They're obviously very unhappy with Campbell, but unless they trade down, they won't get Stafford or Sanchez. There's another qb from Kansas in the draft that may go in the first round, but I doubt the Skins will go with him.

Last night I went to a college baseball game with a friend, whose son is the rightfielder for one of the teams. I saw an occurrence that I had never seen before in a baseball game.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth and a runner on first, a batter for our team came to the plate. The pitch sequence was: called strike, ball, foul, swinging strike. Strikeout for out #2? The scoreboard operator thought so and registered two out and cleared the scoreboard count. But the umpire never declared him out and the batter stayed in the box. The opposing dugout never said a word and the batter got a fresh count whereupon he struck out...again. The batter had a sheepish grin as he walked to the dugout and muttered, "That's embarrassing."

Anyway the opposing team came off the field, thinking there were three outs. I knew that even though the batter struck out twice, it could not count for two outs because he was only declared out once. You can't be declared out twice in one at bat. Also, because the opposing team never petitioned the umpire to have the batter out after the first third strike (or any subsequent strike in the at bat), they waived their right to have him declared out prior to the sixth strike.

After a discussion the opposing team had to take the field again to face another batter.

Wow, Klydon, I have never heard of something like that occuring in a baseball game. That is very weird. How humiliating for the batter to strike out twice in the same at bat!

I think Sanchez will be a bust.

Lions need to take Monroe or Smith, or even Curry more than they need Stafford right now.

I'll be watching the NFL draft as always.

I think the Colts will take Laurenitus the Linebacker from Ohio State.

I'd be surprised if they took a DT in the first round.

But you never really know who they will take.

Matt Ryan now has an aging, but still talented target. The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City in exchange for Tony Gonzalez.

It's going to be strange seeing Tony Gonzalez in another uniform.

It is so ridiculous that the NFL is delaying the start of the draft until 4:00 EST. Greedy bastards just want higher rates for TV advertising dollars. Because the NFL is so financially strapped already...

CS, I heard my Astros announcers talking about how there's supposed to be a movie made, based on the Moneyball book you recommended to me! I wonder how that'll turn out...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210166/

Brad Pitt??

I still haven't gotten to the book, unfortunately, but I'll have free time this summer.

I've never read Moneyball, but I heard local talk show hosts talking about how, for the most part, none of the players mentioned in that book have really amounted to anything. And with the A's decline, people around here are starting to question Billy Beane's "genius".

The book to me is a bit inward-looking so I have no idea how compelling of a movie it will make, but I'm looking forward to it.

You still haven't read it, Gina??!! Get to it! lol

During the time of the book, the A's were winning regular season titles on a very limited budget. I guess his genius comes and goes. wink

I think Moneyball tactics only get you so far. That's why the A's have never been able to take the next step. Moneyball strategies combined with the ability to spend money (ala the Boston Red Sox) will increase the probability of success greatly.

I think the success of the Red Sox is not so much in knowing what talent to bring in, but in knowing when to cut loose popular big name big $ guys, like Garciaparra, Pedro, and yes, Manny.

What I agree most with Moneyball is that batting average is the most overrated and useless statistic in baseball...next to earned run averages for individual relief pitchers.

Doesn't Moneyball talk about how on-base percentage is the most important stat for a hitter?

Yes. I think the most telling offensive stat is OPS.

What a great day for sports! Kentucky Derby, Celtics/Bulls game 7, Pacquiao vs. Hatton...

Anyone else watching the Kentucky Derby? I'm rooting for the local horse Chocolate Candy. It has a chance, plus a great name smile. Dunkirk is a beautiful horse.

I'm probably the only one here interested in the Kentucky Derby today, but what a great race! If you get a chance to see the highlights it's pretty amazing. Mine That Bird, the winning horse was a 50-to-1 longshot, the second biggest upset in Derby history!

I had to rewind about ten times to figure out where the horse was in the final turn because it seemed like he came out of nowhere. I finally figured out he was way in the back! It wasn't a Secretariat type race, but still very impressive for a horse not expected to win!

Here is a site with a video of the race and the story.

I watched and enjoyed the race too. I didn't realize he came from last place. Our newspaper had the list of horses with a comment after each. His comment was that he would likely be the caboose.

I remember another horse in the early 70s winning the Derby from last place, Dust Commander.

I thought the reaction ofthe winning jockey immediately after the race was one of the best candidinterviews of an athlete, captured in the moment of glory, that I have ever seen. He didn't fight back the emotion.

Congrats to my hometown player, LeBron James, on winning the 2008-09 NBA Most Valuable Player award. Well deserved. It's a nice individual honor, but I know that winning the Gold Medal prior to the season and the NBA title at the end are the true goals LeBron wants to attain.

Congratulations to James and his fans!

On a side note, does any team have more alternate jersey's than the Cavs? I seriously don't know what their team colors are. I thought I saw highlights one night where they had jerseys that made them look like the Lakers.

I agree, the Cavs have many jerseys. Then again, it should come as no surprise. You have, arguably, the game's best player. The more versions of jerseys the NBA can sell, the better.

Their "official" colors are wine and gold. Their regular jerseys are the home white, wine or dark blue for the road. They wore their retro, mid-1980s jerseys a few times this year. These were worn by the teams that used to come up just short against either Chicago or Detroit in the late 80s and early 90s. Their stars were Mark Price, Larry Nance, Ron Harper, and Brad Daugherty.

Back to basketball, how about Houston beating L.A. and taking home court advantage away from the Lakers last night.

Well done to LeBron James. He was the star of my fantasy team and no mistake. Thank goodness for the auto-draft wink

I thought either James or Kobe deserved the award, but I leaned to James because his team would be nowhere without him and with him, they had the best NBA record. This might be their year.

The Lakers losing Game 1 surprised me a little, but I think they'll handle the Rockets. I wasn't shocked by Orlando winning in Boston. Without Garnett to defend Howard Orlando is a tough match up for the Celtics, who almost pulled it out after trailing by 28.
