With people still using the campaign thread for useful discussion and this thread not serving its original purpose, I have decided to rename it smile

Congratulations on everyone who supported Obama. For the sake of this country I hope I'm wrong about him and he is the greatest president we've ever seen. I hope "change" is for the better and not just for the sake of change because things can always get worse. I hope they don't.

Is Barrack a Muslim or not?

Sorry to be late to the party folks...

But if there had to be a state that defines this election, it would be VIRGINIA.

Yes we all know that Obama's victory there is the first Democratic Virginia win since 1964, but surely most of you realize the historical irony and implication.

Virginia was the land of our first President and Father of our Country in George Washington....the origin of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, both who wrote world-altering documents about humanity's unalienable civil rights and government's accountability to the people in the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution.....

The state of one of America's most beloved war generals in Robert E. Lee, despite fighting against that government.......The birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, who had that daffy urge for permanent world peace that would become the United Nations....

And what do they all have in common? Unescapable links to a racial history. Washington/Madison/Jefferson all owned slaves, Lee inherited his from Washington's family, and Wilson was an infamous racist.

And now a black man has won Virginia, the capital of the insurgent Confederate States of America who fought 4 brutal years to keep its states' rights to enslave his race, and I'm proud that the land of my parents, of my family which included both Union and Confederate soldiers, has become the symbol of our nation coming together.

Here's Obama's Keynote speech from the 2004 DNC convention. It was the first time most of us, including myself, ever heard of Obama.

Its funny you bring that up, for in discussing with some angry and disgruntled College Republican friends of mine, in the midst of my pitching that Obama potentially could be the JFK/Reagan of my generation, a well-liked rheotircal leader who made the public feel better about themselves.*

Then I realize, what if Obama is like Reagan, then what is the impact on Cinema?

This sounds self-serving, but the 1970s and recent 2000s all reflected the politics and emotions of those times, usually depressing, downer, and gritty, and I think produce better cinema than the 80s.

I mean look at some great shit in recent years: CHILDREN OF MEN, UNITED 93, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, the BOURNE movies, CASINO ROYALE, etc.

So does that mean that the 2010s will consist of Spielberg-esque sentimentalist popcorn schlock that we film buffs will be bitching at for the next few years?

*=which is why I think its weird when GOPers mocked the Obama campaign’s sappyness and that infomercial last week. That was Reagan 101 bitches.

One thing I hope comes out of this election. I hope the media stops using the reference "African-American". I'm a Euro-American and no one refers to me that way. Let's just be Americans. If you are from a certain cultural background and want to celebrate a custom from that culture, that's great; dance, sing, cook, dress, whatever. But I think we should move on and stop identifying minorities by their cultural background. It doesn't matter that a certain group only makes up 20% of the population. We're all in this big salad bowl of people. We're all mixed together. So cut the shit. Why don't we just identify people by their hair color...."He's the first red-headed President". Pretty stupid, huh? But if you want to play the race thing, I think it's great that we have a President who is Afro-Euro-American. Imagine if Tiger Woods was President; he would be the first Cau-black-asian President. Let's start identifying people by their character and then we might just take a step to really becoming civilized.

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, whoever humbles himself will be exalted - Matthew 23:12

George Washinton and Thomas Jefferson were red-heads. Actually, I like this designation. McCain went with the white and balding look, and Biden went with the massive hair transplant plugs. remember how bald he was 20 years ago. Similarly, Obama's graying looks too much/too fast to be natural. I suspect there was a dye judge to make him appear older and more experienced.

You may be on to something, MaryCas. smile
