There are a lot of people who think that Scarface is just a movie with a bunch of Cocaine, swearing and violence, and that's all. This is a huge misconception. It is actually a very deep, symbolic, and intellectual masterpiece. People should start to realize this!

Symbolic? Any possible symbolism came from it's original, as the only change is the update of the story with more violence.

It's a very stylish and good movie, but ridiculously overrated over the years. It's a story that's been done over and over and hell, it's a remake itself. Performance and style escalate it. What symbolism do you refer to? "Drugs are bad, crime doesn't pay." Excuse me while I try to feel new to this. I like this better then the original but still.

dv...you have to give it more credit then that...i also agree it's overrated but to say you can't see the symbolism. can you see the symbolism in aurthor millers a death of a salesman? both are about the american dream...the idea that you can come to this country and be great...but only to discover there is a price to pay. now, where willy lohman is so absorbed with becoming rich that he never amounts to anything, tony does become wealthy. but he pays the price of selling his soul, and damning himself from this existance. and like the american dream this movie ends in trajedy. he dies, he doesn't live his full life appreciating what he has recieved in the land of dreams. the end.

Death of a Salesman is not a remake, and it is a much deeper story then even the original Scarface.

i agree with mr. soprano. There is tons of sybolism but this movie is over-rated, still a classic however

dv i didn't say death of a salesmen is a remake im just saying...like it scarface is out to show that there isn't any real american dream. but it's too bad that that is the only part of what i wrote that you focused on.

I can see where your coming from mr. soprano, however, this movie can hardly compare to Death of a Salesman. This movie, while very good, is just about a guy who shoots his way to the top. While, still a classic, very unoriginal.

I disagree.

At the time when Scarface was put out in theaters the whole 'Hollywood' shooter up thing hadnt really taken affect. This is one of the first movies that had bigger explosions and big shot-em-up scenes

The shoot his way to the top movies have been done several times before Scarface. The fact of the matter is the only new thing is the setting. It has the same plot and scenes as the original.

First of all, Scarface is a drama, not a shoot'em movie or action movie or anything like that.
The movie is 2 hrs and 40 mis ... do you know how many minutes involve weapons?less than 30.
Sure, lots of bullets in the end, but that doesnt turn it into a shoot'em or action movie.

Secondly, the movie is a remake, the movie has no storyline.
Yes.
Its not the tale, its HOW you tell the tale.
Scarface does it best.

For example, the movie "A fistful of dollars" :
It is also a remake (Yojimbo) and how much of a story is there?
So is it a so-so movie? Hardly.
There are so many aspects to every movie, storyline is just one of them.
Again in this case, its not the story, its HOW you tell the story.

Thirdly, you cant compare a movie to a play, youre talking 2 different dimensions.

P.S. - Miller is one of my fav authors and Death of a Salesman is a great play, but IMO Miller's best work is All My Sons.
