I remember my mom used to wait until I was in bed, then she would set up the ironing board and put on a western, which I guess there were plenty of on TV at night. I would be in bed and could here the shooting and horse noises and the Indian war cries.

My mom used to have so much ironing. My brothers were in Catholic high school, which meant a white dress shirt every day, and my dad was a pharmacist, so he had a white smock for work. We had no dryer We lived in an apartment, and most of the laundry used to get hung on the roof in good weather. In the summer, the young women and teens in the building would sunbather up there on "Tar Beach". Anyway, seemed my mom used to have that ironing board almost every night.

I learned about the game of baseball (and the Brooklyn Dodgers) while watching the games on tv and my mom was doing the ironing. I was six years old and knew the entire lineup for Brooklyn.

My earliest memories of watching the White Sox with my dad was in 1972 when they wore red hats and red pinstripe uniforms. This season the Sox are wearing replicas of those uniforms every home game on Sundays. smile

For anyone who still watches, True Blood's new season starts tonight. I can't say I'm as into it as I was at first, but likely will tune in. I probably should have watched the last couple episodes to refresh my memory. I actually like "Walking Dead" better the True Blood.

IS - the new season actually started last week. Tonight is the second episode of new season... watch the first OnDemand if you get that feature. Me & Mrs. Mark watch that pretty regularly. Agreed, not as good as it once was but it's still not bad.

You are welcome! They do a pretty good recap of the previous season before showing the first episode.

My mom, who loved and lived to argue, called up the broadcast channel and complained that her husband bought her a tv and she wanted to watch a movie but there was no movie on. The station actually broadcast a movie!! [TRUE STORY] It was a Charles Boyer movie, and my mom told me the name of it, but I've since forgotten the name.

Thus began OnDemand.

Do any of you tune into MeTV? It shows some of the oldies from the 50-70s like The Honeymooners, Burns and Allen, MTM, Bob Newhart, The Rifleman, Perry Mason, and Dick Van Dyke.

Oli,

We have Antenna TV which shows most of the shows old shows. Lately, I've watched Burns & Allen, and Alfred Hitchcock. Yesterday they aired (for Father's Day) Father Knows Best all day. I'm not sure if it's the same as MeTV or not.

TIS, more or less the same gimmick but different programming rights. Personally I prefer MeTV if because they carry STAR TREK and the Adam West BATMAN and others I liked, but also on late saturday nights have Svengoolie who plays the old black & white Universal monster movies (along with B-dreck.) It's certainly a throwback to the pre-cable era.

I believe Antenna TV has something too on saturday nights, but I've never watched it.

A preview for Paul Thomas Anderson's THE MASTER out later this fall. Looks incredible. Are Phoenix and Hoffman early Oscar favorites?

(What I wonder though after watching that, will PTA and his people still continue their public charade that Hoffman isn't more or less playing L. Ron Hubbard? Nobody will believe them, especially after seeing that clip.)

Interesting Bible news in Hollywood.

Steven Spielberg already had his Moses movie in GODS & KINGS that could happen, but now Ridley Scott is attached to direct his own rival Moses production in EXODUS.

Personally I want Spielberg's preferably to happen because (1) Ridley sorta pissed me off with PROMETHEUS, and (2) The Beard making a movie about the most badass Jew in history? Money.

Now the pleasant surprise that will piss off some people: the Mad Dutchman Paul Verhoeven has found funding for his Jesus movie. Thank you God!

(Though personally his last Jesus movie ROBOCOP was pretty darn good. That will be hard to top it.)

The Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that the FCC failed to give Fox and ABC prior notice about broadcasting indecent language. Although I haven't read the opinion, I think this is a good example of how the Court addresses specific constitutional issues that are limited in scope.

Charlize Theron has shaved her head in preparation for her part for the upcoming 4th MAD MAX movie.

~And no, "Mad Mel" aint involved this time around. He's replaced with Tom Hardy, a casting I really like.

Ryan Reynolds is the HIGHLANDER in remake

(Ryan playing a Scotsman? That's a good laugh.)

Quote:
After roughly a month of negotiations, Ryan Reynolds has officially been cast in the lead role for HIGHLANDER. Reynolds will play Conner MacLeod, a Highlander who discovers he is one of a dwindling group of immortals who wander the earth and kill each other in combat for the final “Prize” – mortality.

The remake is set to be helmed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who is also in negotiations to rewrite the script. Neal Moritz and Peter Davis will produce the film.

I just read that Tom and Katie are divorcing. There's a shocker whistle.

Can't say I'm surprised. Too bad for Suri though, as it is any child of a divorce. For some reason I imagine Tom as being very hard to live with.

You know what's weird?

Cruise divorced Mimi Rogers (who introduced him to Scientology) when she was 34. Nicole Kidman was 34 when he served her the papers. And Katie Holmes will be 34 in December.

Who does Tom think he is, Prince?

Those two are like Matthew McConaughey's character in DAZED & CONFUSED: The older they get, their women never age.

Anyway, Tony Ortega at his great Scientology blog for the Village Voice posted this today:

Quote:
Holmes was hand-picked for Cruise by a nervous David Miscavige, as Scientology's leader wanted to prevent what had happened during Cruise's previous marriage, when a Scientology-wary Nicole Kidman kept Cruise all but out of the religion during their ten-year relationship.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Katie was fully aware of how Nicole Kidman got screwed over in her divorce with Cruise, and has much less of a relationship with their two adopted children as a result. Katie doesn't seem like the type to let that happen (and her parents, we have always understood, were wary of Tom's kooky religion).

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/scientology/

Man this divorce is gonna be nasty. TMZ must be pleased like cheese.

I must admit that as possible perverse trainwreck public entertainment, the potential of Kidman and Holmes colluding against Maverick is enticing.

I read in another article that Holmes was a devout Catholic. I am not sure how devout she was but I can imagine the change of religion (?) would have been something to contend with. confused

I also read that they had a pre-nup so not sure how airtight that would be.

Interesting, TMZ is now claiming the divorce happened because Holmes doesn't her kid in that cult.

If that's the case: Good for her. I try to be respectful of other creeds and faiths in the best American democratic tradition, but they're just fucking lunatics.

Now who will the Church of Scientology recruit to qualm the revival of those Cruise-gay jokes?

I know we're having fun at this new TomGate PR fiasco, but then you read this allegation and then quit laughing.

I'm neither a Cruise fan nor a Cruise hater, tho I find something about him unlikeable and for some reason I do feel sorry for Katie. confused If what you say RR is true, it is sad. I hope it's not an abusive relationship.

Geez, remember the couch jumping on Oprah??? I guess love faded away.
