Starting off with two news items straight from the Fossil Fuels newsdesk:

New Paul McCartney album out February

Quote:
Just in time for that eponymous holiday of love and chocolates, Macca’s new album My Valentine is set to be released on February 7th from Concord/Hear Music, as Direct Current points out.

The new record is said to feature romantic staples of ole in addition to originals. McCartney cites the music his family reared him on as influence. “This will sound like the years between 1920-1940,” he explained, “the time when my father was 20. These are songs I heard. My family, my uncles, everybody sang.”

In addition to covers, there will be tracks written by the man himself, following in the style of the rest of the album. Produced by Timmy Lipuma, the record features guest appearances by jazz pianist and singer, and Mrs. Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, as well as double bassist John Clayton.

It should be noted that Hear Music is Starbucks’ label, so expect My Valentine in coffee shops upon its release. (Source: Ultimate Classic Rock)

Beach Boys (w/ Brian Wilson) celebrate 50th anniversary with reunion tour (& new album)

Quote:
The founding members of the classic rock group — Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine — announced Friday they are getting back together to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They’re working on a new album and also plan a 50-date tour that will take them around the world.

Quote:
However, Jardine said the group planned to appear at the Feb. 12 Grammy telecast in Los Angeles.
“There will be a surprise at the Grammys,” he told Rolling Stone. “We will do something really exciting. There’s a lot of interest in it, which is nice. It’s going to be a very big operation.”(source: Washington Post)

If you're still Christmas shopping, here's a gift suggestion: THE SMILE SESSIONS, the master tapes of the legendary (unfinished) Beach Boys classic album SMILE finally officially released. Celebrated as a "lost" masterpiece for decades, it really did reveal itself to be a true gem from the late 1960s, which produced some of the greatest, most treasured pop music. Now you can add another gem to that list.

Didn't know about Sir Paul's album but just yesterday heard about the Beach Boys returning.

Wow, 50th anniversary really?? uhwhat Although I never had all their music I do enjoy the BBs. It wasn't til years after I moved to CA that I actually saw them in concert (90's). Beautiful summer evening in California, outdoor concert, people kicking beach balls from the stage into the audience. Perfect setting for a Beach Boys concert. What a talented group.

The McCartney album is an interesting idea. I've always thought the Lennon-McCartney team were partly old fashioned songwriters, especially their sentimental songs. The Beatles, of course, covered Meredith Willson's "Till There Was You," from the Music Man.

Speaking of the Beatles, I listen to music every morning when I go for my run. Today they played "Michelle". They asked to call if you knew the translation to the french portion sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble. Translation: These are word that go together well." I probably knew that once. tongue

Anyway, another great Beatle song.

Paul tackled a similar gimmick years back with RUN DEVIL RUN, covers of 1950s rockers (plus inspired originals) and I loved it. Particularly his version of Elvis' "All Shook Up," which I might actually prefer over the original.

From the Random as Hell Newsdesk:

Ke$ha covers Bob Dylan for Amnesty International charity album

Quote:
It's hard to associate Ke$ha with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's Chimes of Freedom compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24.

When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her all-star remix of "Sleazy," she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."

"I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and ... one of the most amazing lyricists as well — the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have." (Source: MTV News)

RR,

Although I am biased to the original I really really liked that version as well. smile It's an updated from 50's to 60's sound and it's very good.

Continuing with Beatles, perhaps not quite as popular Beatle songs, two that I really like are "My Bonnie" and "Ain't She Sweet." I remember as a kid I had a little blue songbook which had folk type songs and patriotic songs and those were in the book. I love "Rock" version of each. smile

Oh, and still with the Beatles and comparing original recordings to re-recordings, I LOVE The Beatles "Rock & Roll Music" and "Roll Over Beethoven" AND I think even better than the originals. With all due respect to Chuck Berry smile

The title track for Paul's My Valentine (w/ guitar by Eric Clapton*) has leaked on-line. Also revealed that Stevie Wonder will also appear on another original song, "Only Our Hearts."

I'm liking this.

*=Which if you music fans are keeping score, this might be the first time they've both collaborated on an original recording since the White Album. I might be wrong?

Thanks RR smile

The song didn't really do much for me, at least not the first time.

They were discussing this album on the radio this morning though. They said that the song Paul wrote for his new wife and sang at their wedding will be on this record. I wonder if this is the song? confused

From the Self-Indulgence News Desk...

R. Kelly has written 32 more chapters for ‘Trapped in the Closet’ saga

Quote:
The hip-hop singer told TMZ.com that he’s written 32 more chapters in his “Trapped in the Closet” saga, a “hip hopera” of a song that already consists of 22 installments.

He told the gossip site he plans to continue the saga, “but it costs a lot of money to do ... so we’re actually looking for investors.” (source: NY Daily News)

And from the Awesome NewsDesk...

Lost David Bowie footage to be broadcast on BBC 2

Quote:
A rare 1973 David Bowie performance on Top of the Pops has been found and will be broadcast on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops Christmas Special.

In the footage, Bowie plays “The Jean Genie,” which was found last week when a retired TV cameraman named John Henshall revealed he had a copy of the performance, which was thought to have been destroyed. The BBC once had a tendency of destroying classic television. (See: The genius Peter Cook and Dudley Moore show “Not Only… But Also.”) [Source: Death & Taxes.com]

from the I'm-surprised-they're-still-in-business newsdesk...

Rhapsody reaches 1 million subsribers

Quote:
Rhapsody, the longest-running subscription-music service, announced Thursday that it had finally crossed the 1 million subscriber threshold. Before you cue the cork-popping, bear in mind that Rhapsody launched almost exactly 10 years ago, so its growth isn't setting land-speed records. And three years ago, Rhapsody and rival Napster each reported having about 750,000 subscribers. The two companies are now combined, thanks to Rhapsody's purchase of the fast-declining Napster in October, but the total is far less than the sum of their erstwhile parts.

