Since the initial run ended on HBO I've watched the entire series on DVD probably a dozen times - seriously, most nights there's nothing nearly as good on and I'll pop in a random disc and end up watching from that point until the end of the season if not the series. If it's on I'll probably end up watching it. I'm addicted.
Anyway, one thing I have never been able to figure out is where does Silvios' dislike of Christopher come from. Maybe I'm reading more into it or I missed something but Silvio really seems to have a problem with Chris. The episode "No Show" was on the other night. Chris gets appointed acting captain while Paulie is in the can and even when he makes the announcement ("that's the way some peoplewant it...") to his reaction to Chris' joke about putting wings in his hair. Silvio is not thrilled with the promotion. He further displays his anger at the situation by letting Patsy steal the tiles. I think it goes back to before Chris was made.
So why is Silvio at odds with Chris? Is it because he disagrees with Tony promoting such a young guy? Is there a specific incident that prompted this animosity? Does it go back to Dickie?
It's something I just never understood, what's your take?

I think that there was a general feeling that if Chris wasn't Tony's nephew, he would have gotten clipped early on for a number of reasons, drug abuse being the big one.He wasn't a big earner, wasn't particularly ambitious, and was more interested in getting away from the Mob. Not only does he not get whacked, but he actually rises to acting captain, and at one time,Tony's choice to be his future underboss.Other than Paulie, who looked at Chris like a son,I don't think anyone in the Family took Chris seriously or had any respect for him.

There is no beef. In fact, Chris and Silvio got along pretty well over the course of the show. Silvio was always amused at Chris's quips and looked out for him on several occasions.

Not to mention that Silvio got choked up when the crew got together in Tony's room to mourn over Chris's death. That was one of the few moments where he showed any kind of real emotion during the show's run.

That was the only time Silvio showed emotion other than anger. (The soccer ref, card games ect..) lol

I think that was the only time Silvio seemed displeased with Chris. they got along pretty well throughout teh series. i think in that episode when Chris is promoted he had only bene made for about a year. in the mafia its rare for a made guy to become a capo or actng capo shortly after he was made.

It's interesting how there are so many different opinions from watching the same series.

I always felt that Silvio and Chris were close-despite the events surrounding the stolen cable at the construction site. I think Silvio wanted Chris to see that a capo's job wasn't as easy nor glamorous as one may think.

I felt the most friction was with Paulie. Paulie and Chris lost trust over the night spent while lost in the woods, and Chris' storytelling made Paulie seem like a loser. Plus, Paulie would make Chris strip naked to check for wires, and sniffed Adriana's panties during a midnight inspection of Chris' apartment. Paulie disrespected Chris' father in law's business by having it robbed- followed by Little Paulie being tossed through a second story window, and Paulie doing donuts in Chris' front lawn. Chris would run to Tony to complain, while Paulie was old school and followed the chain of command...when Paulie warned Chris not to complain to Tony, Chris was reaching for a gun in his pant leg. In addition, Chris didn't want to pay for dinners and fought with Paulie over the tradition. Finally, Paulie disrespected Chris by announcing his daughter would be stripping at the Bing when she turned eighteen.

I agree with Lou in that nobody seemed to respect Chris. He wasn't a good earner, he was just a bloodthirsty gun at Tony's disposal and was being eyed for promotion way too early.

Christopher skated through the ranks in the organization by the grace of Tony's favoritism, and the crew acknowledges it with resentment. This was one of the main reasons why he had so much friction with Paulie. Paulie had been with the crew for years, and was a good earner, and to see a complete newbie bypass him so quickly because of family ties was infuriating.

Paulie and Chris's relationship with each other deteriorated because of things relating to the business. There's a scene where Chris didn't have enough money to kick up to Paulie when he first starts out and Paulie says "Don't bring our friendship into this".

It's only after Chris is dead that Paulie realizes he threw his friendship with him away for bullshit stuff, like money and pride.

I think Silvio thought that he didn't deserve the acting capo position and that it should have went to Patsy.

As Tony says if he hadn't been his nephew he would have had his intervention through the back of his head lol.

I remember being very happy when Tony helped Christopher exit the show. Always saw him as a huge liability for Tony.

How on earth do you know weather Christopher wasn't a big earner? I think you're reading into things way too much.

If anything you'd say he made good money, huge house, lexus, hummer. Need i say anymore?

One point that has not been brought up here is that Tony was grooming Christopher to advance quickly and become his #2. He planned on eventually only giving orders through Christopher. Silvio probably saw this - Tony's favoritism towards Christopher - and resented it. Silvio was supposed to be Tony's #2 and the most trusted...but Tony had different ideas. Tony eventually abandoned the idea of having Christopher as his #2.
