I respectfully disagree. The first time I had Jewish deli was 3 years ago when we went to that Harold's, I loved it. I would like to go again someday.

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

Never had tongue (as food anyway) but there is so much more to the deli than your pastrami and corned beef, as much as I LOVE these foods, even better is the smoked fish, the whiting, sturgeon, kippered herring, there is a famous place in NYC in soho that specialize in these smoked fish... (check colameco.com, it was on his PBS show). A place in town is kosher, and they won't even let you buy milk in the same purchase of the other products like cabbage rolls, potato pancakes, pickles, bagels, slaw, they have so many items and its good to know places like this still exists... Ahh, i can see myself now with a frozen bottle of stoli and a smoked fish platter from kosherkornernj.com -- last St. Patrick's day the town's oldest irish restaurant/tavern was not placing "to go orders" so i went to Kosher Korner for my corned beef! This year, I plan to make the feast on my own, Shop-Rite has a mega-sale, and if you get coupons its like $1/lb and free potatoes... check it out, the only thing I need to do to complete it is stock up on the Guiness!!

I do love potato pancakes and I enjoy lox, and other smoked fish. And I do enjoy a nice crunchy pickle.

Mig, I know there are tons of people that love it. It just doesn't thrill me.

I had lunch with my Pop today at Epstein's, up in Scarsdale. Chicken noodle soup, corned beef sandwiches, potato knishes and 3 or 4 pickles of different varieties.

Yummy!

Well let's bring in the Toronto Jew in on this one...

Centre St. Deli: excellent smoked meat (by Toronto standards), plus other deli fare. Not in city core though, in Thornhill well within walking distance of my house.

Moe Pancer Deli: very famous, good omelettes.

United Bakery: not a deli per se, but nevertheless yummy.

Shopsy's is meh.

Pickle Barrel is a Toronto institution and contains some Jewish qualities to it, although it's heading towards a Cheesecake Factory like direction.

But, the best deli in the world might be Montreal SMoked Meat, which the best is found at Schwartz's in Montreal.

"Chinese - Szechuan Gourmet (which is really in Vaughan but I think of it as North York because it's so close)."

It's in North York, right along Steeles, but nevertheless in North York.

To get Jewish deli here in AZ, I have to drive 100 miles south to the Valley (Phoenix/Scottsdale). Goldman's is not very good. Chompy's is better, but very expensive.

When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, there was a kosher-style deli practically on every streetcorner, particularly near subway and elevated stations.

TB, have you ever tried to get your deli Fed Ex'd?

I only ask because I have neighbors in Florida who swear by Barney Greengrass's overnight service. That's the one on 86th and Amsterdam.

When I would cover Riverside (Amsterdam and 76th), that was my favorite breakfast spot. Their scrambled eggs with lox and onions? Holy crap! smile

PB, I've checked several NY delis and specialty stores, but the cost gets prohibitive for air freight. For example, each pound of corned beef (or pastrami, or tongue) from Katz's exceeds $25 when shipping and packing are added. And the possible risk of spoilage due to mishandling or delay isn't a trivial factor. Anoother: can't get a decent bialy here. I checked Kossar's, on the lower east side. Bialys are about 50 cents--but with shipping, 3 dozen go for close to $100.

TB, my former nanny used to ship food to her son when he was away at college. And I don't mean some cookies, either. She would bake a pan of lasagna or baked ziti, and then freeze it. She would take it to the post office just before closing and send it by overnight mail. When it got to him the next morning, he would put it in the refrigerator, and then into the oven that night. She would do this at least once a week.

No more Rascal House on Collins. It's GONE!! I couldn't believe it! It's some stupid gourmet market/cafe (translate "gourmet" for "overpriced").

I know. We spoke about this, Babe. However, when I made that post over a year ago, they were still open. On their last legs, but still open. frown

I'm glad you did, Babe. I showed it to my Dad earlier when he came down for dinner, and he got a kick out of it. My parents had a place in Sunny Isles, which is how I fell in love with Florida to begin with. Anyway, my Mom LOVED that place, so it brought back some nice memories for him. smile

My dad and my uncle died six weeks apart, so my mom and her sisters used to rent a place down there every winter. It's a great area. It's losing some of it's "flavor" as it becomes more gentrified, but it still has some of the best restaurants and shopping anywhere.

Did you ever eat at Mott Street in Hallandale? Food is wonderful and the prices are great. And then there's the NMB Ale House, of course!!

Never ate at MOTT STREET, although my neighbor in Delray raves about it.

I've eaten in just about every "Ale House" in Florida. lol

My favorite is the one in Boynton Beach. They have the BEST spinach-artichoke dip ever.

I think it's the best chain restaurant around (although the chain is limited to Florida).

I've only eaten at the NMB Ale House, but we inevitably find ourselves drawn to it for several meals each stay.

Do yourself a favor and try Mott Street. You'll love it.

Will do.

The best part about the Ale Houses are the drink specials. They're unbelievable. The one is Boca is on Glades Road. I had to leave my car there once!

True story. lol

I had a huge bagel with lox, cream cheese and onion at Epstein's in Yonkers today. Side of home made french fries.

Hey, what better place for an Italian-American Catholic to have lunch on a Lenten Friday?
