother the viewer with it. The story is about Colin, a recently released felon who has only 3 days left on his probation before he's completely free of his past crime. During this time late at night, driving home from work, he seems a black man run in front of his truck while stopped at a traffic light. Following him is a white police officer who shots the suspect in the back 4 times. Colin is left with a dilemma: does he involve himself and speak up about the shooting, risking the cops retaliating against him by claiming he violated his parole some how and returning him to jail, or does he remain quite? It's an interesting study about a young man, trying to better himself and stay on the right path while at the same time, having the criminal justice system still hoovering over him like an anvil just waiting to be dropped. 6/10

Director Sean Carter is obviously a fan of classics and do not understand the poor ratings it received.

I give it at least a 6-7 out of 10 or if you rather stars a 3 out of Five .

Can anyone tell which Dirty Harry movie contains this scene: it's near the opening when Harry goes to a store to get coffee and the waitress pours a ton of sugar into it which causes harry to return to the store to find out why. In fact, the store is being held up.

I watched justice League, but didn't see the part when Superman comes back to life. What brings him back to life?

Watched Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which was, at the time, a quite interesting and brave spin on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Coming out in 1994, it predated Scream by two years, so it was probably the first meta horror movie.

The scene where the guy gets killed by the glove coming up through the car seat, which he mistakes for an itchy ball sack, while driving home is something I remembered vividly ever since watching it as a child.

THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME

I really did like the pairing of Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon who's slowly transitioning from SNL to the big screen. These two really feed off of each other and I'm sure the blooper reel would be enjoyable to watch on Blu-Ray/DVD. An original story about a woman (Kunis) who is dumped by her boyfriend, who just happens to work for the CIA. She has no knowledge of this until after their break-up when the people who are trying to kill him, target her as well. Pretty funny movie with some decent action scenes. I did feel the story grew tiresome a little towards the end with the persistent, "who's side is he on" question lingering. 6/10

Watching the Back To The Future trilogy again for the umpteenth time. Great films..

The first 2 I loved, the 3rd one, not so much.

That's normally the case with most trilogy's but i think it's still fun film to watch.. Also surprised that they have never remade this film..

Just watched "TheMan w/ The Golden Arm"..w/ Frank Sinatra & Kim Novak..very engaging.

It was made in the mid 1950s so I'd hardly call it an early boxing flick but I did enjoy it immensely. Paul Newman did a very nice job of capturing the brutish Rocky Graziano. And look for an early scene on a rooftop with a very young Steve McQueen.

Filmed a few years after came "Requiem for a Heavyweight" starring Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason and Mickey Rooney in an excellent adaptation of an earlier teleplay of the same story. A wonderful drama and added real-life boxers like champs Jack Dempsey, Willie Pep and Muhammad Ali (just after he turned pro as Cassius Clay) added a touch of realism.
