Cheech and Chong were good back in the day, but are dated now IMHO. I am sure I saw at least their first movies (Up In Smoke?), but mostly remember their albums. In particular, Jesus trying to cross the boarder, and of course who can forget "Dave's Not Here!"

Of course back in the 70's the album that had a zigzag the size of the album inserted inside was a plus for some.

Okay, I have to admit... That is a very clever and funny marketing technique.

A pity that the planned-Cheech & Chong reunion movie got cancelled because ole Chong was on the Bong when the cops found him.

Anyway, FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS isn't a druggie movie Irish as much as someone would argue PULP FICTION is just about violence and drugs.

It was Hunter S. Thompson's time capsule view of America in the 1970s, as typified as he was trying to cover a bike race in Las Vegas. A basic sports story instead became Thompson's commentary of the nation. Certainly Depp in the film describes the high-tide "mark" left from the 60s drug culture and the waters receeding further and further away.

The fact that Terry Gilliam was willing to go all out for the movie, at the high risk of turning people off severly, shows how ballsy that genius prick is.

Depp and Del Toro kick ass for the Lord, and Depp delivering easily the best outstanding legend-creating performance of his respected career.

FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (1998) - ****

Word.

I feel, aside from the "wave" speech, Duke's final words on Tim Leary, at the end of the film, are very important in resolving the theme of the movie/book.

"What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole lifestyle that he helped create. A generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old mystic fallacy of the acid culture: the desperate assumption that somebody, or at least some force, was tending the light at the end of the tunnel."

"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. Full Metal Jacket, but Lou Gossett used the same line in 1982's An Officer And A Gentleman.

Man, I'm a day late and a dollar short...as usual! Hate I missed this thread, especially when 300 was being discussed. I thought it was a delightfully different movie, sort of like Sin City meets Troy. Awesome acting (but Butler needs to leave the Snake Plissken role to Kurt Russell ;)), and out-of-this-world cinematography. I think it's the best thus far in '07.

Grindhouse looks pretty sucky just from the cheesy trailers (yeah, I KNOW it's supposed to look cheesy). But Tarantrino needs to stop his exploration of other genres and stick with what I think he does best: crime dramas.

I'm a little old for Pirates of the Carribean, but, darn it, I got sucked into watching the first two and now I have to see the third just to see how it comes out! Same with Spiderman 3.

That's why I've loved his last 2 films more than his previous work. The Kill Bills opened me up to not only Japanese Cinema, but foreign movies in general. Now I'm slowly getting into some Grind House films. I say continue to bring them on Mr. Tarantino.

The only reason I like the franchise is because of Johnny Depp. Although the first installment did surprise me very much and I enjoyed it enormously. However, I'm kinda like you with the third installment. I'm more excited for other films but going just to see how it ends.

I heard Keith Richards is supposed to do a cameo in the third Pirates as Jack Sparrow's father. That oughta' be hilarious!

The Kill Bills were okay, though I'm more partial to Hero, which, I guess, must've really flopped.

eh?

HERO was a huge hit around the world before it finally was released in America, and it was more gravy for them. The Weinsteins made money from simply distributing it.

Again, Quentin Tarantino is a brand-name. His name alone sells movies.

I don't know what it actually did. I just assumed it must've flopped because I never heard much about it post-release and it seemed like it went to DVD awfully fast. I suppose I could've did a little digging on IMDB.com or something, but, frankly, I'm lazy. ;-)

I enjoyed Hero. It's my favorite Yimou Zhang film. I've also watched House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower since they've been released in the U.S. I'd rank them:

-Hero
-Curse of the Golden Flower
-House of Flying Daggers

Yimou Zhang is far too colourful and far-fetched to be anywhere near "good".

I'll stick to black-and-white neo-realist films, thanks.

But if I don't like black-and-white films, at least they don't stop becoming black-and-white.

Whereas comedies aren't comedies if they're not funny, right?

Just as horror films aren't horror films if they're not in some way frightening...?
