we´ve been discussinG it in some places, but i thouGht it could need a thread of its own.

i have to admit, as much as i admire FFC´s work on GF I & GF II (i do NOT admire his worx on GFIII and if GF IV is about Vincent, i hope the footaGe´ll catch fire... :p ...), i really do like the idea of havinG another director takinG a turn on the matter.

Coppola has been the inventive spirit behind the Genuine atmosphere of the Godfather movies, but after GFIII i have the impression he has burnt out a little and his symbolism is even more slap-in-the-face as it used to be.

let´s assume the script of GFIV turns out to be a brillant script, it could be the movie you want to see (fill in own Godfather sequel fantasy here), and now all of Hollywood is on the chase for a director. who would your pick be?

would you only accept a director with american italian roots or even a Brit or a Chinese director or whatever if he´d have an interestinG vision?

IMO the most vital thinG for a GF sequel is refined character development (look at GFIII... ). Sam Mendes and Sofia Coppola have been mentioned, both would be intriGuinG choices.

i´d add P.T.Anderson, because he proved himself capable of handlinG a bunch of different characters and storylines in a beautiful way. you´d add - ?

Although, GFIII was no match for the first two, and my least favorite, it still was a good movie. I would definitely choose Coppola (whether he'd do it or not is another story). He was really tuned in with the "feel" of the era. How many times we've learned on this board how accurate and authentic he was when it came to the smallest detail. Whether or not it has to do with his Italian roots, I don't know, but it worked. All I can say is his direction and keen eye totally enhanced the trilogy. He is the most logical choice to me, but we'll see.

Hi Chilltown!

I've not seen "Lost In Translation", but I do know Sofia has gotten much praise for it. I'd be open to her directing GFIV (like my opinion would count with the movie execs. ) Heck she'd have her father available if she needed assistance, so why not.

It sounds like Sofia was at the wrong end of the camera with acting. Directing seems to be her forte'.

TIS-
Lost In Translation was so amazing. The way it was directed and its script, just so cerebral. She wrote, directed, and produced the movie which is definitely impressive. In regards to GFIII, i am one of the few that was thoroughly satisfied with her performance. And from word i have received, Paramount Studios has her at number one on their list to direct, not FFC. I actually don't think they'd want him back, amazingly enough. Any theories on why that is?

Robert DeNiro

altough, Sofia Coppola might be nice too: a young, talented and critically acclaimed director who is as inside to The Godfather as DeNiro is (starred in the previous three)

Coppola always made it a family affair. Maybe Nicolas Cage (his nephew) could be in too. He has made a movie for Spike Jonze, Sofia's husband...now that I say that, Sofia probably arranged the deal for Spike and Nic... oh anyway, Nic's last picture was directed by Ridley Scott, hey could do it.

My personal favorites as directors are David Fincher, Bryan Singer, Chris Nolan; neo-noir directors.

But more obvious choices would be Martin Scorsese, David Chase (Sopranos) and Quentin Tarantino. Or Nora Ephron who used a lot of The Godfather in her romcom You've Got Mail. Harold Ramis spoofed The Godfather in Analyze This. Those two know the movie just as well as Tarantino or Scorsese probably do. Am I getting off track here?

I think Al Pacino should direct, who could do the film more justice than Mikey Corleone himself.

As much as I like Tarantino I think Scorsese would be a better choice. Even if FFC was going to do it I honestly don't think it would be that good because his heart probably wouldn't be in it like GF3(he said he didn't want to do it right? or am I mistaken ) Anyway theres my opinion.

I really think FFC's best days are behind him. Truthfully, with the exception of GFIII, he has struggled for nearly two decades for acclaim right? I think he's good as retired, bring on Sofia Coppola's Godfathe Part IV, i say!

well, kids may think of "Jack" as good, and he did make a decent lawyer-film called "The Rainmaker" with Matt Damon and Danny DeVito.

But Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) was a good movie, and I think most of his movies from the 1980's proved him right on some level. For one thing he has a nose for talent.

Yes his 'failures' from the eightties might have ruined his reputation, but after four of the best movies of the seventies, the guy has all the credit in the world.

I still sincerely hope he will put through Megalopolis but I doubt it will ever get to the big screen; he's been strugglign with it for over 15 years now, and there does not seem to be any progress in it. too bad, it sounded like a kick-ass project

Francis is however, producing Robert DeNiro's "The Good Shepherd" in 2004 (if DeNiro will do it still now that he is ill), as well as two other projects called On the Road and Kinsey both scheduled for 2004, the latter one starring Liam Neeson, Laura Linney and Chris O'Donnell.

