I have never read the book, only seen the movie. I love to read, but if its the smae as the movie it would just be wasting my time, or would it? Tell me why or why not I should read the book.

Just read it. It's so much better than the movie. *sigh*...should've read the book first though...

Boy, Victorious...you sure have opened up a Pandora's Box; trust me, I've been through this.

You'll get alot of recommendations to READ the book, that it has details and insight to parts & characters that you wouldn't know otherwise, and that's probably true. Not having read the book, and reading on this board about some of those 'specifics' I can tell you that you certainly wouldn't be wasting your time by reading it, but can still fully appreciate the films if you don't.
So, if you love to read anyway, might as well go ahead & give it a whirl.....!!!

Read it. You will learn things about the characters that you wouldn't know otherwise. Plus, there are lots of interesting parts in the book that are not included in the movie. Some are good, like the parts about the furnace repair scam with Sonny, or the handling of the Capone hit-men by Luca Brasi. Others are not so good, like the time spent on Dr. Segal and Lucy Mancini. There is another character, Nino, that is Johnny Fontaine's buddy that doesn't appear at all in the movie.

It is a great book.

Ok, I am convinced. I am going to the library to pick it up tommorow. I appreciate the input.

I fully urge everyone to read the book, before seeing the movie. I was sitting around home, bored shitless and my mum threw me the book and I started reading and was completely drawn into Mario Puzo's world of the Mafia dynasty. I finnished the book in 1 week and to my absolute delight they were showing all 3 movies in a row that weekend. I was so rapt and reading the book makes all the killings in the Baptism scene make sense. Anyone that says that the book is a waste of time should not even bother coming on here and insulting my intelligence because it makes me very angry.

Ever since I read The Godfather, I've been drawn in Puzo's world. If you don't read it because of the movie, you should read it because its a great book.

It's a great book. I enjoyed comparing the actors from the movie with the character descriptions that Puzo gave them in the book. Sonny was described as being a lot bulkier in the book, but I think Pacino fit Michael perfectly.
