No we are not allowed to have Phones in our cars. people still bring them like put them in trunks, Just becasue there is a ban doesnt mean ppl dont bring phones to school. I am only 17 years old. Plus you nedd phones b/c if you get into a wreck how are you going to tell you parents or if you are in some club and it gets canceled whos goin to take you home if you dont have a car. the ban has messed up ppls grades too.

I didn't really avoid your statement, I just didn't specifically address it becuase it's irrelevant. Again, if only parents keeping in touch with their children were the only purpose and function of a cellphone...it is not.

I re-read the article you posted just to see if there was also something mentioning a ban during school trips - there was none. I did see where some students leave their phone at a designated point for which there is a fee.

I also read that this ban has been in place since the late 1980's, when either Koch or Dinkins would've been in office. The current Mayor/School Chancellor are simply enforcing it.

I'll repeat that the ban is justified, and I hope that the Mayor and Chancellor don't buckle.

If the kids want to use the cell's for an emergency purpose only fine let them do that. But it is wrong for them to be texting each other just to make the day go by easier or just to shoot the breeze they can do that when school is over. Turn the thing off and leave it in your bookbag. Is that so much to ask

BTW what is a School Chancellor? Is that something like a school superintindent?

the ban is not right. When my grandfather died(RIP) i got a text from my mother telling me in school i read it. i went to the office to check myself out. They asked me how i got the infomation i told them i got a text message from my mother and told me i got suspended for 3 days. IT was the dumbest thing i never use my phone during school and it was a family crisis and i got suspened and i missed two test that i got zeros on. They should change the rule for family crisis only, But i didnt deserve it

That's an unfortunate thing, and I'm sorry for that. But AGAIN...even in the case of a family emergency, the school can be called.

I do feel the school should have cut you some slack, though.

It was wrong that you got suspended for that But why didn't your mom just call the school and let them know? You wouldn't have gotten suspended.

Yes the school brought that point that my mom should hvave called the school. But i mean my grandmother is was going crazy she needed to get in touch with me and she didnt know where to look for the number. Back to the point i am watching someone text someone esle rite now and i am all the way againsit it but the ban isn't goin to stop anything just try to make smaller. Its not doing anything but making us students better at breaking the rules.

I think Don Cardi has made some very fair and decent points. Obviously, a ban on cell phones isn't gonna stop kids from bringing them. So if they are gonna allow them, some rules and guidelines need to be implemented and executed.

My whole problem with the "cell phones in school" issue is the fact that kids don't bring their cell phones to school for emergencies. Kids use them to cheat on tests, and the phones are a more convenient means of passing notes.

I think the kids should be FORCED to leave their phones in their lockers or in their cars when they arrive to school. In the event of an emergency (be it a terrorist attack or a school shooting), I'm sure the teachers and staff will have their cell phones readily available.

i have never cheated on a test using cell phones, aournd here we use cheat sheets or we right the answers on the blank sheet of paper that we get out for text. Cell phones are used around here to talk to eachother during class from class to class.

If only hova4ever9 were able to DELETE those 2 extra identical posts he accidentally added as do we all at one time or another.

But alas...we must wait for a moderator to do that.

In any case,
1) a parent should ALWAYS have the number of their child's school handy, no matter where; if they do not (and there have been times when I foolishly did not), there's something one can dial called 'Information'

2) If bans like this are making students 'better at breaking the rules', then they must also make the schools better at disciplining those who break them.

I think you hit the nail right on the head with that one. That's the main issue here, the severe lack of discipline.

I am againist the cell phone texting for "jus talking purposes" The school are never going to outsmart us. We have 3000 students in our school and like 200 teachers tehy can't catch 1/3 of the kids doin it. I see it all the time but I am not going to rat a kid out. They aren't going to hire more ppl to watch the kids to see if they use the phones.

I have my son's school # on my fridge, on my cell phone, and on a piece of paper by each phone in the house. Just in case of an emergency.

becasue he is really young I am 17. Cell phones arent a problem when you are that young. Most mothers do know ther kids school number when they are at that age but when your older i dont see a point to know the kids school number wehn they about about to graduate.

Then you are obviously not yet a parent.

If I am correct, those 'about to graduate' are still under the legal adult age, and therefore fall under the responsibility of their parents.

A parent should know the number of the school whether the child is 7 or 17.

I know you don't mean disrespect and neither do I. But if when your grandmother died your mother had not had access to the convenience of 'text messaging', she would've HAD to have reached you via calling the school. Someone would've been sent to your classroom to come get you and you would STILL have eventually ended up in the Principal's office, only to receive the bad news instead of having to give it and in turn be asked how you got it.

What exactly is the problem with students having cell phones in school as long as they don't use them during class?

I don't understand why this should even be an issue.

Under what circumstances does anyone from your school ever have the right to search your car?

hova4ever9...I'm curious about something.

You just mentioned in a post that you saw someone using their cellphone and that it's 'rude' to the teacher. In an earlier post, you also mentioned that you could see someone 'text-messaging' someone else.

Are you seeing these things happen in class? And if so, would you mind at all letting us know how you are communicating with us on the Gangster BB?

Thanks,
Apple

I don't understand why this should even be an issue.

Its an issue because kids do use them in school, and many use them during class.

The other day, my little sister (13 years old) sent me one of those annoying "forward this to 10 people" text messages while she was in class.

Some may say "Well just because your little sister does it doesn't mean everyone else does." True, but I assure you this incident isn't an "isolated incident."

It wouldn't be an issue if kids weren't using them in class. But they are.

Oh, ok...so at 2:12pm, EST you were in a computer class where you could do whatever you wanted, and approx an hour and a half later you were communicating with us from study hall, where (if I recall from MY school days) you can also do w/e you want...yet in both places you didn't consider it right for fellow students to either talking or text-messaging on a cellphone?

Yet you feel a ban is unfair?

Thanks,
Apple
