Imagine one day instead of making The Godfather Part IV...

Paramount Pictures decides to REMAKE The Godfather Part I !!!!!
Would you accept such an idea like that???

I personally would NEVER accept such an idea like that because of many reasons!!!!

*What about you?
I really would like to know WHY? after you vote...

In theory, it seems like a good idea. However, with the way some movies are remade, it would be a disgrace to Francis Ford Coppola's work with the original. I just don't feel confident about who would be selected for the cast, or the way they would go about it.

Another thing, I don't want the GF to be glamorized like everything else in today's media. The GF is a great legend, something that should be referred to, but not the way the media does it. Kinda like the Holy Bible.

I would re-make it, but set it in the modern day in a non-mafia situation. And I wouldn't use any of the dialogue from the original film, or call it "The Godfather" I would shelve the gangster element of it and concentrate more on the novel's underlying themes: corruption in authority and the importance of family over society. I suppose it would really be a different film but "based upon" the Godfather

A GF IV is okay for me, but a remake isn't. The best part about GF I and II were the actors, who were some of the best of the last 30 years (Brando, De Niro, Pacino, Caan, Duvall,...). Plus they played their top part in The GF, an accumulation of quality
Actors whoressemble them could play a younger version of the characters in flashbacks in GF IV, but they could never replace the originals.
And who should direct it? Scorsese, Sergio Leone (is he still alive), ... ??

He would have been about 60, as he was born in 1929. Such a shame, he's one of my favourite directors of all time.

I agree with whoever said placing it in another setting, kind of like some directors do with Shakespeare. The themes and basic plot outline could be the same, but it would have to be completely different than the original movie or else it would be suicide for who ever was involved. I could see this story happening in a political family... something similar to the Kennedy's. Or make it really different, and set it in an African tribe with subtitles or something like that. Or communist Russia. Or fuedal Japan.

The GF themes can play out for a family in any time period, so I think something like this could work. But you'd have to distance yourself from the original. I mean this is THE most loved movie in American cinema...

It could be called, "A re-imagining of the themes present in The Godfather placed in a completely different setting."

I don't see any reason to remake the Godfather. The only films that I think are worth remaking are either those that are potentially great but let down by pretty stupid flaws, or those that are so badly dated that a modern version would improve them. Films like White Heat and The Public Enemy spring to mind.
For me, The Godfather is about as perfect as a film can get. So there is no room for improvement there. And as for it's age, I would say that generally films were much better in the 70s than they are today, so a modern approach to it wouldn't neccesarily be able to improve it. Plus the fact that Pacino, Duvall, Caan and Brando are among the best actors ever, and to replace them with an equally talented cast would be nigh on impossible.

I get the Shakespeare analogy, but I don't see any merit to a remake of this great film.

In fact the idea of a computer enhanced hit on Sonny is just awful.

I agree. A straight up modern remake of The Godfather would be a disaster. I can see some hack like Brett Ratner getting his hands on it and thinking that he's actually improving on the original film. Then they'd set it in Tokyo and cast Jackie Chan as Luca Brasi and Chris Tucker as Michael.

However, tweaking with the setting, but keeping the overall plot and theme of the movies intrigues me. Especially the feudal Japan one. That could be awesome. Plus it would be so different it wouldn't even resemble or feel like a Godfather movie. We'd just be watching and picking up on various plot points and themes.

I'd be smiling as I was doing that too. Most people here would too.

Nice to see other people in favour of a complete "makeover", shows I'm not completely mad

If it was going to be a "regular" remake (ie cover only the events of GFI, no rise to power stuff) then perhaps it could open with the attack on Bonasera's daughter (a very dramatic opening scene, two tough guys beating up a poor defenceless maiden). This would help the audience to understand Bonasera's anger. It should also show the actual job being done by Gatto and his men, and show Bonasera weeping with joy when he reads about it - i.e. the audience sees the whole Bonasera story from start to finish, rather than having it feature in two scenes only.

Another idea is to tell the same story as GFI, but shot from different points of view. So we don't see the horse in the bed or the hit on Vito, but we do see Gatto being approached and converted by Barzini's men, and Sonny conducting the war while Micheal is in Sicily. This would avoid the difficulty of re-making classic scenes while remaining faithful to the original film.

GODFATHER - THE MUSICAL

Complete with everyone's favorite tunes...

An Offer They Can't Refuse
It's My Family, It's Not Me...
How to Shoot a Crooked Cop
Lucy, I'll Knock You Silly (Cause I'm the Only One Who CAN)!
I Want To Meet Your Daughter....REAL BAD!!!
Baby, I Can Drive Your Car...BOOM!!

And all the rest.

My dream cast:

Joel Gray as VITO
Nathan Lane as SONNY
Matthew Broderick as MICHAEL

no

You left out:

Harvey Fierstein as Luca (or perhaps Fredo?)

And We need some dance numbers:

"Enter the Turk" with whirling dervishes
"The Lightening Bolt Tango"
"The Tom You're Out Shuffle"
and the "Death in the Tomato Patch Solo interpretive dance (at the end the kid comes out with the bug spray thing)

Harvey Firestein (or however you spell it) would be just divine as Bonasera.

Speaking of dance numbers...we'll probably need some sleeping fishes.

I like it. Get the same person who did the costumes for "Cats" and have about fifty "fishes" all hanging in front of a big blue backdrop and we can then lower Luca's Body into the "sea" to a snappy tune.

The idea of a Godfather remake is worse than a GF IV. Never, never would I watch this.

I really don't understand what the reason would be to remake The Godfather. I think the age of remakes is a disaster to film and people should be a bit more imaginative. Why screw up a wonderfully written and visually stimulating film?

it wouldn't surprise me if hollywood decided to do a remake, but i honestly don't see it coming anytime soon. at least i pray that it doesn't happen. too many good movies are remade into worse versions of the movie.
