My new favorite song. Viva La Vida by Coldplay. You guys know this group? And are they American? For some reason I think they're from another country. Never heard of it til I saw them advertise it on tv. I just like it. Didn't mean to get the lyrics, thought I saved a different link, but that's ok, the lyrics are interesting. smile

Two that I like:

1. There was a comedian, Eddie Lawrence, who was popular in the 1950's. His "shtick" (or routine) was called "The Old Philosopher". Here's a part of that routine:

.

2. John Denver singing "Annie's Song". Dedicated to the two Annie's in my life... my second wife and TIS:

Funny songs are, well, fun. Here are two of my favorites from over the years:

1. Harry Chapin was the best "story-teller" singer I've ever heard. Many of you know his big hits like "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Taxi" (which are wonderfully told songs) but he has tons of lesser-known songs worth a listen. This one is titled "30,000 Pounds of Bananas", a song about a truck driver delivering a load of bananas. His truck loses control and ends up at the bottom of a hill all messed up. Notice how the pace of the song picks up as the truck gains speed on it's out-of-control journey:

.

2. The Kingston Trio was a folk-singing group that was big in the early 60's. Here's one of there "funny" songs about a commuter who gets caught on the MTA (subway in Boston) and was unable to get off the train because there was a fare hike and he couldn't pay the extra nickle:

I'm having a blast listening/watching some of my old favorites there (YouTube) now... Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.

Just listened to "Mambo Number 5" by Lou Bega (remember that one?)... what a fun song!

SC,

I too loved Annie's Song. Very pretty melody. smile I never was a huge John Denver fan but I liked some of his stuff like Rocky Mountain High. He had a nice voice.

I also remember the Kingston Trio song once I played it. I always remembered the title as "And He Never Returned." Didn't they sing Tom Dooley too? Great folk music voices in the early 60's. Didn't recognize Harry Chapin's song, but like what I know of is music as well.

I'll have to check for some of my favorties. YouTube seems to have just about anything doesn't it?

TIS

Oh, and Eddie Lawrence rang a bell when I played it. Could I have seen him on Ed Sullivan? I know I've seen him before.

Yeah, the Kingston Trio were folkies back when folk music was FOLK MUSIC. They sang songs by other artists mostly, and yes, "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley" was their biggest hit.

That Chapin song was certainly not one of his biggest hits, mainly because of it's "light" nature (i.e. it was funny), but he was every bit as good as Dylan when it came to telling a story in song (and that's saying A LOT!).

Also, Eddie Lawrence (The Old Philosopher) MIGHT have appeared on Ed Sullivan, but I mostly remember him from the old comedy records my parents used to have (remember when Redd Foxx used to do those off-color records?).

I loved Topo Gigio. I remember that Gabe Kaplan did an absolutely hilarious routine based on Ed Sullivan showing up drunk one night to host the show and saying what was REALLY on his mind.

SC, I know this song well. It is about a road near my hometown that I've driven many times: Moosic Street.

He - (Simón Bolívar) - was shaken by the overwhelming revelation that the headlong race between his misfortunes and his dreams was at that moment reaching the finishing line. The rest was darkness. "Damn it," He sighed. "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!"

So what’s the labyrinth?

That’s the mystery isn’t it? Is the labyrinth living or dying? Which is he trying to escape - the world, or, the end of it?

This is a little weird...
Quote:
Imagine: Lennon in TV ad 28 years after his death

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Imagine, John Lennon makes a television commercial for charity -- 28 years after his death.
Through the use of digital technology, the former Beatle urges people across the United States to support a campaign by "One Laptop per Child" to deliver tough, solar-powered XO laptop computers to the world's poorest children.
"Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want," a voice and video image of Lennon has been created to say.
"I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way. You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world," says the musician in a play on one his best known songs -- 1971's "Imagine."
Lennon was shot and killed as he and his wife, Yoko Ono, arrived at their Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980.
Ono approved the "One Laptop per Child" commercial, which was launched on Thursday and will be shown on donated broadcast and cable time. It can also be seen at www.youtube.com/olpc.
The "One Laptop per Child" Foundation, created in 2005, is a spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and started producing the XO laptop late last year at a manufacturing cost per machine of less than $200.

Yeah, that's kind of strange.

When will they have JFK come back to endorse a proposition to ban guns? We might see revived celebrities in all sorts of commercials.

Although 2pac and Elvis won't have to be computer generated. They could just be in the commercials themselves.

kind of like what they did in Forrest Gump but using it for a commercial. At least it's not for an actual product.
