I have no way of knowing, obviously, but I would imagine the bosses fury that resulted in Tony and his brother being beaten to death rather than just shot was stemmed in the fact that they were going to jail for what amounted to the rest of their lives and at least partly blamed him.
Under the circumstances I can't say it's too surprising.
