Cards give Jhonny Peralta 4-year deal

Don't know how good Peralta will be without the PEDs, but he got paid. Just like with Melky Cabrera two seasons ago. The incentive is still there to cheat because teams will hand out big money to them, even after they're busted.

Cards upgraded their weakest positions (SS, CF), have good, young pitching, and have the speedster Wong at second. Their future looks bright.

I'm not sad to see him go. I wonder how he'll do in Minnesota:

Some were surprised. They thought he would sign a one year deal to potentially make more money next offseason if he had a better 2014. As the article said, Ricky Nolasco just signed a 4 year deal worth $49 million while Hughes get 3 years for $24 million

I'm shocked. Yanks could have kept Granderson for much cheaper. And if power wasn't important with their CF, they should have kept Austin Jackson.

Ells is a slow fast player, who will continue to lose speed with each year. But if this means they won't bid against themselves with Cano, then I'll take it. I hope the article is correct saying the highest the Yanks will offer Cano is $175 mil.

As do I. I'm almost prepared to say let him go to Seattle. If he wants the money that badly and Seattle's not a playoff team so Cano won't hurt us and he doesn't go to Boston, let him go. I'd rather do what the Cardinals did with Albert Pujols - let him walk and spend the money elsewhere. Hey, they won a World Series without him.

Some fans are clamoring for Boston to move on Cano, but they have Pedroia- who runs hard to first. So any offer to Cano will include a move to 3rd base and paying way less than what the Yanks have offered. Seattle comes with limited off field opportunities, a losing tradition, 22k fans per game, and reduced power numbers. Toronto has its warts, also.

That's what free agency is all about. Yanks had to overpay for Ellsbury because Boras had them believing that 4 other teams were in pursuit and someone was going to pay that money. Meanwhile, Jay Z hasn't been able to convince Cashman that someone has offered $288 million to Cano. If the Yanks believe they have the best offer, why would they increase it....especially with the ARod arbitration saga reminding them about their previous negotiation mistakes?

I don't see Cano going to Boston. As you said they have Pedroia. Plus I'm sure they wouldn't want to add his salary to the payroll after just unloading Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett. I could see Cano going to Texas before Boston.

Speaking of A-Rod, I heard a rumor (and I think this would be genius) that the Yankees may just pay A-Rod outright. Meaning they pay him the remainder of his contract and he never plays for them again. Plus, paying him out wouldn't count against their luxury tax! The only thing to wait on is his arbitration hearing to see if he's going to play in 2014 or not.

Joe Buck isn't as bad as Tim McCarver. I could handle Buck but not anti-Yankee McCarver! Good riddance!

There are reports that Robinson Cano has signed a ten year contract with Seattle. The Mariners are expected to make a few more moves as well.

I'm shocked honestly but happy the Yankees stuck to their guns. The front end of that contract will be good but the end will be terrible (think A-Rod). I wish Robbie all the best and thanks for the memories!

Not too sad to see Granderson go either. I like him (got nothing against him) but I don't think he was the player they envisioned he'd be when they traded for him in 2009.

I honestly think the Yankees resented having to do business with an agent they view as completely inexperienced. Whether or not there's any merit to their position remains to be seen.

I hate Boras like poison, but if he was Cano's agent he'd be wearing a Yankees cap right now.

It just goes to show that Cano wanted nothing more than money. Which I don't have a problem with. But I don't want to hear after 3 or 4 seasons about how Seattle isn't winning or trying to compete. You went to Seattle for the money and nothing more. If you wanted a chance to win the World Series year in and year out, you'd have stayed in New York.

I really liked the Beltran signing.

Jay z is a very smart business man. Can't blame Canó for taking that money. Would've loved to see him stay but it happens. I think the Yankees should've given him a little more money to show some respect. You throw all that money to ellsbury who's missed more than 200 games the last 2 season but you only give about 10 million more to canó who's missed less than 15(I don't remember the actual #)and is way better than ellsbury. That's an insult. But Canó got his money so good for him.

I do too but not for 3 years. Feels a little too much like Ichiro last season with his 2 year deal (how much do you anticipate him playing this year)?

My thoughts on 2 things thus far this offseason for the Yankees:

1) The free agent class they signed in 2008 (CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Texiera) are stronger than this current crop (Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran)

2) The Yankees need PITCHING! They have added offense for sure and they've resigned Kuroda (YES!) but they're still missing 2 starters (1 will probably go to either David Phelps, Adam Warran, Vidal Nuno or Michael Pineda). So that still leaves 1 start and they need either a set-up man (if David Robertson's going to be the closer) or a closer. I do NOT want to see them trade for David Price. I'd like to see him in New York don't get me wrong but I don't want to part with the prospects it'll cost to get him. He'll be a free agent this time next year - be patient.

Absolutely, Irish. If they don't get some pitching, it's gonna be just as quiet on 161st Street next October as it was last October .
