I'm rooting for him. I remember how exciting Affirmed's wins against Alydar were in 78. I hope I'll Have Another wins another.

That's a shame. Reading this ruined my afternoon because I'm a big racing fan and I was really looking forward to the race tomorrow ohwell.

My son's high school team made it to the elite eight in the the State AAAA play-offs, but lost 7-6 to a powerful LaSalle College High team that has five seniors going Division I next year. When I saw this team, which recruits actively for baseball, I didn't think we had a shot, but despite the loss it was our team's most impressive outing.

It was a roller coaster of emotions as we were ahead, but fell behind 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. We scored twice in the top of the sixth, but LaSalle plated three in the bottom of the 6th on a one out, bases loaded double.

My son entered the game to pitch at that time. An error by the ss made it first and third. My son struck out the next batter and the catcher picked off the runner on third for an inning ending double play.

We tied it in the top of the seventh. But the lead-off batter for LaSalle fouled off a lot of pitches and earned a walk. A sacrifice put him on second. Then our catcher, who's been superb all year, had a passed ball putting the winning run on third. We loaded the bases to set up a force and moved the centerfielder into the infield, which was in. The batter with two strikes hit a high fly to moderate left for a walk-off sac fly on a close play at the plate.

My son is still in the dumps, but he pitched well. He gets the start on the mound tonight as the Legion season begins today, having been delayed a few weeks due to the high school team's post season run.

Congrats to Rafael Nadal on winning his seventh French Open today. I'm happy for him because I'm not crazy about Djokovic.

klydon - Sounds like it was a really good game. I'm sorry your son's team was on the losing end of it.

It was the best high school baseball game I've ever seen. The LaSalle starter took a rocket line drive square off the ankle. He slammed his glove to the ground as he collapsed to the ground. Despite a noticeable limp he stayed in the game and pitched well.

We tied it late on a suicide squeeze and went ahead on a two out triple.

What is most memorable for me though is to see my boy and other kids, many of whom I've known since they were t-ball age, face a Goliath of a team and rise to a level of play they had'nt reached before.

Thanks, Yogi. He has a busy summer with Legion and Travel baseball along with a job with a landscaping company. He also will play again in the Keystone State Games, which is like a Pennsylvania version of the Olympics. The state is divided among 8 regions for baseball teams, and last year his Capitol Region team won the gold.

But I think he's getting over Friday's play-off loss. Two very pretty girls, who just graduated from high school came to the house to see if he wanted to go to the beach for a few days. A lot of his senior teammates are already there. He grabbed his stuff, the girls hopped into his car, and off they went. My wife was a little surprised I let him go, spur of the moment.

But a few days at the beach with three pretty girls. What was I going to say? No?

I'm looking forward to Father's Day. We are planning a trip to the Indians game - our first of the season. There is something magical about baseball between a dad and his kids. My youngest, our 6 yr old son, is playing coach pitch ball this year. I am an asst. coach and loving it. My little guy's enthusiasm is contagious.

He also began watching "Field of Dreams" about two weeks ago. That ending scene with Costner & his father playing catch was even better watching it alongside my boy.

Can't beat pretty girls at the beach Klyd. Hell at his age i would have took ugly girls in the sand pit tongue

Goombah, nice to see you and your son sharing magic father and son moments over sport cool

On Saturday my 2 eldest boys have their football Presentation days where they get their awards and medals etc. However because they are different ages and play for different teams the 2 events are being staged at different venues but at the same time panic My wife is at work so i will attend Andrews and poor Mike will have to go himself, but he understands i have been to plenty of his and not so many of Drew's!

Finally tomorrow, said 2 boys, being excellent members of the school sports faculty are being taken by the school to see the Olympic torch pass through our city. All expenses paid for by the school as well...which is unusual smile

Yogi, why don't you do one of those imposter stunts - make your own torch and jump into the path of the runners.

Congrats to all the kids in sports. Great father/son moments.

I remember you spending Father's Day a few years ago at the ballpark, goombah. I can't think of a better way to celebrate Father's Day.

I agree with you about the magic of that scene where costner's playing catch with his dad. There's something quasi-spiritual about a simple quiet game of catch, especially when shared between family members of different generations. There's a mesmerising rhythm to the give and take of it all.

I remember coming home from work after stressful days, and after playing catch with my boys in the yard or ball field, the tension from the day would vanish.

That is awesome about your kids with the torch, Yogi. It's not something many of us get to experience. Even with the rain.

Ryan Whiting, a kid from our town, made the Olympic team as a shotputter. He's dedicating the games to his mom, who died unexpectedly a few years ago from complications from knee surgery.

Forget Football, baseball, and all that.

After watching a week of Olympic Trials, I really do think that the best athletes are Olympians. The gymnasts, especially. NO ONE ELSE can do what they do.

I've been saying, that if you can be 300 lbs and still compete in a sport, you're not an athlete.

Football = any strong fat guy can help the team.
Baseball = lots of fat guys can hit, but can't run.

I think Basketball is the sole group-sport that necessitates real athletes on a team. And soccer, too.

You don't NEED to be athletic to be a star on your team. (Do I need to make baseball references?)

I think a true athlete can stand apart, him/herself -- without the need of a team (but of course, with them is okay). Those gymnasts just blew me away -- strength, power, endurance, discipline, endurance, agility, dexterity, etc, ...what running back or shortstop has ALL of that??

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

I mentioned our hometown shotputter, who's on his way to the Olympics. We have another local going as well. Hyleas Fountain, who won the silver medal in the women's heptathlon in Beijing, will be looking for gold in London.

Nice little piece in our sports news today. One of our American football teams, the London Warriors who are obviously amateur were having a team meeting when a guest coach turned up to talk to them. None other than ageing Baltimore behemoth Ray Lewis.

The TV clip of the team when he walked out were great. Apparently they sent him a letter talking about the work they do with inner city youth and gangs and he wanted to help and flew himself over. Nice touch!!
