Big thing down here on the Jersey shore (and probably other shore towns)..Lifeguard competitions; swim, row a boat through the surf, paddle boards, etc. Women too. Tanned bodies, tight stomachs, big pects. Horn me up.

Here's a weird sports tradition from my neck of the woods.

There is a soccer rivalry between local colleges, Messiah and Elizabethtown. For several decades when they meet yearly, the fans of both schools throw marshmallows before, during and after the match at the players, coaches, officials and each other, as well as the film crew covering the game. The field is covered with thousands of marshmallows, making it look like a blizzard.

The tradition began when one team accused the other of being soft before a game, leading to the marshmallows being hurled at the accuser.

I'm sure there are. I'm not sure how they clean up. I've never gone, but the news reports show people from 3 to 83 throwing marshmallows.

I will make this brief for my US pals. Rugby, great violent game, I love it. Two types of rugby. Union which is more popular and League which is better. The rugby league World Cup is currently being played in the UK and the USA have a team which qualified for the first time in it's history. May I present the Tomahawks (is that a politically correct name) who have won their first 2 games and qualified for the quarter finals, where they will play the mighty Australians who are rather good. Nevertheless the Tomahawks have won the hearts and minds of the rugby world and you should all be very proud of them!!

Thanks for the tip Yogi. I'll have to check the TV listings. I would love to watch rugby rather than the TV Controlled Professional Sports. I particularly hate listening to the self-promoting, self-aggrandizing "reporters". As far as Tomahawks being accepted, yes, probably. Its just an object. Now if the logo had a Redskin Scalping a White Man with a Tomahawk; that might be a different story.

On a lighter personal note. Today was a nice, cool, clear Fall day in South Jersey, so I headed for the golf course to get in a quick 9 while "working" from home - 1 hr/20 min. While walking up the 2nd fairway, a bald eagle flew across the fairway and landed in the top of tall rotten tree on the edge of the woods. I took that as a sign that I might get an eagle (hole in one). Nope. The reason I was optimistic; once while playing in the mountains of Pennsylvania, an eagle glided over us on a par 4 dogleg. My playing partner hit his tee shot to the dogleg and his next shot went in the hole for an eagle. Very cool.

I'm kind of fond of the nickname "Tomahawks," especially for a rugby team.

I've tried to find tv coverage of this, but even the so-called Worldwide Leader in Sports, ESPN, doesn't know the Cup is being played. Maybe I missed it. I appreciate your updates on the tournament, Yogi.

Tomahawks play again tonight in their last group game against Scotland. Now I cannot root against Scotland even though I am an unofficial rooter for the 'Hawks. However USA are already through and Scotland need to win tonight so I am keeping everything crossed!!

I went out to Pittsburgh Saturday night to see the Notre Dame/Pitt game with several friends. The one Pitt fan with us was a fullback on the 1976 national championship team. We got to meet Tony Dorsett and some of his old teammates.

At halftime the team was honored briefly on the field, but one of my other friends (who never played a down of organized ball in his life) made it on the field with my fullback friend and the other members on the team who were present. He even signed a few autographs.

My younger son was also at the game with some friends from school. I met up with him after the game where he and his buddy were waiting in a small line to have their pictures taken with David Robinson, whose son is a freshman receiver for the Irish. I was amazed by how accommodating, patient and friendly Robinson was, considering it was after midnight and I'm sure he wanted to leave with his family.

My son and I spent the night in Pittsburgh and my other son met us the next day at noon to watch the Steelers and Bills. I had seen him earlier Saturday when he and his friends drove home from school for a memorial for their friend, who had died last week. It was a good afternoon to spend with the boys.

Yogi, caught a bit of Rugby the other night, US v. New Zealand. Lots of fun, but I had no idea WTF they were doing. I didn't hear the name "Tomahawks" though. Bad breath could be a useful weapon.

Hmmm, could be an old game MC, cos US have not played New Zealand in this World Cup. They have made it to the quarter finals and play the mighty Australians on Friday night(UK time). The other games are NZ v Scotland, England v France and Fiji v Samoa. I would put gamble my mortgage right now on it being an Aussie v NZ final.

In a rugby league world cup update, the USA Tomahawks bowed out with a bit of a thumping at the hands of Australia 62-0. New Zealand (who have some of the largest men I have ever seen in their ranks) beat Scotland 40-4. England play France now and Fiji play Samoa tomorrow in a Polynesian clash of more giant specimens.

Did any of you know that Ted William's mother was Mexican?

Williams addressed this in his autobiography. He spent time as a child with his grandmother, who didn't speak English. Because of prejudices against Latinos in his day he downplayed his ethnicity, or risk being blackballed from the game. As a result during his career he had to avoid many of his Mexican cousins and relatives.

By the way, Reggie Jackson is part Latino too.

About ten years ago Major League Baseball announced their all-time Latino team, which is an amazing collection of talent in aperiod of time. Williams was not included in this list, but Keith Hernandez was even though Williams is more Latino than Hernandez.

Does anybody else remember the NBA dunk contest when the participants actually made the dunks?

I don't usually watch this, but my son was home from college this weekend and we watched the pre-all0star game festivities. I think the TNT presentation with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Shaq and Reggie Lwis is very entertaining.

Barkley had one of the best lines I heard in a telecast when a dunking participant had Shaquille O'Neal sit regally in a throne in the lane and then leaped over him for the dunk. Barkley said, "That's exactly how Shaq played defense the last three years of his career."

I saw that video a few years ago. It's a hoax, made by an ad agency for a gatorade commercial that never made the air. Look at the leftfielder's nonchalant reaction to the ball, which the doctored video shows as close to the foul line. Also, as she's running to her chair the leftfielder catches a baseball from beyond the foul line.

It's a fun video though.

A similar hoax video of Evan Longoria snatching a batting practice line drive barehanded before it struck the head of a woman interviewing him was another ad that never made it as a commercial.

klydon loves to go around the neighborhood and tell kids that the Tooth Fairy isn't real. (I am, however, waiting for him to tell me it's OK to put my winter coat in storage).

This Saturday near the Steel Pier in Atlantic City the "Freeze for the Cure" surfing contest will be held. Water temp is about 38 degrees. Its an annual event to raise money to fight Hogkins Lymphoma Disease. Local professional surfer Dean Randazzo started the event. He is a Hogkins survivor.

They put the beatdown on Boston, smashed LA, contained Chicago and made Portland look silly. The NBA had to change the rules to stop them. They rarely got any credit, love or even respect but they didn't really care. They got championship rings. smile
