You gotta wonder why no one drafted Manziel earlier though? Dallas, Jax, both had the chance. Maybe all that show boating this past year with the hand money and signing gestures reflected his maturity.

You're not a Manziel if you haven't been in jail.

There's a family history there AFAIK, the kid's dad and uncles are all ex cons. Thus the roll em up hand money gestures, he is a punk.

Worry not though, Clowney and Mr. JJ Swatt are gonna have a little something for him when the Browns play Houston. wink

We'll see. It's a coaching carousel in Cleveland, so I need to see the coach on game day before saying whether I like him or not. I was not at all pleased about the search process that netted Pettine, but that process also helped us get rid of a totally inept front office of Lombardi and Banner. I'm cautiously optimistic that new GM Ray Farmer was a real find.

I wish the Browns would have backed up the Brinks truck to Jon Gruden, but they cannot attract top name coaches when they fire coaches every 1-3 years.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite George Costanza quotes when thinking about Browns owner Jimmy Haslam: "He fires people like it's a bodily function."

I'll be surprised if this ends well. About the only news Manziel's not been involved in is attacking girls and crashing his motorcyle like Ben "Evil Knievel" Roethlisberger. I get the feeling Johnny would've really liked hanging around Micky Mantle and Babe Ruth.

Training camps opening today and tomorrow, only about six weeks to kick off. Buffalo Bills for sale, John Bon Jovi part of a group looking to buy them. My pre-season pics for the Super Bowl are Indy and San Fran.

Terry Pegula went to the same high school I did. He was in my uncle's graduating class and is a self-made multi-billionaire. What's funny is that my uncle and his friends don't remember him at all.

If I had to make an early prediction for the Super Bowl, I'll go with the Eagles in the NFC as Chip Kelly was just starting to put together an amazing offensive machine. While DeSean Jackson left the team, Kelly assembled some additional guys from his system in Oregon. Defense will be important for Philly.

The AFC may be open. Peyton is a year older and showed in the Super Bowl that his arm strength is not nearly what it was. The Chiefs made vast improvements under Reid , and like his old team in Philly, a lot will determine on how well his defense can play. I think they can keep scores down though with time of possession, and find their way to the Super Bowl beating the Eagles 33-28.

I purposely never pick them, lest the football gods jinx them. But if Leveon Bell stays healthy, and the offensive line protects Ben, it could be a very good year. Last year on the first offensive series of the first game Pouncey was lost for the season when his teammate hit him from behind accidentally. That was a huge loss for the team.

My pre season picks - before the season starts. 28 players will be suspended for PEDs; 14 will be arrested before the season starts; 3 will die in car accidents; 7 will father childern under dubious circumstances; 1 will commit suicide.

Ray Rice only received a 2 game suspension for using his then-fiancée as a punching bag. Goodell is inconsistent when it comes to administering punishment.

Josh Gordon's appeal from his year-long suspension for a repeated illegal substance abuse violation for marijuana takes place next week. He didn't exactly help himself by getting nailed for drunk driving soon after the suspension was announced.

But in addition to Irsay likely getting off easy, Goodell is not making a move yet against Brown owner, Jimmy Haslam, CEO of Pilot Flying J truck stops, who admitted to criminal wrongdoing in defrauding customers, and agreed to a fine of $92 million and restitution order of $56 million.

It seems that NFL players are held to a much higher standard than the owners of the team.

I've been hearing that Gordon will appeal, but when did he ever get formally suspended? Even though he plays for my team, I hope he gets suspsended indefinitely. He doesn't deserve to be in the NFL. Just like Justin Blackmon, who just got arrested again while on suspension.

Irsay should get a heavier suspension than what Goodell levied against Jim Tressel, when the latter worked for the Colts and the suspension was a result of his NCAA actions.

Klydon, I think Goodell is not heavy handed on the owners b/c he knows he would be biting the hand that feeds him.

With the exception of Jerry Jones, if you suspend an owner and the operation doesn't skip a beat...did it really happen?

In November the Steelers will retire Joe Greene's No. 75. The only other number the Steelers have ever retired is Ernie Stautner's No. 70.

I had the pleasure of knowing Joe and watching him play football at North Texas State University (now UNT). When he was drafted by the Steelers I told friends and family that they could not have made a better choice. He was a superb player and is a really good person.

Surprisingly, although they are not officially retired, there are several other players (such as Franco Harris and Jerome Bettis) whose numbers are not issued to more recent players.

I was surprised to learn of the retirement of Greene's number as the Steelers don't officially retire numbers. But if anyone deserves such recognition it's Greene.

While the numbers aren't "retired," no Steeler player since the retirements of Terry Bradshaw(12), Joe Greene(75), Jack Lambert(58), Franco Harris(32), and Jack Ham(59) have been issued their numbers. Mel Blount's 47 has been reissued a couple of times.

Swann's 88 and Stallworth's 82 have been reissued on occasion. But as receivers today are more commonly selecting jerseys in the teens, these numbers may be withheld in the future.

I just read where Brady Quinn is leaving football to broadcast college games. It's such a shame that these college football players (especially quarterbacks) are all the rage in college, but as NFL draftees they fail. Quinn is a perfect example. Of course, he was drafted by the Browns, not the sharpest organization around. But Tim Tebow was drafted by the Broncos and where is he at today?

Still on the outside trying to get in. Should have never, ever, ever, ever been a first rounder, but that's Josh McDaniels believing his own hype and bullshit as some coaching guru.

It's a shame that Pat Bowlen, owner of the Broncos, had to step down recently because of Alzheimer's. Back when Tebow was selected, there were some very loud whispers in Denver about Bowlen's focus and mental state, especially when he allowed Josh McDaniels to dismantle the franchise in just over a season (that Tebow pick being frosting on the cake).

The Bears have retired a total of 14 jersey numbers. They announced last year that Mike Ditka's #89 would be the final number retired by the franchise. They have the most retired numbers in the NFL.

Off the top of my head I guess the retired numbers belong to Ditka (89), Butkus(51), Nagurski(5?), Red Grange(77), Halas(?), Luckman(?), Payton (34), Syers (40), Piccolo? (41).

I can't be sure of the rest. I'm pretty sure none of the defensive players of the '85 team had jerseys retired. If so, I would guess Singleterry or Dent.

Not bad for a Steelers fan, kly! Well done! Believe it or not, the only '85 Bears number retired is Payton's 34. There was talk a couple years ago to retire Dent's 95 when he went into the HOF but it was shot down. Simply put, the Mc Caskey's have announced they are running out of jersey numbers and Da Coach's 89 is the final one. BTW - Nagurski was 3, Luckman was 42 & Halas was 7. If you are interested in the rest...

Thanks, Mark. For a player with such a brief career, shortened by terrible injuries, Sayers has an incredible number of amazing highlight runs. If it hadn't been for knee injuries, he might have been regarded as the greatest running back of all-time.

Agreed! I saw a half hour special on our Chicago Comcast Sports Network and it profiled the life and career of Sayers. To your point, if it were not for injuries, he would have only added to his already incredible stats.

He is now involved with a big technology/consulting thing on the north shore I believe. He is also very involved with a ton of charities, non profits, etc. Bottom line, he is very successful and grateful to God for everything. Seems like a real class act.
