The more I come to think about it, I have always seen Italy as the most beautiful and cultured country in the world and in many ways that opinion hasn't changed. However the more I grow up and read into various things I can now clearly see it has one of the darkest and sinister sides to it that other European countries in this modern age do not have. Why did these secret societies start? Why are normal Italians today so anti-state, I've always been lead to believe that all throughout the History of the peninsula since Roman times the state has always enriched itself and mistreated the people, causing them to be more individualistic and hostile to authority. Is that partially why many of these societies exist in Italy. It seems to me that Italians are very distrustful of each other and anyone in a position of authority and that is also why they are very family based. Does anyone know anything more on this matter?

I talk about Sicily now.State never cared about Sicily, generally south italy, they didn't care much about life of people, they solved all problems by their own,no police,no state.Family and honour was everything.Omerta was created long ago when Spanish conquered Sicily. You still have Vendettas in South Italy.People would turn to local mafia bosses(most powerful man in village)for help, for job,for doctor etc. Not the state, not the police.
Vito Cascioferro once said: "Don't throw people into bankruptcy with ridiculous demands for money. Offer them protection instead, help them to make their business prosperous, and not only will they be happy to pay but they'll kiss your hands out of gratitude."
And btw,you have some Yakuza groups in Japan dating even before Cosa Nostra.
