Over a million (many Sicilians) went to Brazil i don't think so, in the 1880-1970 period the sicilians emigrated abroad were about 2.000.000, half of them in the states the majority of people in south america have north and central italian descent, that's one reason because probably the mafia doesn't develop as a domestic crime group so much but it's also true that the latin and african countries absorbed italians quickly compared to anglosaxon ones

According to wiki article, of the 1.2 million who emigrated there, only 44k are from Sicily. I thought it was a greater percentage. Overall, about half a million are from south Italy. Three presidents had Italian ancestry.
