Yes it is a very important scene, for the reasons that Turnbull states.

And you liar, teller of tall tales: you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

I really think this scene should of stayed it too. But the guy who played Genco overacted i think.
Anyway when I first saw the godfather, sonny is yelling at Tom about how he wants to kill Tattalgia, and Sonny says..."God damn it if I had a wartime consiglieri that was sicilian I wouldnt be in this place. Papa had Genco, look what I got." So when Sonny made that remark I had no idea what he was talkin about until I came to these boards and actually started like studying the movie. So if that scene with Genco would of been kept in there it could of answered alot of questions.
I buy you out. You don't buy me out.

c'mon joe......
this scene shows how powerful and respected even the closest people to the Godfather thought he was....the man is on his deathbed asking Vito to scare DEATH away!!!! if that doesn't help to paint a picture, what could???
it's one of the most important scenes in the Trilogy, and a big mistake that it was cut....

Joltin Joe, I live in a somewhat small town called Clinton. Its right on the Mississippi where the eastern part of Iowa juts out toward Illinois.

Of course I've heard of Waterloo. I think you're the only other person besides me that is from Iowa on this board.

The scene also adds some depths to the subplot of how Tom is accepted in the family. It is intresting to see why he brings Johnny Fontaine instead of Tom (allthough he is on business, but Im sure someone else could have gone to reason with Wolts. After all; he ordered Tom to travel to Hollywood AFTER he said "All my sons"...

The Genco scene is nice and all, but there's too much removed (that is, time delay) from the young Genco from GF2 and the 2 minutes of the old Genco that was eventually cut from GF1. Genco was integral in GF2, for the most part. In GF1 it seemed like an afterthought. Of course, GF1 was made before GF2, but you get the idea. Coppola probably cut it out because of the "who's that" factor...
As for the "most important" scene cut from the Saga, I'd say it was the scene of Michael and Vito in the garden: "what about Sicily?... you gave your word, I didn't give mine...." After that, I'd say the scene where Sonny finds out it was Paulie who set up the old man, with the call from the telephone company guy (or whoever).
