Obviously the Mafia is very well known for their murderous exploits and classic hits, but it seems the number of "whackings" has massively declined since the 70s and 80s. Often we are talking about hits from 30-40 years ago as opposed to modern murders. So which family has been the most murderous in the last decade? Does anyone have any tentative stats on murder numbers carried out in the last decade or so and theories about the decline in murder? thanks guys.

Montreal has had the most mafia murders (20+ by or against italian OC) and violence in the past decade but you would be murderous too if you didnt have the fbi and rico laws to keep u in line. In new york i think it`s the bonannos or the genovese

theory is Murders spawn investigations or beef up ongoing ones. There is a general moratorium on murder in american lcn (not including canada) as the collatteral damage of executing a murder always outweighs the reason for the murder in this day in age. Its better to let the gambler renege on his vig and if he shows his face a threat or beating but nothing in LCN is worth the heat a murder can bring it can tear families apart look at the calabrese`s for example Frank sr. had enough money to live well its the murders that ruined him same with Vitale and Massino n Baciano the dissention in the ranks is a domino effect when facing life not worth it.

I am surprised by these figures. Thanks Ivy - excellent stuff.

My biggest surprise is the number of Genoveses that got whacked. I thought they would have had the fewest.

Also stunned there is only 1 Lucchese. I guess they were either killed by Vic and Gas or locked up.

Funny that the Gambinos all got wounded....no one can shoot straight anymore?

People talk how the mob doesn't kill people anymore. Not exactly true. Unless a guy is pretty well known, a lot of it is under the radar.

They still seem to be very serious about enforcing discipline. Al Bruno wasn't bringing in a lot of cash and was thought to be an informant. Larry Ricci was talking too much about the Genovese moving into South Jersey and wouldn't take a plea deal in the ILA waterfront case. He ended up in the trunk of a car. Rudy Izzi may have been skimming money. Louis Antonelli wouldn't kick up to the mob.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I wonder if anyone can answer me this: If we take the Gambino's as an example roughly how many people do you think they have ordered to be killed in the last decade? Also, if we were to compare that to the 70s how does it compare? Could they be killing 30-40 people in a year back then?!

In Philly, you'd have to add Rocco Maniscalco in 2010 for not kicking up as well. Based on a recent article, this appears to be the leading cause.

2004 Montreal Capo Vincent Melia is murdered at a sports bar in Montreal at the same time Frank Cortroni`s funeral is taking place.m Definately a symbolic hit from the calabrian faction as melia was a rizzuto loyalist.

The 80's into the first few years of the 90's seemed to be a particualry deadly era in mafia circles. There seemed to be a never ending supply of capible killers (Sammy the Bull, Greg Scarpa, DeMeo crew, Tommy Pitera, Charles Carneglia, Tony Mirra, Casso, Scarfo was having people killed left and right, Colomboes were killing each other wholesale, etc) then. It also helped the police and FBI didn't have the powers and suffocating presence they have today, it is hard to even get away with running a red light or speeding these days.
