Glad I'm not a teacher. lol

No parenthesis means that 0 is only being multiplied by 1. So the only thing that turns up 0 is 1 and not the whole 6-1, since it's not in parenthesis.

Answer is 7. All the other answers don't add up.

I'm irritated that this is being discussed here. And even more about the many wrong answers. It's math for 11 years old kids.

Once the multiplication and division parts are done, you are left with 6-0+1. There is no need to put parentheses around the 0+1 because you can solve 6-0+1 in just that order.

Therefore, the answer is 7.

You better stay after school and get some extra help- lol--there are no ( ) in the orginal math question!

There are no parts to this...and a scientific calculator is only as good as the person who is hitting the buttons! lol

Why is there this assumption that because there are no parentheses to begin with, that parentheses can't be added. The parentheses are added into the problem to mark which part of the problem you are supposed to answer first (according to the Order of Operations...don't know if that is something you are familiar with...)

And I wouldn't be laughing, considering you can't even come up with the right answer. smile

There's not only some math problem here, but some reading problems as well. Since there are no "()", First you got to do "x" and "/", later you can do "+" and "-".

I try to color code it for those of you who don't come up with 7:
6-1x0+2/2

These red operations are frozen for now. You can't do them until you are done with "x" and "/" left to right.

6-0+1

So only now that there are "+" and "-" you can do them left to right, which adds up to 7.

I asked my college sophomore son this question. He looked at it for a couple of seconds and answered correctly, 7. I asked why, and he said, "Order of operations."

I then asked my high school freshman daughter and she gave me the same answer. When I assked why, she said, "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sara." This is a phrase to remember order of operations (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, and Addition/Subtraction.

The order of operations is not arbitrary or optional, and therefore 7 is the only correct solution to the problem.

Hope you don't do too much math at YOUR job!! lol

Like Klyd, I turned to the younger generation. My friend's son is a 4.0 Engineering student at Stevens Institute. He's home due to the flooding in Hoboken, so I asked him and my daughter (who yelled, "PEMDAS", but didn't have the mnemonic device Klyd's daugther did) and her boyfriend last night, and they all came up with 7.

I think a lot of older people get it wrong as I/m surprised by the number of adults, who can't divide fractions and perform basic algebraic equations.

But then again, they're the ones Romney is relying on to see that the math adds up in his murky budget outlines.
