I'm sick of Favre's constant need for attention. I feel bad for the kid who's supposed to be the starter this year. It's a huge distraction.

Athletics Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs for Sean Gallagher, Matt Murton, Eric Patterson and minor leaguer John Donaldson.

That's a great pick up for the Cubs. They did better than the Brewers. They'll keep Harden for more than 3 months.

At the same time, it's a shame for the A's, who are competing for the post-season, but can't afford to keep the stars. It's a sad fact in baseball that the low payroll teams don't want their good players to become too good. I saw it with the Expos when they had Vlad Guerrerro and many others.

The A's are stockpiling talent for their new stadium. They won't be a low payroll team forever.

Right now Billy Beane is letting out a huge sigh of relief that Harden stayed healthy enough to trade him. Didn't the Cubs learn their lesson with Wood and Prior?

Big risk/big reward for a guy who has managed to find himself on the DL each year he's been in the bigs. I would rather have had Sabathia, but Harden is a strong pitcher when healthy.

The Cubs will be better off with Harden over Sabathia, Don Sicilia. In the 2001 postseason, Sabathia won a game by benefiting from a 17 run outburst on offense. His lone win in the 2007 playoffs was when his offense scored double digits against the NYY and Sabathia was very erratic. He was dreadful in his other two starts against Boston. It may appear to be sour grapes on my part, but this guy is not a big game pitcher. He'll win the games in May, June, etc. but he's not a true ace. An ace saves his best stuff for October like Schilling, Pedro, and Beckett have in the past. In addition, he's already on the borderline of begin very overweight, which will just be compounded once he turns 30.

All good points, GO. I'm actually more worried about Harden's health more than anything. You have to get to October first and I guess my thought is Harden can't help if he's on the DL.

So are you as a Chicago fan happy to see Kerry Wood back, albeit in a different role but successful nonetheless? It's hard to believe his 20 strikeout game was already 10 years ago.

She went on a $100,000 shopping spree. Boo hoo, the guy's worth about $200 million. He probably spends that much on strippers and porn.

Oh wait, that's Christy Brinkley's ex.

I hope for your sake DB that Harden is healthy for the rest of the season and beyond, but he has been the Bay Area's Wood and Prior for too long now. I don't think he'll stay healthy until the end of the season.

That was a fantastic match. Best match I've ever seen. Funny thing was, We were out that morning so we had it on DVR. When the recording finished at the 6-hour mark (the alloted time), the match wasn't even done yet (right at the 5th set rain delay). We quickly got on the internet to find out who actually won. We got to see the rest of it when they replayed the match on ESPN Classic the next day.

I was a bit surprised to see Richie Sexson cut by Seattle. This guy is not that old and has had decent power numbers. Granted he strikes out a lot, but I think he can help some contenders.

I am going to the Indians-Tampa game tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing the Rays - it is good for the sport to see some new blood winning games instead of the same few teams.

Have fun at the game tonight, goombah.

I'm guessing that someone may give Sexson a shot, but he has hurt the Mariners the past two years. His slugging pct. and BA have been way down, and he's hit only 11 homers.

He's had some very productive years though.

In a van down by the river!
Quote:
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Brett Favre has asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team after apparently being told that his latest retirement reversal wasn't welcome news in Green Bay.

The team said it would do "what's right" in response to Favre's request, which was first reported by ESPN.

"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms," the team's statement read.

"We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett's press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team."

The 38-year-old Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career, but almost immediately began dropping hints that he was having second thoughts.

The Packers statement said Favre now has the right to petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to be reinstated, at which point he would return to the team's active roster.

But the statement did not specify what the Packers would do after that, beyond doing "what's right and in the best interest of the team."

If the team has committed to moving forward without Favre, their options once he was reinstated would include trading him to another team or releasing him so he would be free to sign with the team of his choice. The Packers already have committed to going at quarterback with Aaron Rodgers, a first-round pick in 2005 who has been sitting behind Favre for his first three seasons in the NFL.

Releasing Favre presents the possibility of him signing with NFC North rivals Minnesota or Chicago, where he would be an upgrade over the incumbent QBs. If the Packers traded him, there would be teams outside the division such as Baltimore or Tampa Bay and perhaps Washington that would be interested. There also has been speculation that he could go to Miami for disgruntled defensive end Jason Taylor, the 2006 defensive player of the year.

It would be an ugly end to what has been one of the most celebrated partnerships in recent NFL history.

"As with all Packers greats, Brett's legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions," the statement read. "Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Friday that sources close to Favre and the team told him agent James "Bus" Cook formally asked the Packers for Favre's release in a letter because the Packers were not receptive about Favre wanting to play again.

I've always hated Favre, every year his bullshit will he retire???? stuff pops up. Thought it was over til this. But now at least it's more interesting this year.

In other news, I've requested off work August 6,7,8 because I will be in Terre Haute at the Colts Training Camp.

Have they announced the starters yet for either team?

Halladayhas been terrific for a few years and will get in the game. He threw a gem tonight. I watched a couple innings. I would start Lee, who also pitched a shutout tonight, and Lincecum. It's about time the nation gets to see Lincecum on the big stage.

It's not in his divorce decree.

He didn't want to make it look like he had a home field advantage.

He doesn't give a shit.

I think he's out looking for Madonnna's birthday present. She is turning 50 next month, so he has to get just the right gift.

In all seriousness, A Rod should play since it is in his hometown team's stadium.

I'm not a huge fan of the homerun derby. It's like the slam dunk contest. I guess it would be nice for him to participate though since it's in his home ballpark though, but I wouldn't come too hard down on him.

I didn't buy his excuse that it messes up his swing. He's played at a high level for more than ten years. This exhibition isn't going to ruin him. Actually, when Bonds opted out of the contest (I think it was 2001) I admired his honesty for turning it down. When asked why he isn't doing it, he replied, "Because I'm an adult and I don't have to do it if I don't want to." I didn't admire the attitude though.

Ken Griffey was the big name in the game about 11 or 12 years ago when he stated he didn't want to do it, but reluctantly agreed to. He had to play a Sunday night game in Seattle, and then fly to Atlanta (I think), and I couldn't blame him for not wanting to participate.

While I probably won't be watching the whole thing (It's too long), I'll pick Lance Berman to win.

I vote for D. ARod doesn't want to look like crap.

Btw, I'm watching Josh Hamilton knock the hell out of the ball right now. He's just amazing. What a comeback story! He played locally in the minors as part of his comeback, and he's nothing short of incredible. He spends so much time talking to kids about his addiction days - now THAT'S a role model that kids can look up to, someone who almost lost it all and came back stronger than ever. 19 Home runs! Amazing!
