Anybody seen The Place Beyond the Pines? Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Ryan Gosling, and Bradley Cooper. Great movie. I highly encourage you all to check it out. The premise is as follows:

A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.

I have The Place Beyond the Pines in my current Bottom 3 of the year, alongside Zero Dark Thirty and A Good Day to Die Hard. I found it embarrassingly bad, though it's one of those that sparks an equal amount to heated defences. Worth a watch, then.

Really? I also thought Zero Dark Thirty was a great film. Cant say the same about A Good Day to Die Hard which I dont even plan on seeing at all cause it looks horrible to me.

The director for ROCKETMAN (the upcoming Elton John biopic) wants Tom Hardy.

Sounds interesting. I love Elton John's music and only know little about his personal life. smile

I must agree with Capo on AGDTDH, what a piece of shit. I know he's a fan of the original classic DIE HARD (greatest action movie ever?) and liked #4 (not sure about #2 and 3), and I'm sure he hated AGDTDH for many of the same reasons I did. Pure embrace of the chaos and disorder that is post-action filmmaking. What happened to that franchise's trademark pacing and humor? (Nevermind that this is yet another movie set in Russia involving Chernobyl. Other bad things happened in Russia since then, Hollywood.)

I'm sure he despised ZD30 because of the torture debate. I do know he despised Ben Affleck's ARGO because he argued it was propaganda to for the U.S. to bomb Iran. (Which is nonsense but if that was the case, it failed to do its job.)

Speaking of action films, I caught FAST & FURIOUS 6 last weekend. Since #3 (TOKYO DRIFT), that series has had the same director and those pictures have gotten faster, bigger, and more entertaining as they went along. This is a great cartoon action movie, and that's not meant as a backhanded compliment at all. Solid ensemble piece that utilizes its cast, good sense of humor, and dumber I'm certain than both IRON MAN 3 and the new STAR TREK picture combined.

Here's a link to my full length review, but overall I'll say that no matter how idiotic the movie becomes, I admire how in this era of rampant CGI spectacle, director Lin and his team try to pull off these action setpieces as much as possible with real stunt drivers and real cars and real wrecks. Even when the movie goes the most absurd, Lin thankfully has a tongue & cheek sense of humor giving you permission to laugh. Not to mention (for the most part at least) the car sequences are captured with clairty by non-shakey cameras.

Suck it Michael Bay.

My review for FAST & FURIOUS 6

Did anybody catch the Clint Eastwood directing documentary last night on TCM? Very disapointing.

Instead of a piece examining the merit and thematic values of his very lengthy (and mostly pretty solid) directing filmography, we get a blowjob on St. Clint and gee what a great guy he is by his peers. They did bring up that AMAZING STORIES episode which Eastwood directed, so that's good.

A good opportunity to examine his directing career, initially he directed mostly star vehicles for himself (because the studios wouldn't hire him for non-Clint pictures) and a parallel development of him taking production control of his own movies. Then he got to increasingly flex his ambitions and talents beyond shoot-em ups in the 80s and onward and is now a respected Oscar-winning director.

Hell use this to pimp some obscure gems of his that maybe people might not be aware of. Take WHITE HUNTER BLACK HEART, his thoughtful pseudo-John Huston biography which takes a critical look at the macho, righteous take charge persona that made Eastwood's acting career. Or his decent A PERFECT WORLD with Kevin Costner.

Missed opportunity.

Well, I’ve got it as confirmed as it can be: Sam Mendes is the definite director of Bond 24 and most likely Bond 25. He’s in, after exhaustive negotiations. Mendes obviously got what he wanted and will be a rich, rich man when his time with James Bond is over. The director of “American Beauty” did want to keep his theater career alive and will, even with the long planning for the Bond movies. But “Skyfall” was too much of a hit to let him go, and really no one else compared to him. Mendes and Daniel Craig will see “Bond” through to the end.

BTW, I'm also watching HBO's "Vice." A very informative semi-documentary from around the world. Bill Maher is one of the producers.

Great show, I have seen every episode. I wish it was an hour long.

Does anyone watch AMC's "The Killing?" I saw the first season and enjoyed it until the end, which was kind of confusing/disappointing. Anyway, I thought they cancelled the show but season 2 starts tonight. For some reason, I don't find either of the two main stars very likeable. confused In season one, I was kind of suspicious of the guy detective and thought he might be the murderer.

I'll probably start to watch tonight and see how it goes.

Right on TIS. The show just plays with you, you can always be sure that its slow built up to show a guilty party would be all down the drain in the last episode with a M. Night Shyamalan twist. mad At any case, I'd be following this season as well. ohwell

I usually get to watch everything a couple of days later, since I'd have to download them and watch them during weekdays. Anyway, I've just watched this, it was two episode premier and quite long. I too fall asleep halfway through, then I woke up and had to watch the last half of it again. lol It apparently is going to deal with the case she had prior to the time the series started, you know, that kid that was drawing the same thing over and over again, having spent six days with his mother's corpse. sick The husband was charged for her murder, but Sara isn't sure they got the right guy. He is on the death row now and quite a piece of work himself.

I was watching The Big Bang Theory the other day (I watch it pretty much incessantly; I think I've become co-dependent). Many scenes take place in the university cafeteria and in Leonard's apartment during dinner. I noticed that the actors seldom eat anything. If you recall in the Godfather, in the wedding reception scene where Michael and Kay are talking, Michael seems to masticate his Lasagna with his fork, but never eats any of it. I guess when you're shooting the 7th take of a scene, eating is not high on your list.

I liked the book a great deal, right up until the very end. I wasn't crazy about that, but I saw the book as a more of a sociological study.

Is it just me because I'm such a "Walking Dead" fan that Brad Pitt's "World War Z" movies looks like it might be good. confused Only thing I notice is that the zombies move way faster than on WD. wink

Btw, his co-star is the female lead on the AMC show "The Killing." I never would have recognized her.

Camarel,

Yes, I just learned it wasn't filmed in U.S. I believe the story is suppose to take place in Philadelphia no? I never would have guessed. Anyone I might check it out.

Yeah your right it was supposed to be Philadelphia. The city center was completely Americanized lol with a bunch of yellow taxis (cabs) yellow traffic lights and green street signs saying 1st avenue or whatever.

Wow, neat pics. It must be a big inconvenience for the towns people no? How long was everything in disarray? More importantly, did you actually see Brad Pitt? grin

I didn't see him but my sister and brother in law did who are extras in the movie lol, i was actually looking for a pic with them in it but i knew there was a slim chance of finding one since thousands of extras were used. My sister actually has a few though so if i get a hold of one i'll upload it.
