I know Americans have no interest in cricket but England have just beaten the once mighty (but now crap) West Indies 2-0 and next face the awesome Australians. The match they have just played was in my neck of the woods and i fancied a day out watching some cricket but the price put me off. £75 a day eek

Shockingly over-priced. Do these people not know there is a recession on? mad

Yogi, I got the audiobook of Bryson's In a Sunburned Country, and I enjoyed listening to it in the car. I laughed so hard at his description of cricket that I almost drove off the road!

He says that it's the only sport where the teams where white and are as clean afterwards as before they started. He also says that it's the only sport that incorporates meal breaks.

PHIL MICKELSON SUSPENDS SEASON AFTER WIFE IS DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER

Phil Mickelson has suspended his season indefinitely after his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was announced Wednesday morning.

The couple married in 1996 and have three children, aged nine, seven and six.

Mickelson was due to play the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Dallas beginning Thursday and defend his Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth next week. There was no word on whether Mickelson will miss next month's U.S. Open at Bethpage but at this point, his participation would have to be considered a long shot.

Several players competing in the Byron Nelson Championship got text messages from Mickelson Tuesday night.

"I got one at about 10 o'clock, and I had a hard time sleeping, just thinking about that," said Scott Verplank. "My wife was already asleep next to me there, so when I woke up this morning she woke up for a minute, so I told her. So I think she's probably worried about it now.

"Every time I've been around her she's always got a smile on her face," Verplank said. "She's always upbeat, much like Phil. We've been over to their house to have dinner and spent some dinners on the road at these (Ryder and Presidents) Cup things. She's a neat girl."

This isn't the first time breast cancer has hit the pro golf circuit hard. Darren Clarke's wife, Heather, died after a four-year battle six weeks before the 2006 Ryder Cup. Clarke went on to be one of Europe's heroes that week and cried afterwards for 15 minutes. European captain Ian Woosnam dedicated the victory to Heather at the presentation.

Earlier that year, Padraig Harrington donated his winnings at the PGA to breast cancer research in Clarke's behalf.

During the week, Clarke noted how the American team and their wives had been especially supportive.

On Monday, former LPGA star Val Skinner held her 10th annual LIFE Event at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J., where 28 LPGA pros helped raise another $500,000 in a Pro Am. Skinner lost her close friend and fellow LPGA player Heather Farr to breast cancer in 1993.

Mine too. I was very saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of the wife of Diamondback pitcher Scott Schoenweis. How horrible for her 14 year old daughter to find her.

CANYON, Texas (AP) - Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a Randall County grand jury on drug and burglary charges.

What a bust Ryan Leaf was no Peyton Manning. But is he the NFL's biggest draft bust? Check our Top 10 draft busts of the last 20 years.
The indictment handed up Wednesday in Canyon charged the 33-year-old former San Diego Chargers quarterback and former West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach with one count of burglary to a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance.

The indictment said Leaf presented an incomplete medical history to several physicians between January 2008 and September 2008 to get or try to obtain the painkiller Hydrocodone.

It was not clear whether Leaf had an attorney.

Canyon police Lt. Dale Davis said Leaf is suspected of breaking into a Canyon apartment on Oct. 30 and stealing Hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.

Why oh why? Someone with all the money and talent that many of us dream about and he goes and figures out how to blow it all. What a waste of life.

I just found out today that a boy from my neighborhood has the longest javelin throw of the year for any high school athlete. He's been invited to train for the 2012 Olympics, but will concentrate on football in college. He's a quarterback

Hey Kly, were you aware of Bill Schmidt who won a silver medal at the '72 Olympics in javelin? I went to school with him and he's from Cannonsburg.

Byt he way, how about those Pens!

I've heard of him and seem to remember him competing in field events with Al Oerter. I didn't know he was a Pennsylvanian.

And the Pens! Bring on Detroit! It's almost been 4 months since Pittsburgh won a title. The Penguins are due.

Another Cleveland sports team circling the drain. I have reached my breaking point with sports in this town and there is no turning back. I can't root for other teams because I view that as being a front-runner. I lost the last of my fervor for Cleveland sports yesterday after Game 4.

The Indians put a stake through my heart in the 1997 World Series and the final nail in the coffin in the 2007 ALCS. The Browns have been in the Top 5 worst professional sports organizations since returning to the NFL 11 years ago. The Cavs will probably win one more game this series and then lose this town's best opportunity for a ring in the 38 years I have been on this earth.

Anyone seen Spike Lee's movie "Kobe Doin' Work" ?

Is it any good?

Maybe Mrs. goombah better hide your belts and shoelaces. smile Just remember: it's only a game, and the true joy of following sports lies in the journey and not the destination. I know you're a very loyal guy, and I appreciate your determination to remain a Cleveland fan.

But, for God's sake, it's not too late for your son. Get him a Terrible Towel and a Santonio Holmes/ Ben Roethlisberger/James Harrison/Jack Lambert (all Ohio boys) jersey, so he can taste true happiness. wink grin

If the Penguins win their series against Detroit, all of my favorite teams from the NBA, MLB, NFL and NHL will have won championships in a 12 month period. That's more luck than I deserve.

I watched it and was disappointed. It was Kobe wearing a microphone during a game with Kobe doing a subsequent voice over to comment on the comments he was making during the game.

I didn't gain any real insight about how Kobe prepares for and plays the game. I don't know if he talked more during this game because he was wearing a mic, but it appeared to me as the game progressed, his teammates were tuning him out. One thing's for sure though: he plays on a level all by himself and LeBron.

While I didn't get much out of it, I wouldn't advise you to skip the show. You likely have deeper understanding of the game, and can probably appreciate it more than I.

Klydon, I would not let my son use a Terrible Towel to wipe his rear with, let alone wave in public! lol

I was traveling with a friend this past weekend, who is a Penguins diehard. He believes they will not be able to handle Detroit in the Stanley Cup Finals. I know practically zero about hockey. His assessment was that Detroit is too complete of a team. But as we know, anything can happen in a 7 game series.

My point in the earlier post was not to talk me off the ledge. Sports is supposed to be an escape and entertainment - it's not supposed to tie my stomach up in knots. I don't feel this bad when I go to a concert and not hear a song I wanted to hear. I don't rue the movie industry if I pay to see a lousy film. I hate that sports has the control over me! blush

I am watching the World Rugby Sevens Tournament currently playing in Edinburgh,Scotland. The United States are involved and seem to have a few fans there in the crowd. One of them appears to be Abraham Lincoln eek He is sitting with some cowboys and some native Americans.....

I always thought Lincoln was a serious, sober individual?

This one is drinking beer and dancing!!!!

What time was the Pens-Red Wings game on last night? I looked for it on all the networks and ESPN. Is it possible that it was not broadcast? If so, how does a network justify not broadcasting a finals game in a professional league when they buy the rights to televise? eek

Big win for the Penguins. They're going to have to steal a game in Detroit to win it. Detroit is an incredible team, but I'm not counting Pittsburgh out of it.
