Simply not fair to sieze assets without due process, period.

Quelle horreur!

Every single cent the majority of them earn is blood money.

Even when they are set up with a highly profitable, legitimate, company how do you think they get into that position to begin with? Blood, sweat and tears? Maybe someone else's...

I don't know what goes on in Ireland, nor do I give a fuck. But here in America, you're innocent until proven guilty. Therefore, the government has NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER freezing the bank accounts and placing land liens on FIRST TIME OFFENDERS. And that's exactly what they did to a few of the guys on the lower rung of that indictment. Million dollar liens on houses worth 400k. The prosecutors and judges should be fucking jailed.

I've said this before (although I'm quite sure you don't believe me, but again, at this point, I don't give a shit what your moralist ass thinks of me). But I'm not a wiseguy apologist. The world needs law and order. So if the government has the goods on them, by all means charge them and convict them in a timely fashion. Because here in America, we have what's called a right to a speedy trial. And if they're first-time offenders, and a judge places that kind of hold on a guy with no money (and believe me, half these sheet guys are dead ass broke), that judge should be thrown off the bench.

Blood money in a gambling case. I think you should just enter the Seminary and get it over with. Because if you're going to moralize to that degree, you better be consistent and do it in all walks of life.

I log onto see this woefully ignorant post and I see PB has already taken care of it for me in spades.

Moe I do like you, but you're just picking a fight here with a little faux sanctimony.

Best let this one drop.

It's sad that people are willing to give up all their rights in order to put people in prison, whether those people are really guilty or not. Asset seizure is one of the biggest abuses of police power these days.

The law says that the assets or funds can be frozen if they can directly be linked to the crime under prosecution. If a bank robber steals $50,000 and is caught, those funds can be frozen and he can't use it to hire an attorney. They should not be able to freeze any other assets to prevent him from hiring an attorney.

If you get caught with a kilo of coke in your car, your car gets taken. They view it as a tool used in the commission of a crime. Kind of like confiscating a screw driver from a burglar. The money from these guys was taken because they had no way of justifying it. That said, they coukd argue since its a gambling case, it was used as a tool to further the enterprise; i.e pay winners and shylock.
If they have you on a wiretap discussing how you just bought a house with proceeds from a gambling operation, they will seize it. If you are meeting people in your home to sell drugs or take bets, you are using your home to further the commission of a crime. Trust me, i was on the wrong end of a this back in the day so i know first hand. I dont condone it but i understand it philosophically.

And that's a bank robber. How about putting a freeze on a 30 year old kid's bank accounts AND a lien on his house, and to top it all off he's barely making ends meet and was only earning off a half-sheet to begin with. Oh, and he was recently married with a baby on the way when the case broke. The kid just turned seven!

It happened to one of them. And THAT makes my blood boil. They pick on the poorest and the youngest hoping that they'll find the weak leak because they're broke with no one to help. They drag the poor fuck in front of a Grand Jury, he takes the fifth, they throw immunity at him, he still refuses to talk, so he ends up with an obstruction charge to boot. That young man stood tall, though.

Nah, the Government doesn't stack the deck in their own favor or abuse their own power (especially with those fucking Grand Juries). You try not to be anti-government, then you hear a story like that. It's like Superman kicking a three legged dog. Who you gonna feel for?
