With my previous thread i felt that i in many ways covered the rock scene of the 1960's with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in my mind being the definitive musical acts of the 60's.

So now moving into the 70's with their successors (and i use that term lightly.)

Led Zeppelin has influenced every single hard rock and heavy metal band that is around today, their sophisticated songs which heavily borrowed aspects of reggae, rnb, rock n roll and middle eastern music is still to this day as fresh as they were upon release.

Pink Floyd redefined what the idea of a concept album meant with their elaborate live shows and mature, and theme-heavy songs and albums they are still to this day held in high regard as one of the most futuristic and inspired musical acts.

If it wasn't for either of these bands today's music would be completely different.

Now here is my favorite song from each band

Tho I don't own a lot of music by either, both great groups. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon is classic. I guess my favorite PF would have to be Another Brick In The Wall along with Money. smile

Personally tho, I'd go with Led Zeppelin. I just love their style and Robert Plant's voice is incomparable. My favorites Black Dog, Kashmir, When The Levee Breaks and of course Stairway To Heaven. smile Oh, and Whole Lot of Love. I even loved Robert Plants solo ( as The Honeydrippers) of Sea of Love.

Led Zeppelin

You have to be in a certain mood to enjoy Pink Floyd.

Exactly. When I wanted to be in a, uh, "psychedelic mood," I'd crank up "Welcome to the Machine" or "Comfortably Numb," or "Have a Cigar." But that was after I listened to all my Moody Blues albums, which were far more musically accomplished and better produced.

Zep left a gigantic legacy of quality music. Too bad so many only heard or were influenced by "Whole Lotta Love," and wrote them off as a "heavy metal" band. They were a great English folk rock band, part of a long and honorable tradition. "King Arthur Rock" might be another label. "Ramble On," the pinnacle, IMO. "Rain Song," "Kashmir," "What Is and What Should Never Be," "Your Time is Gonna Come"...the list never ends.

I must disagree on that point Turnbull Moody Blues doesn't hold a candle to Pink Floyd. Moody Blues played it safe for the most part with a few exceptions. Don't get me wrong i love Moody Blues but Pink Floyd is where its at, they are far more influential.

Me too. There are quite a few bands in the 70s I would rate above Pink Floyd.

Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are both fine bands. Excellent in their own rights.

I know more about Zeppelin because I began following them in 1969, with LZ II, when I was just 14, and I didn't get turned on to PF until 1973 with DSOTM.

I have seen Zeppelin in concert, but I never saw PF in concert. I would have in 1977 for the Animals tour, for sure, but I was broke, after seeing Zeppelin 3 times that year !!!
Oh well..

I ran across a YouTube video which has (audio) studio outakes from Led Zeppelin's work on "Heartbreaker" from the LZ II sessions. It really takes you back to that special time and place in 1969. Of all the big bands in the world that have filmed their work in the studio, we have the least from Led Zeppelin. I don't know if their is any Zeppelin studio footage. But The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, and, Pink Floyd, all delivered there..

Both are brilliant and visionary in their own right. I personally prefer Zeppelin. I think that Page, Plant, & Bonham were the best of their time at their instruments and as a vocalist. They were an all-star band in many ways. As Turnbull pointed out, Zeppelin could play so many styles: blues, Celtic folk, head banging rock, and anything in between. Plus they were a powerful live band. They had much more room for spontaneity as a live act, which I prefer. But I can appreciate those who enjoy hearing a direct reproduction of the recorded song that Floyd often delivered.

Floyd put on live shows built on elaborate staging, lighting, etc. Their music was often a soundtrack to their massive stage production. Nothing wrong with that approach. As a music fan, I go to a performance to get swept up in the power of the songs, not the production of a stage show. Robert Plant's swagger and (sometimes) gravelly delivery were fantastic to see live.

The great thing about both Pink Floyd & Zeppelin was that they existed at a time when they had very little coverage on television. In fact, Zeppelin avoided television exposure like the plague. There was no YouTube, MTV, or other mediums for these bands. So if you wanted to experience seeing these bands, you had to go to a concert. Which made the mystique greater. Which, in turn, made even more people want to go see them.

it's quite clear that Led Zeppelin won this by a landslide much like The Beatles in my previous thread. Well looks like i'm going to post the inevitable thread tongue

The LED strip or neon tube would be placed under the dash and front seat angled to the back. You wouldn't even see the bulbs/tubes/wires, just the glow.

My first love out of these two groups was Pink Floyd. I personally prefer a lot of Zeppelin's later work off of Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti. Achilles Last Stand is a great song! I like Zeppelin II as well.

I used to love The Wall, but upon further listening I don't know if I like some of the songs as much as I used to. Same with Dark Side of the Moon. My two favorite Pink Floyd songs may still remain Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machine. However, I also believe that the 1971 release Echoes is underrated and even if it is essentially a Gilmour solo album the one they released in 1987 isn't bad either.

I guess I'm more into Led Zeppelin right now which is why I voted for them. I would contend that they are two entirely different bands with two different styles and bring something different to the table.

Led Zeppelin is my favorite band. I saw them many times in the 70's.

I also loved Pink Floyd, but I never got see them. In 1977, it was due to lack of money. As a college student, I was tapped out, after paying scalper prices to get in to see Led Zeppelin in the Spring, in Houston and in Ft. Worth.

Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd studio album. For Led Zeppelin, it's LZ II.
