Exactly. You can tell that whoever compiled the list tried to include at least one guy from just about every family around the country. It's really not based on anything. After all, in terms of personal wealth, where's Tommy Gambino on that list?

Mike Genovese also had no competition and controlled eastern Ohio, West Virginia and all of western Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh was strong at that time and dominated their region. Net worth was estimated to be $12-$15 million. Scarfo was not a boss for that long and his family was at war on the street for quite some time, somost of their operations were suspended. Plus Mike Genovese was dominating the drug trade in the region. I still don't think Mike Genovese was as strong as LaRocca or Gabriel Mannarino. Scarfo had to bend over and take it up the ass from some of the New York families and split gambling operations and other rackets with Decavalcantes in Jersey. Scarfo was a whack job, the Gotti of Philly. Stanfa would have had more discipline and was much more calculating and business minded.

I consider Mike Genovese one of the great Mafia success stories, in that he completely got away with it and almost never went to prison. So he's like Accardo and Gambino and likely had tons of assets no one even knows about.

Though you're right that Genovese couldn't have been as strong as LaRocca, since the generational attrition was really starting to kick in when Genovese took over.

I disagree about your assessment of Scarfo's business/managerial skills though - by all accounts he was an activist boss who made tons of money for himself and his men. But yes his violent nature was his undoing.

Ivan is correct. Scarfo was a very violent boss, but he and everyone in the family made a ton on money while he was boss thanks to continued expansion into construction/labor unions, drug trafficking, and the street tax.

Stanfa openly admitted he didn't know how run a bookmaking operation, he was literally NY's pawn.

I agree that Scarfo was intelligent, but his paranoia caused many bad decisions that led to the downfall of his organization, which really has never recovered it's full power base. Genovese and LaRocca did run a tight ship, very successful reigns for a mafia boss. Pittsburgh in general had 3 bosses over a 50-60 year time period with Amato, LaRocca and Genovese. Another powerful mob boss who had a small family but reigned with peace and prosperity was Jimmy Lanza from San Francisco who lived tone 102. I think the smaller mob families from smaller cities had it made because it allowed for more political corruption without any competition. Much easier to corrupt the key political figures.

Yo JCB, I kinda agree about Stanfa, I'm curious to see how his reign would have been if he hadn't had gone to war with the Merlino faction.

Oh, and Jimmy Lanza, did San Fran have a few crews on the street or what? That city never struck me as wiseguy oriented.

The thing is Genovese could be lethal when he wanted to be. But he didn't use violence indiscriminately. The only exception to this I can thing of was when Lenny Strollo lost it and started having people shot right and left in 1996, but I get the feeling he did that w/o Genovese's approval. But where Genovese really excelled was in insulating himself. Because of his insulation, he died a zillionaire living in a mansion instead of dying in jail like Scarfo will. The "rape" of Youngstown, the flooding of Pittsburgh and the area around it with narcotics... Genovese both profited from and totally got away with all of that.

I agree totally. Youngstown, although under the control of Pittsburgh, was out of control but Genovese "NEVER" met with the Youngstown guys. It was always Henry "Zebo" Zottola who met with Strollo and Bernie "The Jew" Altshuler. Genovese would only meet with Porter and Raucci according to Roger Greenbank, head of the Pittsburgh FBI's office. He had told me that with all the video surveillance at the car dealership that Genovese was employed at, that he would walk outside like John Gotti for a walk and talk, but ONLY with Porter and Raucci in the late 80's before the indictments of Porter & Raucci. Raucci died in prison and Porter cooperated but perjured himself on the stand during his trial which rendered him useless as a prosecution witness.
