Because my favourite movie is The Godfather, do you still think I have a bad taste? I don`t like it because, Tony Montana prefers to solve things with violence than his brain like Vito or Michael, of course we are talking about differents movies, and I did not like the ending when Montana dies. I would rather him to kill or his enemies, especially the one living in Bolivia.

I like Scarface for the reasons that you dislike it, Don Pappo Nepolitano. (The last scene of) Scarface was not like many other generic movies.

overrated it maybe...but its still a movie that i can sit down and enjoy. its not the godfather, and it was never meant to be the godfather, so comparisons are not appropriate. but i also wonºt say he has bad taste because he doesnºt like the movie...come on guys, lets let the guy have his opinion...but voice it when you start a thread.

Scarface is a very entertaining and enjoyable movie. Al Pacino does a fantastic job as Tony Montana. While it is not a top of the line classic, it is a cult classic within it's own rite. It does have a large following. By no means does it compare to a Godfather type movie, but it does carry itself well. The Godfather movie is a deep movie with a main plot, and multiple sub-plots with almost every character. Scarface on the other hand is more of an action type movie with a general plot. It happens to be one of my favorite movies. Not a movie where, like the Godfatehr, you can watch it a hundred times and always pick up something new or different. But definitely a movie that you can watch over and over again and again and just sit back and enjoy it everytime.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about movies, and it is not fair to accuse someone of not having any taste, etc., because they don't enjoy a movie the same way that you do.

I love this movie.
I think Al Pacino was a better actor in Scarface than in the GF movies.
Why didn`t he earned an oscor for his role as Tony Montana?

I feel Scarface is perhaps one of the most over-rated films of all-time. While it is a great film to watch, and a must-see for any Pacino fan, it is immensly over-rated. I feel that Oliver Stone speant too much time concentrating as making it as differant as he could in comparison to The Howard Hawkes 1932 version that he completely neglected any substance or moral. The 32' version--which took place in a prhobition-era Chicago, for anyone unfamiliar--had a bit more to it. While today it would fail to come through, for its time it had much more of a message than the DePalma 1983 verion; although, I find this to be true of most of the gangster films of the 30s and 40s. The only thing that brings this script to life is a combination of great visuals and quite the performance from Al Pacino.

But the one thing that really bothers me about it is the lack of substance. Although the great lot of the characters depicted in gangster films come to a similar fate, in some cases repeatitively, I feel that Tony Montana's final punishment isn't represented as charismatically or as originally as say, Henry Hill of Goodfellas. The final shootout is indeed very fun and entertaining to watch (I enjoyed it on the level of cheap-thrills), it is pure asthetic's. It give little dramatic-ease or climax to the story, if any.

"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

Scareface is a great movie and Al Pacino's acting in it is mind blowing......He really turned it on to play that role....wow think how hard it would be to talk like that throughout an entire movie.. for months....but on the other hand it definitly doesn't compare to the GF triology but it is up there in the best movies of all time......It is a great film....It's jsut missing some of the things that would have made it a GREAT GREAT film like GF I II and yeah I and II....(III)

There seems to be a new "Scarface is overrated" thread every week! There should be more "Madagascar is overrated" threads

Scarface was an Ok movie. nothing near the godfather. what made the movie good was al's performance. but there was no realism in the movie. it was like video game.

Great movie but not Al Pacino's best work he was way better in the godfather than he was in that movie I didn't think his accent was very good lol maybe it was just me but I thought Mike was his best character Tony would have to be his worst.

I also love Scarface. Although The Godfather movies are my favorite, no one can deny that Al Pacino's performance in Scarface is awesome as well. (Just in a different way.)

The characters of Tony Montana and Michael Corleone cannot be compared. They come from totally different backgrounds and are two totally different individuals.

Scarface is a great movie! One of my favorites! smile

Scarface and the Godfather should not be compared. They are two seperate movies. Althought they are both "Gangster" films they are on two different time periods, and two different kinds of gangsters. Although a little comparison can be made of Tony's life and believe it or not Vito's. They both came to this country with nothing and built empires, the only difference of course Vito lived to pass the empire down to his children. Whereas we all know Tony's fate. But it can be said that if Tony would have followed rule no. 2 "Dont getr high on your own supply" his empire might have stood the test of time. Because when not all "coked-up" Tony was smart and cunning and brave as hell.

Some valid points Gangster_10.

I love both movies for their own reasons, but as you said, they cannot be compared.

First time i saw scarface i was disapointed (I thought i was going to see a movie about al capone LOL) then i thought, all this unneccessary violence and cursing... then, after seeing it again and again over the years, you have to love it... sure, he is insane, but its a great fantasy flick... and the moral reasoning... he lost his life because he was not willing to kill a politician in front of his family, he rebelled against the authorities, paid the price, but in my opinion died a hero, if that is at all possible... i can only equate it to highplains drifter, where the outlaw comes in, proves he is one of the better guys even though an outlaw, cleans house, and then rides off into the sunset, except here, he dies in his jacuzzi lol... love it or hate it, any pacino or "shoot 'em up" mafia collector should have it in their library.

it is overrated but nevertheless a great film

I think Scarface (1983) came just at the right time, historically and politically it captures the 'me first' attitude of the nineteen eighties just before that attitude became part of popular culture.

With that in mind it's interesting that Oliver Stone was the scriptwriter; the whole 'age of excess' ethos links nicely with the Stone-directed 'Wall Street'.

Only problem I have is Pacino playing a latino. Although he does do an amazing job.

my comment was a bit of an inside joke. one of my friends (a very Italian guy) dislikes very much that Pacino played a latino. He also dislikes Andy Garcia playing an Italian. I was just making fun of him. Since he is pretty much an idiot, but he has been very consistant in his views.

I liked it, and I didn't like it. When I watched it for the first time I thought it was great, but then when I went to watch it again I found myself fast forwarding, or using the menu selection to get to parts I wanted to see.

Sorry 'bout that, guys.I ment to reply on what you said there.I'm new,so this is my first time doing the "reply to quote" thing. eek Anyway, what I ment to say was this: No disrespect, but I think your friend is silly for complaining about Al Pacino playing a latino. It is an actor's job to play something he is not, that's what being an actor is all about. If you can act well,(like Mr.Pacino can); then that is all that counts. It is that latin role that helped establish him as a succsessful actor today. But everyone is entitled to there opinion of coarse. smile

I watched it for the first time on cable last week. Thought it was rather dated, but Pacino was superb. And how hot was Michelle!

I just bought the two disc DVD set of Goodfellas. Am going to watch it today.
