None of these fellas today....NONE of them, could ever hold a candle to the way wiseguys dressed from yesteryear. Especially guys from New York City! It's not even a contest. These guys today look like they get dressed in the dark. Lol....They don't know what the fuck they're doing....NO style. NO sense of fashion.....Pleeeez! They couldn't even carry the old-timers jock straps.
Hickey Freeman, Sulka, Saks Fifth Avenue, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Mario Valente, F.R. Tripler & Co., etc.....THESE were suits. These were manufacturers...expensive and classy! Guys looked like a million-dollars....as they strolled into places like the Copacabana, The Pygmalian and The Stork Club.
90% of the guys "on the streets" today, never even heard of these manufacturers names, let alone ever bought themselves one of their suits.
What guys spent, years ago, on their shoes and silk socks alone, these jerk-offs today don't spend, couldn't spend, wouldn't even know HOW to spend, that kinda money on their entire outfits...even if they had it. Lol
Guys like John (Johnny Dio) Diogaurdi, Vincenzo (Jimmy Doyle) Plumeri, Gaetano (Tommy Brown) Lucchese, Francesco (Frank Costello) Castiglia, Giuseppe (Joe Adonis) Doto, John (Big John) Ormento, Joseph (Joe Beck) DiPalermo, Louis (Louie Dome) Pacella, etc. etc. etc., etc....
Like I said, it ain't even a contest!
THOSE were sharp dressers. Not these guys....Nowadays, they look like half-a-stumblebums. Even WHEN they're in suits and ties.
The suits they wear look like they came off the "5 & 10 cent" rack.

I think the gangsters from the 1920s through the 40s dressed the best as far as the American Mafia is concerned. Maybe even 1960s, but after that it kinda went downhill. There were still some dapper gents, don't get me wrong, but the era I mentioned beats them all. IMO, whether it was 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980....on up...The old-timers....the REAL wiseguys, who cut their teeth and made the mob - "THE MOB" - were the ones who set the standard of dress. And you didn't have to be a boss or have a million dollars to dress like like a boss or look like a million dollars. Lol The fact of the matter is, whether you were a so-called associate, soldier, captain, underboss, consigliere or Family boss. If you had some class and knew what was what, were successful in "The Life," had some money and some taste, you dressed the part and wore the best....and looked like exactly what you were...a fucking wiseguy!....and you dressed to the nines! THAT was the goal for 99.9999% of street guys who grew up in poverty and strived for something better in life....and went into "the life." Because it was also considered a sign of "success."

Everybody, not just Mob bosses, dressed better in thr Fifties and earlier. Unless you were a manual worker, you wore a suit, hat and tie to work. Mob guys dressed to the hilt to "fit in" with "legitimate" people and to show "class," which meant something in those days. And, the only men who wore track suits were track runners.

Yep they would fit in now in a suit you would be often overdressed in a crowd and stand out you don't want that as a criminal lol. Casual expensive designer clothes are now more common dresscode, unless you go to court or official meetings.

Exactly Turnbull....that is very true. Because it was indicative of society and the times back then. If you look at even regular Joe's back then, it was quite typical to dress in a pair of slacks, white button down shirt, a tie, and quite often a sports jacket or a suit too (depending upon your daily vocation and schedule.) And wiseguys? Like I said in my earlier posts, they were next level all together...and were usually dressed to the hilt. Not even so much that they wanted to "fit in" with legitimate people, but because most people back then were poor, especially street guys, who generally came from a poorer background. Dressing to the nines and dressing flashy, with diamond pinky rings and diamond encrusted gold watches, silk shirts and ties, expensive suits, etc....well that was a clear sign that you had money, and plenty of it. For the average wiseguy...it was also showing the world around him that HE had made it! That was very important to most guys. To show that they were very successful. So much so, that they had money to burn. So, subsequently, being able to dress sharp as a razor and being able to flash a fat wad of cash around, enough to choke a horse, that was key!

NYM - I agree with everything you said and I think most people in these forums would agree, but the question was asking about todays Bosses/Made guys, not if todays dressers can compare to the old school guys. I’m no expert on their dress, but I saw some photos of Mancuso looking like he was dressed to go to the old timers home and play the “keep the balloon up” game. But in Ralphies photo at the top of this topic, he does look like a big time boss should look. You are very knowledgeable about all the current bosses and administrations, does anyone jump out to you as a sharp dresser? In todays LCN, not comparing them to the old guard.

In my hometown here in AZ, "formal wear" means a clean T-shirt. When women wear sleeveless dresses here, you get a big display of tattoos. @Turnbull I really respect your days since I think Im much younger then you, meaning I think you'll understand what Im about to say next. I was around 16 years old (1999/2000) when I got my first tattoos and they were made with a stolen stash from a real tattoo studio. In those days there were still several groups of people who were usually known regarding tattoos, such as military people, sailors, prisoners, gangsters, hookers, rockers and ravers, and so-called "neighborhood troublemakers" such as myself at the time lol. Right now, or according to my summer trips for the last 10 or maybe even 15 years, i can see that everyone has tattoos all over their bodies, and its a matter of time when new born babies are going to be able to get tattooed, if you know what Im saying here?! So since my older brother is a known plastic surgeon, Ive decided to remove all of my tattoos (three on my back) with a laser treatment, obviously because theres no more point in it and Im embarrassed, meaning I always wanted to stay away from the general population and so this is my next move lol.

Very much the same in the US, TD. Years ago, most of the ink you'd see was on military veterans (usually on one arm), and the assumption was that they got the tatts while drunk and on leave. As they got older, they tried to hide their ink by wearing long sleeved shirts all the time. By mid-70s, tatts were getting very common on men, and by '80, you'd see some women at the beach or pool with a little flower or heart on shoulder or ankle. Today, 32% of all Americans have tatts.
