ahhhhhhh i fooled you all with the title. lol. anyways, what if the godfather 3 had won best picture at the oscars and best director and so on? would every so called godfather fan still dislike it? i have a theory that most people in here follow what critics have to say. gf3 really wasn't the horrible movie everyone says it was. it's still much better then it's rival goodfellas. yet goodfellas is held in such high esteem.

goodfellas is easier to understand for the younger audience such as myself..

Except it DIDN'T win all those Oscars. And even though it received several nominations, I STILL didn't like it.

As for following what the 'critics have to say...', there are several critics AND members of this board who have proclaimed it to be an excellent film though not on par with GF and GFII.

I STILL didn't like it.

And I've seen Goodfellas too - in the theaters during its original release. It is a FAR better film than GFIII. I predicted to my friend as we were leaving that Joe Pesci would win an Oscar. Only sad thing about that was that even though he deserved it, he had to beat out Al Pacino for Dick Tracy Without Pesci in the running, Pacino would've won.

That year, 1990, was probably the strongest year in movies within the past 20 years. Any movie nominated for best picture could have conceivebly won. Dances With Wolves, though, stood out for its originality, whereas Goodfellas and Godfather Part III pretty much cancelled each other out due to the type of movie. If you don't believe that reasoning, check out Oscar winner history. It happens all the time.

*other notes from that years oscars:
Talia Shire and Diane Keaton were both submitted for Best Actress, neither nominated. Cancelled each other out? possibly. but an argument could be made that both could have been better in Supporting Actress Category. NoOne was beating Kathy Bates that year, nor should they. she was awesome in misery, plain and simple.

Bridget Fonda was submitted for Supporting Actress and Franc D'Ambrosio for S. Actor. Neither had a strong chance. interesting at the time that the producers of Dick Tracy sent out many submissions for the supporting categories including Madonna, of course Al Pacino, and Dustin Hoffman in hopes of getting as many nominations in acting categories possible. that backfired and they only got One nom and one major win for Madonna.

Pacino SHOULD have WON let alone be NOMINATED!!! But it was one of those rare times where everyone assumes he is a lock, so no one bothers voting for him.

hey mike hold on there, i didn't trash goodfellas. in fact it's one of my favourites. but it is definatly not better then godfather 3. goodfellas was a more straight forward story while the gf3 had more twists, per say. mike i think you are to quick with your temper. examine what i wrote and you'll see i didn't trash goodfellas. the gf3 has more of a epic feel. has more of an emotional feeling.

Goodfellas is a good movie. No doubt. But its overlength hurt it majorly as well as the fact that it is heavily cliched.

i agree totally, it has a comic touch to it which makes you want to watch it again but at the same time it is a cliche because of lines, 'like ever since i can remember i wanted to be a gangster'.

To say this is simply a matter of opinion is the understatement of the century. To each his own, everyone.
i personally think GF III is much better than Goodfellas. I enjoyed Goodfellas, thoroughly, but i despised the ending sequence as i found it quite dreadful. this is where i always have problems with Scorcese- in all of his movies he has some 'thing' that some people will either love or hate. i find that to be quite a boring way of encourageing dialog about one's film.
GFIII was a completely different movie than GFEllas because it was more psychological. it might have been less 'fun' to watch but not less interesting at all.
In regards to whomever made the comment of Pacino not being in it, i think you have something there but not on a literal level. they didn't have A
'pacino' because ray liotta is no al pacino. sure Pesci won an Oscar, but it wasn't a historical character by any stretch of the imagination nor were Deniros or Liottas.
Just my two cents...

you know i see al pacino not in that but maybe have had him in a remake of the odd couple. him and de niro. i would pay to see that i can just see de niro as the neat freak felix and pacino as the grouchy oscar. lol only dreams

Pacino, is twice the actor de niro is (and de niro is a great actor) so why be in a gangster film like goodfellas when he is the star in the ultimate series of gangster film, anything else would be lowering his standards

Goodfellas was ten Times the Movie that Godfather Part III Was.

goodfellas has way more violence, swearing, and all of the good stuff. it was hard for me to sit through the godfather. i couldn't even stand sitting through the 2nd. you know what i did? i didn't watch it.

anyone is allowed to have his own opinion, but the most of the people who say "I didn't like GF3" are being brainwashed by the media and the press. people usually don't like what's new, they want to stay loving what was made in the 1970's an don't accept something new.
but I'm not saying EVERYBODY who didn't like GF3 is like this. everyone has the right to love or hate anything...I just feel that it's like a cliche to say "GF3 sucks", and all that stuff.
talking about oscar nomination, I believe neither Talia Shire and Diane Keaton deserved one in 1990.

-Goodfellas is from 1990??-

Yep, Goodfellas is From 1990.

Talia Shire Had A Good Role. Becoming the Lady Macbeath was one of the Few things I liked about the Godfather Part III.

But Brainwashed how. Not all the press trashed this film

yes, not ALL the press, but the movie didn't have a good relationship with the critics.

and like I said, not everyone who doesn't like GF3 is brainwashed
