Well, that all depends on how long Vito would have lived. Getting shot and losing Sonny took their toll on Vito's health. Thus, his death (which appears to be in his mid-60s) was sooner than one would expect. Without being shot, I think he would have lived well into his 70s and brought Barzini's plans to naught.
