JG, I know exactly what you mean. My husband and I literally planted hundreds of Iris bulbs. They bloomed the first year, and then never again. The damn squirrels carted off every last one of them. Also, we have a pear tree in the front yard. We'll have dozens of pears one day, and week or two later, before we get a chance to pick even one, they're gone. That can't be birds, because the pears are too big. The squirrels also raid our strawberry patch.

Personally, I never heard of it.

America's Test Kitchen ranked Jarred Pasta Sauses and came up with the results in the link.

I kinda like the Ranaldi (#2), but there are better jarred sauces than any on the list -- but they cost a pretty penny. That's why you might as well make your own: it's not that tough, and only takes about an hour. (Okay, "Gravy" takes longer -- but never heard of a good jarred or canned "gravy")

Very true, Mr. Malta. The jarred sauces that taste close to homemade are usually three times the price of Prego and Ragu. We always have some jarred sauce on hand, and I've been buying Cento recently. There is also a sauce called Gumbah's Gravy from Brooklyn that's pretty good.

Are you talking about Gumbah's? I agree it was a little sweet, which I don't mind. $8.99 is a lot for it though. I picked up a jar for $4.99 but it normally sells for $5.99. At that price my wife says that she's better off making her own, which is excellent. The problem is that she only has time to make sauce a few times a year. We freeze a good amount, but we usually have the jars to get us through the between times.

She prefers Prego, to which she adds some seasonings and tomato paste, etc.

My older boy's working tonight; my younger son will be out and my daughter and wife are visiting family overnight.

I'm celebrating by watching a ball game with a quart of ice cream and a box of Cheez-its.

Can I come over? My wife will be home, and some of the kids and grandkids may stop by.

Please do. I'll get a couple extra cartons of ice cream, and for a Pittsburgh native I'll find some Clark bars and Primanti Brothers sandwiches.

Fresh paczki would be your ticket to this celebration of gluttony.

When I stopped at the store after work, I tossed a few cartons of ice cream into the cart along with Cheez-its and homemade chocolate chip cookies. I then grabbed some carrots, broccoli and lettuce just to make the cart look a little legitimate.

I have a couple things to do, but I have three bottles of Guinness on ice by the pool, and after the game around ten, I'll spend an hour drinking them while listening to the White Album.

You're having yourself quite the night there, klyd! Good for you!

But strawberry? Any kind of ice cream to indulge with, and you pick one made from fruit? Really? uhwhat

Where's your chocolate-fudge-peanut butter-marshmallow-all-swirled-together kind of ice cream? Now that's indulging! wink

Edit: you do get a pass because of the rocking combo of cookies and beer. Also, throwing in the greens to add legitimacy to your order reminded me of when I worked at a drug store and young men used to ask for a comb, some lifesavers, condoms, a pack of gum and a chapstick....

I don't like berries. For years, my kids were convinced that I was allergic to strawberries. I don't like the seeds. Breyer's Cherry Vanilla is way up on my list, though.

Quote:
As soon as Kelly Macdonald, 36, the voice of the Scottish princess Merida in Pixar and Disney’s new animated feature “Brave,” finishes filming a season of the HBO television series “Boardwalk Empire” in New York, she returns to her home city, Glasgow. There, she loves to scout out new restaurants and visit old haunts.
“All the pleasurable beige foods,” she said, “I get them out of my system the first week I’m home.”
Below are edited excerpts from a conversation with Ms. Macdonald about eating in Scotland.
Q: Where should visitors to Glasgow go for traditional Scottish food?

A: I love Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery, one of the oldest restaurants in Glasgow, with dark-wood paneling and tartan upholstery. The menu has all kinds of locally sourced fish like sea trout, sea bream, seared scallops. They do an amazing sole meunière.

I go to Cafezique for Scottish breakfast: sausage, bacon, eggs, baked beans with black pudding, which is basically blood with sausage (it’s delicious, but you don’t want to think about it too much). At chip shops, I love to get potato fritters. You put them in a Scottish morning roll, then add ketchup and butter; we don’t have the highest rate of heart disease in Europe for no reason....

My daughter's friend looks amazingly like Merida. She even has the long, curly red hair. They were at a graduation party today and one of the little girls saw "Brave" yesterday. Her mother told the little girl that she knew how much she loved the movie, so she had the princess come to this party just to meet her. The kid totally wigged out!

I must admit that I am not a big fan of sauce from a jar but I think I found the best tasting stuff on the market. Mrs. Mark had a coupon for one of Mario Batali's jarred sauce and I was very skeptical... but this stuff is pretty good!

Within the last few months, I remember seeing a feature on a local news show where they did a taste-testing survey of around a half-dozen commercially available pasta sauces.

I recall that the Batali sauce, though a bit pricey, scored high marks (no pun intended!) overall.

Anyone else out there have opinions on this sauce?
