According to Giancana's long time mistress Phillys McGuire, during one of their love trips around Italy, Giancana refused to go to Sicily but she didnt know why? What do you think on why Giancana didnt want to go to Sicily? This was during the early or mid 1960s....so was it because of McGuire's safety or because of his own? Giancana was Chicago boss at the time and was Sicilian, although he was completely Americanized and barely understood Italian. Whats your opinion?

I doubt that a famous singer like the Mcguire eould follow Giancana in Sicily and why Giancana should go to Sicily? Could easly stay in Mexico or in other american big city but remaining in Chicago eas a threat for the mobsters.

I think this was before Mexico or during the time when Giancana was still in Chicago and was still the boss...also, I think it was McGuire's idea to visit Sicily but the boss refused, and so instead they went only to Rome and Milano.

This reminds me of another example when Alex wanted to go to Napoli and Ricca told him that he will arrange for Alex not to have any problems over there, obviously because Ricca was an old Camorrista and still had connected family in that same city, while Alex was already a known mobster.

The first Mafia war started in 1962, I can imagine it would be dangerous to go to Palermo.
The First Mafia War was the first high-profile conflict between Mafia clans in post-war Italy. In 1962, mafia boss Cesare Manzella organized a drug shipment to the United States with the help of two Sicilian clans, the Grecos and the La Barberas.
After a stay in the United States, where he had spent many years organising gambling houses in Chicago, Manzella settled back in Cinisi after he was expelled by US authorities in 1947.
Manzella sided with the Grecos and became the target of the rival faction. Manzella was killed on April 26, 1963, when he was blown to pieces by a car bomb.Pieces of Manzella's body were found stuck to lemon trees hundreds of meters from the crater where the car had been.

On January 17, 1963, Salvatore La Barbera disappeared and was never heard of again. Angelo La Barbera also disappeared, but two weeks later he reappeared in Milan, in the north of Italy, giving a press conference. The involvement of the media in Mafia affairs was unheard of at the time.

Thanks a lot @H. That was probably the main reason for which Giancana avoided Sicily at the time.

That reminds me of Santo Sorge a Sicilian Mafioso living in the United States. His exact role has never been very clear; he was one of the great 'unknowns' of the Sicilian and American Mafia. He was one of the highest-level Sicilian Mafia leaders in his time. His counsel was sought in important decisions affecting the American Mafia as well. He traveled extensively between Italy and the United States.
