You've Lost That Lovin Feeling from the '60's. Got two months of Sirius radio with my new car. Have had it one month. Two will be enough. Not paying for it.

I assume it's the Righteous Brothers version. One of the most beautiful love songs ever IMHO.

Whenever we buy a car they usually have a two or three month gimmick with the Sirius and the OnStar or whatever they call it. I never renew either of them, though. Sirius is supposed to be so great, but all of those stations are very repetitive with their selections.

Tell me about it:

In '65, my wife and I took our first long drive, from Brooklyn to Niagara Falls, Canada. It was a real pain in the ass drive in a 40-hp Beetle. Only had a-m radio and only got Top 40 stations. We heard "Satisfaction," "I Got You Babe" and "California Girls" nonstop--so often that I can't bear to ever hear any of them again.

I may be one of the few that enjoys my Sirius in the car. Where else can you listen to "Fly Me to the Moon" by Sinatra, The Beau Brummels singing "Just a Little", George Rafferty's "Right Down the Line", the Scorpions "No one Like You", "Flashlight" by George Clinton, and "It's Raining Men" all in the 30 minutes on the way to the market

I get your point. But if you have a Smart Phone and a car that was built in the past decade you can listen to whatever the Hell you want whenever the Hell you want .

You are right about that. Sometimes I hear these songs on the radio that I forgot about so I put them into my playlist. I bet my playlist is BETTER than yours but I had to pay for it. (Giggle)

You're out of your mind, Lady. You have to see all the retirees in Boca every winter. They come to listen to my Spotify playlists from miles around.

Of course they think that Spotify is a laundry detergent. But that's a different story all together.

I warned you about that. They're very petty. Jimmy left them broke. And instead of being smart and inking a deal with Spotify or iTunes, they're still trying to sell cd's through his website. And even though it's been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the best way to spread the word about an obscure old singer is through streaming, they still think that they're getting robbed. These are not business minded people. And neither was he, for that matter.

I have the Dropkick Murphys Christmas tune "The Seasons Upon Us" blasting out.

Attention TB (my fellow Jackie Wilson fan). Okay, Sinatra and Elvis own the song. But Jackie Wilson's obscure version of "My Way" hits it out of the park. I listened to it five times this morning!

Everything Jackie did was great, PB! Without a doubt, the greatest lead singer of the Fifties. Jackie sang everything brilliantly. He could have been a star operatic tenor with a little training. Many's the time I saw him at the Alan Freed R&R shows--he always put on a great performance, had the girls screaming at the top of their voices. I once read an article that described him as "extravagantly talented." Right!

PB, didn't you once tell me that "To Be Loved" was the wedding song for someone in your family? Great choice. Mine was "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," which was the equivalent of a marriage license--if it wasn't played at your wedding when your bride walked down the aisle, you weren't really married.

Yes, it was my parents wedding song. They were married in the Fall of '58 (they didn't waste any time because I was born a year later ).

And what's funny is, from all of the research that I've done (and correct me if I'm wrong), it wasn't THAT big a hit when it was released earlier that year. And Jackie had only released singles up until that point. I don't think he actually cut an album until the '60s, so it's not like they heard it on an album before it got any radio play. From what I understand, it became very popular at weddings in the early '60s, so I guess they were a bit ahead of the curve.


The Four Aces, or a band?

As you know, my Pop is 85 now. He loves the Four Aces. The lead singer is still alive and still singing if I remember right. I saw them all that long ago on one of TJ's PBS specials.

The Four Aces had the hit record, but "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing" was in the repertory of absolutely every band that played weddings because it was "the official song" for the bride and groom. One of the photos in our wedding album (a standard in every wedding album) is a photo of my bride and me holding hands, with the sheet music for that song as backdrop.

Jackie Wilson was at one time the lead singer for Billy Ward and the Dominos--one of the most talented singing groups of the Fifties. He was succeeded by Eugene Mumford. He sang lead on "Stardust" and "Deep Purple" if you remember those singles. Mumford was a fine singer, with excellent diction, as did many lead singers of the Fifties.

I remember Jackie's solo version of "Stardust." But are you talking about the version from "Goodfellas"? I thought that was Clyde McPhatter singing lead for the Dominoes?

Scratch that, TB. I misread you there. You were saying that Mumford sang lead. McPhatter left for the Drifters much earlier.

That's right, PB. McPhatter was another great lead singer. "Money Honey," "Without Love," etc.

Agreed. The poor guy died penniless here in the Bronx. But ironically, my very favorite Drifters song was recorded without Clyde. Johnny Moore sang lead here.
