Bulls select the hometown player, Derrick Rose with the first pick. I hope he's more like Chris Paul than Jay Williams.

I still think it was a mistake the Knicks didn't take Eric Gordon. Only time will tell

Not only is the stadium located on one of the coldest windiest spots in San Francisco but the old style stadium didn't allow the wind to pass on through so it became like a hurricane of cold wind and food wrappers and garbage circulating around the stadium. They used to hand out these "Croix de Candlestick" pins to the fans who stayed for the full game.

I was so sad when they built a new stadium because I grew up in Candlestick, but Candlestick had to be one of the worst stadiums and the new stadium has to be one of the most beautiful in baseball and has become the place I'd rather be than anywhere else. Minor league games are fun, too. wink Saw the Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies Single-A team; the logo is Beth E's avatar wink ) last Friday and maybe again tomorrow. So nice that it's only 20 minutes away. cool

Cleveland seems like a great baseball town, am I wrong? I would love to visit there someday to see a game.

I agree that it was a classy gesture with how the front office honored Vizquel. He's better at 41 than that worthless hack, Jhonny Peralta, that we have now who is maybe 26. The organization did something similar for Sandy Alomar the year after he left.

To be honest, I'd take a little less class and gladly trade it for a championship. We do have a great baseball town, as evidenced by our 455 consecutive sellout streak at Jacobs Field from 1995-2001. This town went insane, particularly in 1995 when we made it back to the World Series for the first time in 41 years.

Having said all that, Cleveland has been, is, and will always be, a football town first and foremost. But we rabidly support all three of our major teams.

I just wish they showed the Indians games here. I still hate how they changed the name of the field where they play.

Weaver, Arredondo hold Dodgers hitless but Angels still lose (Yes, my pitching staff this week. A 30-point loss!)

I can't believe this is the fifth time a team has won a game without getting a hit! I thought this would have been the first. Shows how important defense is.

Andy Hawkins did it as a Yankee about 15 years ago. Throw in a couple of errors, a walk, a sacrifice, and presto! You get a couple of runs. I think he lost, 2-1.

It just emphasizes my belief that pitching and defense win games. You don't need to hit to score.

Imagine all those games where an error costs the team one or two runs, or you have a player make an amazing diving catch to save a run or two. I think it usually goes unnoticed when the score is higher like 6-5 but I agree pitching and defense wins games. Hitting helps too though wink

I remember reading about two pitchers both going into extra innings without giving up a hit. One of them eventually gave up a hit (and lost the game) in the 11th (or so).

Can you imagine that happening now???

I'm too lazy to look up the details, but it happened around 1920.

That sounded familiar to me, but I can't place it. In the meantime, here are ten facts about MLB no-hitters:

Thanks for those facts, klyd. You always come up with good stuff.

I went to a game that almost made that list... I was at Bill Rohr's first game when he pitched against the Yankees (he played for Boston then) in 1967. I cut school to see him go 8 2/3 hitless innings only to give up a single to catcher Elston Howard.

That would have made the list. I never saw a no-hitter live, in majors or minors. I think the closest I came was a game where a pitcher had it broken up in the 7th.

Another oddity:

Through baseball-reference.com I came across a double header between the Red Sox and Indians in Cleveland on 4/12/1992, in which the Tribe won the first game, 2-0, despite not recording a hit off Matt Young. The Sox scattered 9 hits, but couldn't score.

In the second game the Indians lost, 3-0, and only recorded two hits in 9 innings: a Carlos Baerga single in the first, and Glenallen Hill's third inning single. Again the Red Sox had 9 hits

2 games, 2 hits, 1 win.

ESPN's Baseball Tonight is having a "Take Me Out ot the Ballgame" contest among musicians of all different genres. I really like how they are each able to put their own spin on such a familiar song. Peter Gammons was surprisingly good. I voted for the Punch Brothers.

For the few NBA fans here I'm sure you can feel my pain. Baron Davis opted out of his contract late last night and has already verbally agreed to a contract with the Clippers. cry

This is bad. There was hopes that the Warriors were going to improve to an elite level but now Chris Mullin is going to have to pull off a miracle just to keep the Warriors good.

Thanks for the link, Freddie. I love what the Punch Brothers did, but I cast my vote for Ozomatli. Gretchen Wilson had a great effort too.

I had heard Gammons sing before. He used to play with a cover band. He apparently is as interested in music as he is in baseball.

It will definitely be a huge blow to the Warriors but I heard they have made a big offer to Elton Brand. Although there is no guarantee that Brand will accept the offer (which I heard is in the neighbourhood of 90 mill. not sure over how many years) and he may very well stay with the Clippers who should be much improved next season with the addition of Davis.

Why are the Cincinnati Reds wearing camaflouge jerseys? Those are so gay. I think they're too feminine to even be mentioned in The Ladies thread.

SC, I heard it mentioned on our broadcast, but only through one source, I believe. Milwaukee Sentinel, I think? Anyway, no certain confirmation that I know of. If true, it's gonna make for a tighter race in our division!

Our game was supposed to start at 12:30 PM (Central) today, got stuck in a long rain delay, and we just lost it now, in the 17th inning. 5 hours and 35 minutes...talk about an all-day affair.

A few innings back, we had an interesting event. Ausmus was at bat and was called out on a strikeout when the ball fouled off his bat, hit the catcher's shoulder, flipped around in his hands, and eventually was caught by him in his glove. Ausmus had an argument, which our announcers later discussed. Quoting the rulebook, it turns out that the ball cannot be caught on a rebound like that, because it must first hit the glove. So in this case, having hit the shoulder first, it could not be caught for an out. The HP umpire asked for help, but as our guys said, since nobody else saw otherwise, it couldn't be overruled. That'd be a case for instant replay. I was interested in learning the details of that rule, which I'd never known fully.

Thanks, gina. The local tv stations are now confirming the trade.

As for that foul tip... this WOULD be a good argument for instant replay!

I think I remember this scenario once mentioned in the "So You Think You Know Baseball" feature in an old issue of Baseball Digest. I love the quirkiness of the rules.

Is anybody else sick of the will he/won't he saga with Brett Favre? I really liked the guy throughout his career, but give it up already. If he forces the issue to return, he's putting the Packers in an awful spot. The negative publicity of not wanting him to return or trading/releasing Favre will put the organization in a no-win situation.

*********

"Baseball Digest" - Klydon I have not heard mention of that publication in years. I used to subscribe when I was a kid. Awesome stuff.