Imdb.com says his Megalopolis is still in production, but I don't buy it. Unfortunately.

on a side note, however: Diane Lane is the most cast non-Godfather actress by Francis Coppola, starring in four of his movies! I post this because I know how much she is appreciated on this boards.

Mendes did Road to Perdition right? That was excellent. I'd be all for him. My list of choices would start with FFC for sure. But if Sofia Coppola is as good as ya'll say, then she should take a shot as well. To me Scorcese excells more at the modern mafia stuff, and although I wouldnt mind, since I wanna see more 20's and 30's stuff he wouldnt be my #1 choice.

Coppola has ended the contract he had with MGM and stopped production on Megalopolis, only to be involved with the three projects I mentioned now. I think Megalopolis is definitely off.

just a little trivia, when Charlie Bluhdorn, paramount's chairman at that time, asked Coppola to direct Part II, Coppola didn't want to do it and suggested Scorcese to direct it...PAramount gave Coppola control over production and the rest is history.

But can he direct is the question.

Al Pacino is my absoulute favorite actor and I support him on everything he does (even Gigli ) but i don't think he'll direct, or even if he can direct.

I think Pacino will be involved with 4 though. maybe we'll find out if he ever manages to go straight.

Trivia: FFC recommended Martin Scorcese to Charlie Bluhdorn (Paramoun Chairman) when he was asked to do GodFather II. FFC was so traumatized by his experience with The GodFather that he didn't want to do anything with it...Paramount gave him an offer he couldnt refuse (money and total control of the movie) and so the rest is history...

I think GF4 should be about how Vincent Mancini "Corleone" is nuthin' but a phony. He's not the bastard son of Santino Corleone.

I think GFIV would be good if Sonny's or Connie's kids went after Vincent for their birthright.

Whaddya think?

If GF IV were to take place in the '30s with the Five Families Wars, I'd go with Martin Scorcese all the way to the Oscar podium.

the idea of it being in the 20's and 30's is good but not by scorsese they should just have FFC do it

I just had a thought- how about Brett Ratner? He directed Red Dragon and the Rush Hour movies. It might sound like a choice out of left field, but not for me because... he's my cousin and then MAYBE I could use my influence with him to fulfill one of my dreams... to be in The Godfather Part IV!!! Hell, I'd get you guys in it too, if you wanted...

It would have to be Scorcesse, he is the only other director who could deal with story of such historical signifacance, and he is the only one who could impose his will ie. Coppola w/ GF I.

The best thing to do is to have FFCoppola direct the flashback half of the movie and have someone like a Quentin Terentino do the "present" day part...

Sophia Coppola as she has a clear vision like her father and The Godfather films crew is like a family.

If FFC will not do it, there leaves several potential options:

Sophia Coppola is out because although talented, it seems obvious that she doesn't have the right type of vision for a Godfather film. Spike Jonz is her husband? Him-- never!

Al Pacino would be a great choice, because he basically is the trilogy. He is The Godfather. His vision would undoubtebly be excellent.

George Lucas would be an interesting choice because he is arguably the closest with work basics to FFC as anyone. Remember back before Star Wars they owned a company together. He could definatly bring an epic vision of scope to The Godfather.

Steven Spielberg is a master director. With films like Schindler's List, he has proven a master storyteller all around. Not on anyone's potential list, but I'd add him.

Brian DePalma is out. So is Quentin Tarantino. Scarface was good; Pulp Fiction was far too strange. Neither have the right vision for a Godfather film, however. Even Scarface falls in shame before the Godfather.

Martin Scorsese is the obvious #1 choice. He is an excellent teller of mob stories, and the greatest mob filmmaker next to FFC. Goodfellas is of the same vision as The Godfather.

My choices would be as follows:

1. Martin Scorsese
2. George Lucas
3. Steven Spielberg

All of course if FFC doesn't do it.

sofia directed lost in translation really well...but i dont think she has a good insight of all the characters and the films...if she did, i think she would have acted better. she didnt even want to play mary remember. i think talia would give a good shot at it...i saw the film that she directed and it was done well...she understood the characters..and i know she does know the gf ones really well and helped decide the whole kay abortion thing...she would be good.
