As wonderfully evil as Borgnine could be in movies I enjoyed him most in "Marty". He really captured the character with a big heart and portrayed it perfectly.

I think that was Borginine's true character (I like to think that, anyway). And you're right, he played a wonderful "heavy." But he could also be very endearing, like he was in "Marty."

In one of his last films, "Red," he played a record keeper in a government building. He only had a scene or two with Bruce Willis, but he played the kindly old grandpa type to a tee. So I like to think he was more like those characters than Fatso Judson in "From Here to Eternity." Fatso was a truly rotten character (and he was even worse in the book).

Apologies if this is well-known (especially on this board), but Marty got its start as a Paddy Chayefsky teleplay with Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand, later of the Sopranos. The movie with Borgnine and Betsy Blair came out a couple of years later.

Betsy Blair was Hollywood homely, which meant she could reach down to play as "pretty but plain" (even then, she had killer pretty eyes). Nancy Marchand, well, may have been more suited to the role:

For one thing, she was bigger than Steiger.

Tonight TCM is showing a number of Sophia Loren movies. In her prime, she was unmatched for beauty and acting ability. I especially liked her in The Pride and the Passion with Sinatra and Cary Grant.

I watched "The Key" earlier. It was the first time I saw it (starring Loren and William Holden). What a fucked up movie!! Very dark. Didn't like it at all.

"Key Largo" is on right now grin.

When Rocco talked everybody shut up and listened. What Rocco said went! Nobody was as big as Rocco. It'll be like that again, only more so! I'll be back up there one of these days and then you're gonna really see something!

What a movie that is best scene for me was when Brando told Saint about her brother. Then the boat noise drowned it out and you were left to their facial expression to tell the story. One of the most powerful movie scenes ever made.

Ann Margaret was unbelievably sexy in this move. Especial when they checked her out while they were under the car.

She is 74 now. I saw her last year in the Show Ray Donovan. She still looks good yum.

"The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) is on right now. Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Dana Andrews (my favorite actor of that era), Teresa Wright (most famous as Mrs. Lou Gehrig), Virginia Mayo. An absolute classic.

To my knowledge, it's the first film that dealt with coming home from war and adapting. It was light years ahead of its time. And there's nothing like good, old-fashioned, clearly defined gender roles. My God, the women couldn't wait to care for their husbands! tongue lol

All kidding aside, though. A GREAT movie! smile

Virgina Mayo and Steve cockron also in this moving were in many movies together including White Heat "top of the world Ma"

Great movie.

I love Dana Andrews as well. For you kids who aren't familiar with his work check out two old war movies- A Walk in th Sun, and The Purple Heart, both costarring Richard Conte, better known to the youngsters as Barzini in GF 1.

A favorite of both mine and Turbull's. We've discussed it here at length in the past and in PMs. For some reason, to me, that it was made while the war was still going on makes it that much better. Dana Andrews's rant at the end is an all-timer.

Its one of the best in the genre imo.

Quite a few of the war movies were filmed while the war was going on, and no one really knew how it would end. Seeing them and knowing that makes a them so poignant.

Like Sahara (1943), the last line when Bogart says "Yeah. They'd want to know. Halliday, Doyle, Tambul, Williams, Stegman, Frenchie, Clarkson. We stopped them at El Alamein." Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

You can't go wrong watching a Richard Conte movie. He did make more then his share of B movies, but even those movies were good. His best in my opinion was 13 rue madellane with James Cagney.

Low budget but cool movie was thieves highway.

For what ever reason A walk in the sun reminds me in some way of saving private Ryan.

A very young Lloyd bridges was in Sahara. Really good movie.

Another movie about vets coming home from WW 2 was "till the end of time"

Staring Guy Madison smaller part Robert Mitchum. This actually is a very good movie. The tittle was also a big song sung by Perry Como. Very hard to find but it was about vets looking out for one another.

My favorite movie in which Perry Como sang the title song was "Somebody Up There Likes Me." Aside from the fact that Paul Newman was one of my five favorite actors of all-time, the end of that flick (the "parade" for Rocky) always makes me smile.
