I just read on the BBC news that Chicago have put in for the 2016 Olympics. They are up against Madrid,Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro.

Will they get it anyone think?

The winners need to do a lot of ass kissing, favour dealing and general hand shaking to succeed smile

Securing the olympics was Gov. Blagjoyovich's Number 2 priority. He might be out of prison in time to light the flame.

Actually, I think Chicago will be a fine olympic venue.

You've had more luck in 7 months than I have had in 37 years! The only title I have legitimately celebrated in my lifetime was the 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes football BCS championship.

I'd love to say that the Cavs have a good chance this year, but I've walked down that road too many times before. As a Cleveland sports fan, when I start getting suckered into believing in my teams, it inevitably ends up like Charlie Brown going to kick the football thinking that Lucy will somehow not pull it away (again) at the last second. And then she does...

Very well put Goombah! I know exactly how you feel! I wouldn't mind going my whole life without the Raiders or Warriors winning a championship if it meant the Giants could win their first since moving to San Francisco. I will die happy if, major if, that ever happens.

Blibble:

Are you old enough to remember/appreciate the 1980 or 1983 Super Bowl wins by the Raiders? Granted one was from Oakland, the other when they were from LA? I remember Kenny King getting a screen pass in the 1980 game from Jim Plunkett and going 80 yards for the TD. The two images from the 1983 were the famous Marcus Allen cutback run for a TD and the Jack Squirek INT for a TD off of Joe Theismann.

Actually, I think the state can't make a case against Phelps. When it comes to controlled substances, the state laws criminalize possession, attempted possession, possession with intent to deliver and the most serious, delivery. They do not criminalize use. The photo and admission fall short of the state's burden of evidence. There is nothing to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Phelps was smoking marijuana. Without the corpus, namely a substance that is chemically tested by a lab as positive for marijuana, there is no basis for a crime.

I was too young. 4 and 7 years old. What little I knew about football at that age was pretty much limited to Joe Montana. It was hard not to be a 49ers fan during that time, but I never really embraced them like all my friends and family did. I always loved the silver and black of the Raiders, and became a dedicated fan when they moved back to Oakland. I was too young to feel the heartbreak of them moving to Los Angeles so it didn't bother me when they came back like it did a lot of older fans.

My teams have come close but can't win that final game/series. Klydon's string of good luck is the opposite of me in 2002-2003 where the Giants came within 3 outs of winning a championship and blew it, and then the Raiders lost to former coach Gruden and the Bucs in the Super Bowl. crazy

From the Department of Hard to Believe -

There was a news story about two guys from India who had entered a competition on a reality-based tv show over there. The entrants were judged on how well they could pitch a baseball. The top two winners had never played baseball before... NEVER! (The first place winner had a 90 mph fastball). Somehow they were able to get a tryout with The Pittsburgh Pirates and both of them, even without ANY knowledge of the game, were picked to continue on with the team (not that they'll make the majors, but they're gonna train with the minor league affiliation).

Evidently they're both very quick learners and have "a good work ethic" (as quoted by the manager). Wouldn't it be something if they make the major leagues?

I'd root for them. It sounds like a good basis for a movie, The Hindu Hurler .

Scott Boras Able To Get Manny Ramirez $20 Billion In Economic Stimulus Money
Quote:
WASHINGTON—After a series of closed-door talks, Scott Boras, the agent known for representing the highest-paid players in baseball, set another record for the game's largest contract when he finalized Manny Ramirez's $20 billion agreement with the United States federal government on Thursday. "Manny's .396 batting average last season with the Dodgers, as well as his playoff performance, proved that he is as important to this country as infrastructure projects, health care, and renewable energy development," Boras said during an interview, adding that Ramirez is especially satisfied with the indefinite length of the contract. "He's promised to cut 47 hours of antics this year and to make necessary attitude adjustments in order to remain solvent. Any criticism Manny receives for this contract is simply what comes with getting a huge amount of money from the government during a time of crisis." A clause in the contract states Ramirez could receive an additional $6 billion if he successfully saves the American auto industry.

I didn't hear any details but I heard that Manny Ramirez declined the Dodgers' one year offer of $25 million.

Supposedly the Dodgers have the two year offer for 45 mil back on the table.

It's even better than that. It's 25 million for 2009 with a player option for 20 million in 2010. With no other apparent bidders on the horizon I think Manny should take it. Nobody's foolish enough, except maybe Hank Steinbrenner, to guarantee him 3 years at those kinds of numbers, especially after he wound up dogging it in Boston.

He's an uncommon talent, but there wasn't one Red Sox player or coach, who wanted him to stay with the team. He certainly helped the Dodgers a lot, but let's not forget that since his trade, the Red Sox had the best reecord in the AL and that was no coincidence.

There is a lot of talk that the Giants are the only other team interested in Manny, but they haven't made an offer and it doesn't look like they will, unless they are being secretive and waiting until the last minute.

I don't mind if the Dodgers resign him because it's always fun booing a big name on the enemy team, even though the player makes them better. It helps the rivalry.

How would you feel if the Giants signed him?

I think it automatically makes the Giants the favorite to win the division, but that can probably be said for any NL West team who signs him, since every team is so bad.

Personally, I'm hoping the Giants sign him, but I won't be upset if they don't. I understand there is unwanted baggage, so if he becomes a Giant, the baggage is worth the bat. If not, then no problems to deal with. I think most Giants fans would agree, after years and years of Bonds.

The NFL free agent signings are underway, and it's comical to see the same old teams (Redskins and Jets) make the big name signings that seem never to get them anywhere. All of these signings remind me of kids getting new toys and then get tired of them after a few months.

Haynesworth to the Redskins ($41 million guaranteed)
Bart Scott to the Jets
Brian Dawkins to the Broncos
Mike Vrabel ends up in KC
Fred Taylor to the Patriots (this was a good pick up, I thought).

Also, Kellen Winslow got shipped out to Tampa Bay for some draft picks. I thought this guy had some talent, but lacked the heart, consistency and drive to win. He also seemed to anger the team. I'd like to know what goombah thinks about getting rid of him.

He'll land somewhere, but his days as a starter are likely over. I'm hoping that Byron Leftwich gets a chance to be a starter again. He performed very well as a backup in limited action with the Steelers, who will have Charlie Batch healthy next year to back up Ben. Of course, performing as a starter is a much more difficult task as defenses prepare for you, and you have to be consistent week after week. The Vikings, Lions, 49ers, Jets and Chiefs are possibilities.

I think the 49ers need to stick with Shaun Hill for an entire year. No matter how good he does, people want to dimiss Hill and look ahead to someone else, even though he has done everything he's been asked to do. He's not flashy or impressive, but he wins games. Especially late in games when it matters most.

Seems most 49ers fans like Hill and want him to continue as their QB.

I am really disappointed that the Eagles did not resign Brian Dawkins. Even though I knew he was a free agent, I never even considered the possibilty of him playing for another team. He was Philadelphia's longest tenured athlete (drafted in 1996) and was without a doubt one of the most popular Eagle players ever. This only gives the fans another reason to be frusturated with Andy Reid and the rest of the Eagles front office.

Freddie, this was the move that surprised me the most. This will hurt the Eagles more than it helps the Broncos. He was the face of the Eagle defense for years, and while he is up in years, he has a tremendous work ethic that rubs off on teammates.

I was a little surprised too because he has only a few years left to play, and he'd have a better chance getting to the Super Bowl in Philadelphia than in Denver.
