Anyone else catch Chronicle yet? Great concept I thought. Sort of a superhero origin story crossed with a lot of teenage angst, a "how would it really go down" angle. I liked it. Mrs Meatballs, not so much.

Also caught Hunger Games. Alright, but I was expecting more action. Supposed to be part of a trilogy but, so I guess Ill be watching the others when they come.

Also, the newest American Pie. Ugh. More of the same, poop jokes and LOL DONGS!!1! rolleyes Better than the original I guess, but only marginally and only because it's that much more...self aware? Anyway, Mrs Meatballs loved it. Me, not so much.

With the summer blockbuster season upon us, lets look back 30 years ago with all the releases which came out between May 1 and the end of August 1982, in order:

Conan the Barbarian
Annie
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
The Road Warrior
Rocky III
Visiting Hours
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Poltergeist
Hanky Panky
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Grease 2
Firefox
Author! Author!
The Thing
Megaforce
Blade Runner
Forced Vengeance
The Secret of NIMH
Tron
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
Summer Lovers
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
The World According to Garp
An Officer & A Gentleman
Night Shift
Things Are Tough All Over
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Pink Floyd The Wall
Friday the 13th Part III-D
Beastmaster
Class of 1984

Well mixed in there we have alot of classics, some good movies, and lots of shit.

Out of that list, what was your favorite from that summer?

I think THE THING and BLADE RUNNER are the better movies, and CONAN is just as good, but my ballot is cast for STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN.

Just think: BLADE RUNNER and THE THING opened on the same weekend. (Neither was #1 that weekend, E.T. was #1.)

GREASE 2, c'mon now! whistle

(Man, even *I* hated that one, and I love GREASE!)

Pacino's Author! Author! kinda blew. Poltergeist was good, tho. Blade Runner is one of my faves, and Fast Times should get a nod. Annie isn't a great movie, but a guilty pleasure -- and of course The Wall needs a few joints on hand.

Besides Blade Runner, I think I'd have to go with Road Warrior or ET on that list....

That was one hell of a season for movies! I had gone to see "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" (I enjoyed it a lot) and got to see a "sneak preview" with it. That unknown free movie was "E.T."!!

Will CBS cancel one of the C.S.I. spin-offs, if not both?

Weird situation where C.S.I. Miami has higher ratings than NY, yet NY is cheaper to produce, which is why allegedly Miami might get the axe.

Anyone else watching the series finale of "In Plain Sight" tonight?? This has been one of my favorite series, and I'm sorry to see it end.

I think I only saw six of those at the theaters, and I thought they were all at least okay. I'd rank them:

Wrath of Kahn
Poltergeist
ET
Rocky III
Night Shift
Garp

Garp was based on John Irving's big book. The movie bore no resemblence to the book, but it still was pleasant. It's director, George Roy Hill, was one of the really underrated directors.

That was the summer after I graduated high cshool. The only three movies of those that I saw in the theatre were:

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Friday the 13th Part III.

After watching Dead Men..., I mentioned to my friend that there were two or three scenes taken from older movies whereupon I learned that most of the movie was a string of old clips.

For Ridgemont High I, of course, remember Phoebe Cates getting out of the swimming pool.

For Friday 13th I just remember going with my brothers and sister and wearing the 3D glasses.

From the Stupid newsdesk...

Pentagon refused to co-operate with THE AVENGERS production because it was "unrealistic."

Quote:
Moviegoers and comic fans know that S.H.I.E.L.D., led by Samuel L. Jacksonā€™s super-spy Nick Fury, is an international peacekeeping/global surveillance/crisis response/quasi-military organization. But its relationship with the United States is murky. And that basically stopped the U.S. military, which is normally eager to cooperate with the film industry on blockbuster movies, from teaming up with the Avengers.

ā€œWe couldnā€™t reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it,ā€ Phil Strub, the Defense Departmentā€™s Hollywood liaison, tells Danger Room. ā€œTo whom did S.H.I.E.L.D. answer? Did we work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? We hit that roadblock and decided we couldnā€™t do anythingā€ with the film.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/05/avengers-military/

But they helped the TRANSFORMERS movies, you know those totally realistic pictures about talking alien robots who transform into cars and toasters?

And having seen AVENGERS, everybody at S.H.I.E.L.D. and that team were Americans, including their boss. Even the "Russian" Black Widow was the very American Scarlett Johansson who doesn't even bother with a rubbish accent, so I'm assuming she's an American just with a Russian heritage.

OK Thor, an alien. That's one exception. But that's it.

Sorry to hear about "Alcatraz" and "Prime Suspect". They had compelling storylines, good acting and excellent writing.

Honestly, I was surprised to see a show like "Alcatraz" on Fox. It had to be a very expensive show to produce, but I thought they were committed to it. I'm really sorry to see it go.

Speaking of biopics, currently a movie detailing the production of PSYCHO is being shot with ScarJo as Vivian Leigh and Sir Anthony Hopkins as Mr. Hitchcock.

RR,

I assume you mean "Janet" Leigh. I have heard of this film and it does sound like it will be interesting.

Speaking of Hitchcock, Antenna tv has nightly showing of his tv show. I get a kick out of watching and recognizing certain actors. My parents use to think his antics before/after the show were silly. They were right, but I still like him. smile

I loved his wicked dry humor.* Like DeMille and later Tarantino, he was a natural born public pitch salesman for his own movies. For the show's syndication in foreign language markets, Hitchcock filmed bookend scenes in French and German, since he was fluent in both languages.

*=Classic was the trailer he made for PSYCHO. Talk about screwing with the audience.

I remember that clip but it's been years & years since I've seen it. I still remember my parents coming home after seeing that movie. They kept talking about how shocking/surprising the ending was. smile

Btw, wasn't this the movie that Hitchcock didn't want anyone to be admitted in theater in the middle? It was to be seen only from the beginning? Back in the olden days it was common to walk in the middle and then stay for the film to see what you missed. I doubt anyone does that anymore.

Oliver Stone has a new July movie coming out based on the book Savages which I reviewed here.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungleā€”as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

They are making a movie of the Broadway Musical of 80's rock groups, called "Rock Of Ages." The film stars of, all people, Tom Cruise as a rocker, Stacee Jaxx. I never saw the play but my daughter and SIL did while they were in NYC and loved it. smile

Anyway, they took a phone poll on the radio this morning and FWIW all the calls they got were positive on Cruise in the role. I'm not a huge Cruise fan but thought this role was an interesting choice for him. confused

They showed a few clips of it on "American Idol" (probably because Ryan Seacrest's girlfriend is in it) and it looked interesting. I haven't seen the play, but, as you said, those I know who have certainly liked it.

I wonder what the protocol is for a movie taking the title of one that already exists.

For example, there's My Blue Heaven from the early 50s I think and the one from the 90s with Steve Martin. It's not a remake. Then I noticed that there's a Woody Harrellson movie from 2008 entitled The Messenger, but there's also one from 1999 with Milla Jovonovich and there completely different plots. I've noticed several others over the years. Does anybody know?
