The battle for the waterfront between Ioele and the Irish White Hand, led first by Wild Bill Lovett, then Pegleg Lonergan, raged through much of Carroll Gardens and downtown Brooklyn. The Adonis Club massacre occurred near the intersection of 20th St and 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn, when Ioele, with Snarky Capone's help, took out Lonergan and wrested control of the Brooklyn waterfront away from the Irish. In 2005, My old man and I took a ride over to Borough Park where Ioele was gunned down in his bullet proof limo with non bullet proof glass. Another interesting character is Ioele's main enforcer, Two Knife Willie Altieri, who fades away into history after Ioele's demise.

Yes. Brooklyn was named for a town in Holland called Breukelen, or "broken land," because both had the same rocky soil (also "marsh"). I spent some of my youngest years in the East New York section of Brooklyn, which had many Dutch reminders, including Van Siclen Avenue, the elevated subway stop that I used. A Dutch Reformed Church on New Lots Avenue has the city's second-oldest graveyard, with headstones of the original Dutch settlers from the 17th Century, like Van Siclen and Van Sinderin.

Willie "Two-Knife" Altieri, (4 Mar 1891- Oct 1970?) was a New York gangster who served as the chief enforcer for Frankie Yale's Italian-American "Black-Hand" gang, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in 1920's New York City. He got his nickname after his preferred method of dispatching a victim. Willie had killed dozens of rival gangsters during the 1920s and was considered an important figure in the "Black-Hand" gang.

Criminal Career

Mob boss Yale used Altieri on many occasions to commit murders. In 1919, Yale sent Altierri to silence an informer within the gang. Altierri stabbed the informer in the torso with both knives, then broke off blades in the victim's body. Altierri later presented the handles to Yale, who mounted them on a plaque and hung it up in his office.

On October 31, 1923, Altieri achieved his most notorious kill with the murder of Wild Bill Lovett. Lovett was the former leader of the Irish-American White Hand Gang, Yale's deadliest rivals in New York. Lovett had retired to New Jersey, but still enjoyed visiting the old neighborhood in Brooklyn. On one such visit, Lovett went to the Lotus Club, got drunk, and passed out on a bench. A little later in the evening, Altieri happened to run into Antonio Maglioli, a friend who worked in the club. Maglioli told Altieri about Lovett, who was hated by the Black Hand gang. Altieri then went with fellow gang members Vincent Mangano and Johnny "Silk Stocking" Giustra to the Lotus Club and started shooting at Lovett. Lovett arose immediately and started fighting with his attackers. At that point, Altieri grabbed a meat cleaver and buried it in Lovett's skull, killing him.

At one point, Altieri himself narrowly missed being assassinated. The White Hand gang tried to kill Altieri because they suspected he was responsible for killing gang member Petey Behan. However, the White Hand hitmen accidentally killed Angelo Gibaldi, the father of Vincenzo Gibaldi. Vincenzo Gibaldi later became famous as a Capone Gunman and a chief organizer of the Saint Valentine's Day massacre by another name, Jack "Machine Gun Jack" McGurn. In retaliation, Gibaldi with Frankie Yale's consent killed the three hitmen responsible and thus avenged his father's death.

Yale Murder

On July 1, 1928, Yale was murdered on the streets of Brooklyn. His killing was reportedly due to a falling out with Chicago mob boss Al Capone, Yale's former underling. After Yale's murder, Altieri slipped into obscurity.

Very little is known as to the whereabouts of Willie "Two-Knife" Altieri after the murder of Frankie Yale in 1928.

On a side note regarding Jack McGurn's father being murdered by Lovett's White Hand Gang is questionable, as well as Lovett being murdered in retaliation although I have found more than one version independently corroborating this version.
