I never, ever, eat cake for breakfast. It's just about the worst dietary habit you can get into. But I just ate two Napoleon squares from one of the local bakeries. Now I feel bloated and unattractive lol.

I had a friend who swore he rated Mexican restaurants by how many fire extinguishers were on the wall in their bathrooms.

Chowing on some cajun fries from Five Guys. No burger because I have an In-N-Out down the street (which is superior in EVERY way). But Five Guys has better fries.

I read that some of these places sold food that was so blatantly unhealthy (high cholesterol, fat, etc.) that customers had to sign a form releasing the restaurant from any legal recourse for selling the food.

I haven't been doing much better at home lately. Using the Pillsbury bake at home loaves of Italian or French breads I've been making hero sandwiches....

*about a ¼ pound each of turkey, ham, roast beef and Swiss cheese
*shredded lettuce
*sliced onion
*sliced olives
*a little mustard and mayo
*oil and vinegar to taste

Bake the bread and then cut in half lengthwise. Build the sandwich. Eat the sandwich. Mmmmmmmmmmm. blush

I looked up The Heart Attack Grill, but I couldn't get their menu to download. Their site might be overwhelmed due to the news story.

Has anyone in the NY/NJ area been to this restaurant/market?

Full Article
Quote:

A Map of Your Taste Buds Shaped Like Italy
By PETE WELLS
IS it crazy to fall for a restaurant because of a handful of chickpeas? Tumbling around with pickled currants under crunchy stalks of grilled octopus leg, these chickpeas were smaller and sweeter than usual, less starchy and grainy. Tasting one was like encountering a goldfinch if the only birds you’d ever seen were pigeons.

Still, they were just chickpeas. Is it more logical to fall for a restaurant because of sliced bread in a basket? It was remarkable stuff, with the gradually unfolding nuances of taste that are achieved only through a slow and patient fermentation of dough with wild yeast.

But other restaurants serve great bread. So let’s blame it on the salumi board, with satiny pink and white folds of lonza and capocollo and lardo that melt on the tongue into a lasting impression of salt, pig fat and time. The meats, cured and aged in the basement of Il Buco Alimentari e Vineria, are among the finest salumi in the country.

In truth, there were a dozen little tastes that made me fall for this restaurant, which opened on Great Jones Street four months ago and has become New York’s most complete realization so far of a powerful myth: the simple and convivial spot that tastes just like Italy.

That myth is an old one. You go to a small town in Umbria and find your way to some modest trattoria, or maybe a market with a few tables. Then lunch arrives, and the top of your head comes off. Meanwhile everybody around you has their elbows on the table and is acting like food this good is no big thing. And you say, why not? Why couldn’t we have a place just like this back home?....
Il Buco Alimentari e Vineria
53 Great Jones Street (Bowery); (212) 837-2622; ilbucovineria.com.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

The Triple Bypass Burger is one of four options on a rather limited menu. The burgers go from a Single to a Quadruple Bypass, with the ingredients doubled every time.

A Single Bypass Burger will have one burger patty, five slices of bacon and two slices of cheese. The Quadruptle Bypass Burger, meanwhile, boasts four burger patties, eight slices of cheese and 20 strips of bacon.

Nor are these bacon slices drained of fat. The strips are deliberately "unadulterated," meaning they're not drained of any cooking grease or even blotted before they're layered on the burgers.

Beyond the Heart Attack Grill's burgers, there's not much more food to offer on the menu.

They actually had a special on The Heart Attack Grill on Nightline last night. Their waitresses dress as nurses and the owner/cook as a doctor. One of the waitresses was asked about the man that had the heart attack, and she said that she panicked and didn't know what to do because she is not "a real nurse". lol

They offer free food to anyone who weighs in at 350 pounds or more. Their spokesperson was a 6'8" 570 lb. man who died recently of pneumonia at the age of 29.

If they've found a way to get rich off of America's wave of obesity, I guess it doesn't make them any different than companies like Jenny Craig, just from the opposite end of the spectrum. Actually, the owner's prior business WAS a chain of Jenny Craigs.

My daughter gave me The Cake Boss's cookbook, and some of his recipes call for lard.

Those who know me know that I don't eat healthy, and I'm not one to preach about a healthy diet BUT this kind of restaurant bothers me. (It may just be my own disgust at my own diet shortcomings, though).

Totally agree, rolleyes with not feeling worth a toot have not been hungry and lost about 20 lbs. . Not a good diet plan, but I think alot of adapose tissue (fat) that we carry does make us feel worse. And I see these young kids walking around with their parents , going from one food joint to another , eating chips on the way and candy bars. And I would lay money on when they get home they set and play video games ! No wonder why diabetes, blood pressure problems, more mental problems are on the rise , behavior problems of all sorts ! It is disgusting , and we wonder about health care costs eek Thank you , I enjoyed that vent !

I love Gorgonzola cheese on my salad. It melts right into the oil and vinegar. The leftovers makes a great sandwich.

PB, did you ever eat at a steak place in Greenwich, CT that had an attached butcher shop? I can't remember their name, but they had a lovely salad, prepared just like that.

The Greenwich location has been gone for years. There used to be one in Hallandale, but now they're way up in Palm Bay, Florida. Same owners, same salad.

Went to the local farmers market this week, and saw something I'd never seen before: Fresh garlic! I mean, just pulled out of the ground, with stalks and all!

Bought a bunch for like $2.

OMG.

Not sure if I can ever go back!!

Seriously gonna start a crop in the garden -- I think they get planted in the Fall...

Garlic basically are bulbs. You always want to plant bulbs in the fall so that they "sleep" in the winter and bloom in the spring. I'm not sure how normal bulb-eaters like squirrels or deer feel about garlic, but any other bulbs I've planted over the years, like iris or tulips, don't make it to their second season. They're dug up and carried off.

Couple years ago, I used to feed the squirrels. Some would even come right up to me, and practically take peanuts out of my hand.

That was a couple years ago.

Those previously-cute fockers have dug up every pot I ever had, killing seedlings in the process -- forcing me to buy a cheap greenhouse just to keep them out. And they still dig into everything I need to leave out to flower (bees can't get in -- yet).

I don't want to hurt them, but at the same time, I really want to hurt them!

But they finally left me a gift this year! One of them buried a peanut in one of my pots, and to my surprise, it's sprouted, and it's getting big! Yes, it's now in the greenhouse.

I like WATCHING squirrels, but those fockers are biotches!