So the announcement doesn't exactly herald the dawn of a new era for subscription music services in general or Rhapsody in particular. The total number of people who pay for on-demand music services online is still dwarfed by the more than 21 million who subscribe to Sirius XM. And in a country of more than 110 million households, 1 million isn't mass market. (source: LA Times)

My nephew gave me a copy of "Hendrix in the West," a newer CD release of the first live vinyl put out following Jimi's death. "West" is arguably the best live Hendrix on a single CD, and includes cuts from his terrific San Diego and Berkeley concerts. You should also consider the DVD, "Jimi Plays Berkeley," which is the best extant video showcasing his amazing playing techniques.

I probably agree with both Scott and Simmons, which would be a first. But to be fair, aren't all Super Bowl Shows lip synced?

Quote:
War founder Howard Scott is upset that his band got snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — again — but he’s more upset that the Beastie Boys will be inducted before them. Scotty talked to TMZ about the slight, saying, “I’ll eat their platinum records!”

“We were cranking out gold records when they were still in diapers,” Scott says. That’s unlikely as the hip-hop trio were between three and five-years-old when War was founded in 1969, but his point is still valid. “How could the Beastie Boys get in before us when they sampled War’s music on their first album?”
Howard Scott speaks his mind

Quote:
Madonna is not the right choice for the Super Bowl halftime show, says KISS' Gene Simmons.
"I love all karaoke singers," Simmons snarked to TMZ.com, when asked how he feels about her selection. "I like all the girl singers who get up and sing with tapes. Shame on you... I don't think it's appropriate." He added, "Madonna is terrific... I hate the tapes."

This isn't a controversial pick like Madonna or whatever, these are the Beastie Boys: not just one of the greatest hip-hop acts, but also seminally involved in the Alternative Music epoch of the early 90s. "Sabotage" is one of the great classic 1990s rockers. Doesn't just make you sound pity, it makes you sound stupid.

Or put it another way, Stooges were inducted the same year as ABBA. Sex Pistols and Black Sabbath weren't inducted until just a few years ago. Deep Purple and KISS are still MIA. Paul McCartney (the most successful modern pop musician in sales) waited [i]seven years after he first became eligible. The Cars and Dead Kennedys aren't in (two notable 80s acts for their respective genres), but Madonna is.

There's a long bitch queue for the Rock HOF. Get in line WAR.

(Of course if sampling is obviously sole legitimacy for the HOF, the Beastie Boys also sampled Cheech & Chong. Let's induct them. And the marijuana Chia Pet too.)

Elvis Presley Museum Opens In Germany

Quote:
The biggest Elvis museum outside of the United States has opened to the public in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Located in Dusseldorf's historic Old Town, the museum will feature memorabilia from the King's career including 1,800 original pieces and documents.

A portion of the museum's collection is from 1958 to 1960, when Elvis served in the military in Germany. Those pieces include jewelry, furniture, clothing and his personal record collection.

One of the museum's founders, Oskar Hentschel, told The Local that one of his "favorite" items was a guitar Elvis bought in Germany and rebuilt:

"He bought an acoustic guitar and worked on it himself, turning it into a semi-acoustic - so it could be played with a small amplifier. We even managed to find his amplifier too, from a different collector, and they both work."

The promised "leaked" Christmas Lady GaGa track is here. From her people:

So to give you a little background to the creation of this song. I wrote it in Minnesota after the Monster Ball on the tour bus. We recorded it in one shot. Fernando on guitar, Paul on Drum Machine. I wrote, sang it, and freestyled the last minute + a half of the song.

I'll say this: I like the title.

I don't know if Lady Gaga can surprise me anymore. lol

Love the Elvis Museum in Germany. I'm guessing there may be relics from G.I. Blues since it was filmed in Germany. I still need to make it to Graceland though. tongue

To each his own but I can't see the Beastie Boys in before WAR. It's all politics on some level and there are plenty of bands that can gripe about things -Led Zeppelin never won a Grammy while they were together- but Scott isn't going to be concerned about any group other than his own-that's just human nature. To wait longer to get in than bands that came after you and *arguably* weren't as important is going to irk anyone.

I thought this was an interesting article. Some of the artists out today make a lot of money but they rarely seem to sell a lot of units or have mass touring success. This article delved into how and why that is.

Quote:
To sustain his success, Cee Lo has become one of the hardest-working stars in pop. In the days around the tree-lighting schedule he logged about 20,000 miles taping television shows, recording an album and making personal appearances across the United States and in Britain. One day last spring he managed a promotional trifecta, performing in New York in the morning, Alabama in the afternoon and Las Vegas at night.

“I’m still just a working-class artist, basically,” Cee Lo said of his schedule, as he waited backstage at Rockefeller Center for some hot tea to soothe his well-traveled vocal cords.

Cee Lo — a cannonball-shaped man devoted to the Liberace and Elton John school of showmanship — will earn about $20 million this year. Record sales represent the smallest slice of the revenue pie, according to Larry Mestel, the chief executive of Cee Lo’s management company, Primary Wave Music. The collapse in record sales over the last decade has decimated the bottom line, and a hit song alone is no longer enough to bring in superstar wealth.

So even musicians with multiplatinum success have started looking elsewhere for income, especially to increased touring and the kind of commercial deals that result in Miracle Whip product placement in Lady Gaga videos and Taylor Swift’s performing at a JetBlue airport terminal.

The industry is being forced to evolve before our eyes, but evolve how and what will it become for it to survive post-Internet?

Your guess is as good as any.
