Very true but the early rap wasn't like the rap we have tody. When I'm watching Scarface I'd rather listen to the original music, even though some here don't like it because it's "too 80s cheesy." I however love it and would rather listen to the original music than to hear Ja Rule's 2005 remix of Dance, Dance, Dance. The music just wouldn't match the time the movie was made and would stick out too poorly (not to mention piss me off). As many have said, WHO CARES that Scarface "influences" rappers!? NO ONE!

The director's intentions shouldn't be desecrated with a bunch of poser wannabes. They had color photography in the 80's, but that doesn't mean someone who is inspired by Raging Bull should change the film to color.

Exactly. If they ever made Raging Bull in color I'd watch it but I'd hate it. Don't mess with success. I can understand now how all those Star Wars fans got so upset when Lucas went back and added things to the movies (such as Hayden Christianson at the end of Return of the Jedi).

I don't think SCARFACE is overrated. If anything, its a pretty damn good movie, but not a great movie.

As for it not having any "depth"...its not deep or anything, its just a big budget epic gangster movie which works really well.

I'll do a big review of this movie sometime, but when I feel like it....

Personally, Scarface is my favorite movie. But, in my critical opinion, movies like the Godfather, Goodfellas, and Casino are way better since they have greater "depth" in them

Wow, a post about Scarface, and not one mention of Steven Bauer's "Manny Ray."

For me, he makes this movie enjoyable with repeated viewings. If John Travolta had the role as was original intended, it would not have been the same. Manny provides what little depth there is in the film - the scene where he is driving Gina home from the club is one example - and he is endearing. You feel bad for Manny at the end, and kind of despise Tony for what happens. With that, you kind of don't care about Tony's fate because of the type of person he became (and he wasn't all that good to begin with).

The thing with this movie is this: if you watch it over and over again, you pick up little things you may have missed the last time. You think Tony is so stoned out that he doesn't care about what happened to Manny, yet you get to hear little utterances about how he loved him when he's mumbling to himself just before the siege.

The movie was long, let's face it, and it was long with just the basic elements in place. It could have gotten more depth if they did the film ala Kill Bill, Part I & Part II. But you couldn't possibly fit everything into "Scarface."

In the end, they did the best with what they had. And it is good enough for me. I may not care enough about Tony Montana to feel badly for "his fall," but I do enjoy watching their exploits.
