(ANSA) - Foggia, May 24 - A local mafia boss and his wife were gunned down in a cosmetics shop at San Severo near Foggia in Puglia Wednesday. The couple were killed by several gunshots, police said. The husband was identified as Nicola Salvatore, 56, and his wife as Isabella Rotondo, 55. The boss, who had a criminal record for drugs, eluded another assassination attempt in December when he escaped with an abdominal wound when he and another drugs convict were attacked with a machine gun. Police said the double homicide was probably linked to another murder in San Severo last October. Bari anti-mafia police are investigating. Puglia's mafia, the Sacra Corona Unita (United Holy Crown, SCU), is Italy's fourth and smallest mafia after Calabria's 'Ndrangheta, Sicily's Cosa Nostra and Campania's Camorra. Yesterday Antonio Petrella, 54, and Nicola Serrelli, of 43 years, uncle and nephew, were killed in the late afternoon in an ambush accomplished on the outskirts of Apricena, in Foggiano, with shots fired from a Kalashnikov, a shotgun and a pistol. One thinks of a settling of scores within the local underworld.

Looks like we might have the beginning of a war on our hands.

In an Italian documentary about the SCU I watched, they said it's the only mafia-type organization that theoretically could be eradicated from the region because, unlike the other 3 (Cosa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta and Camorra), they don't have a long history that makes them go back to some historical aspects of local culture, with many "grey areas": even when it's not outright crime, it's silent complicity by many local citizens who aren't members or associates themselves, but are either afraid or just don't trust the authorities, even the ones who don't take bribes. In the Apulia region on the other hand, the mafia is not THAT well developed, it has been formed in a "real" sense of the word only in the first 80s, when Giuseppe Rogoli started organizing the prisoners (including the ones that were about to be released and therefore could extend their power to the streets), to resist the attempt by Raffaele Cutolo and his camorra to take over the region. Rogoli was backed by the 'ndrangheta boss Umberto Bellocco and succeeded in preventing the camorra to take over, but his organization still wasn't as strong as the other regions, some groups started separating from the main SCU organization and even today experts say that it's incorrect to say that all the mafia in Apulia is SCU, in reality it's just the biggest and strongest, while the others are separate groups with other names.
Anyway, the point is that, being relatively young / recent and not yet solidified as an organization with powerful connections or radicated in local culture, THEORETICALLY they could clean up the region if they really wanted to, it would be much easier than Sicily, Campania and Calabria. But, as usual, they don't want to. Even if the authorities maybe aren't corrupt as a whole, but many of the ones who aren't corrupt, are LAZY, and that's not really better...

@SC
I've always wondered, is this a warning of some kind?? No. I just do this occasionally to resize the summary on the Active Topics page.

State and Carabinieri police dealt a huge blow to the mafia in the area of the southern city of Foggia with the execution of arrest warrants for 30 people in a big operation.
The suspects are alleged members of the Moretti-Pellegrino-Lanza and Sinesi-Francavilla mafia clans.
Around 10 of the suspects are convicts who were already in jail.
The accusations include alleged mafia association, extortion and attempted murder.
According to official case documentation, it is suspected, among other things, that managers, former managers and a former coach of Foggia soccer team were pressured by the mobsters to sign a player.
Foggia are currently second-last in Italian soccer's second tier, Serie B.

Robberies, bombs and war among the clans in Foggia: 16 arrests Attempted murder, detention of weapons, attempted extortion, fires, robberies, detention of explosives: 16 people were arrested in Foggiano with an interforces operation called "Chorus". The arrests - among which there are also some affiliates to the mafia clan Moretti / Pellegrino, the son of Rodolfo Bruno, assassinated in an ambush on November 15, 2018 and Camorra clan of the Panico family (vesuvian hinterland of Naples). This tranche of arrests refers to the attempted murder of a prominent member of the Sinesi / Francavilla clan (Moretti / Pellegrino rival), thwarted by the police on 23 January, after having blocked two cars with three members of the commando on board armed, including the killer who would physically execute the execution.
