'Ndrangheta in Imperia, 27 arrests for mafia and drug trafficking. Two minors also in prison: "They had important positions in the group"
by FQ | NOVEMBER 13, 2023
Since dawn on Monday, men from the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza have carried out a precautionary custody order against 27 people for drug trafficking and mafia-style criminal association . The provision was issued by the investigating judge as part of an investigation coordinated first by the Imperia Prosecutor's Office and then by the Genoa Anti-Mafia District Directorate : 24 arrested people were placed in prison, while the remaining three were placed under house arrest. Seventeen of the suspects – we read in a note signed by the Genoa prosecutor, Nicola Piacente – are accused of being members of a criminal association directed by members of the De Marte-Gioffrè ' Ndrangheta family : the group originates from Seminara (Reggio Calabria) and connected to 'ndrangheta articulations resident in Calabria, but for years rooted in the Diano Marina area (Imperia). According to investigators, the organization has been operating in the province of Imperia since 2020 and deals with the purchase, cultivation, transport, resale and transfer of cocaine, hashish and marijuana.
The investigations have reconstructed how the group had various homes used for meetings and negotiations with drug suppliers and buyers, cryptophones for communications and for the delivery of money and a gun: the suspects are accused of 56 episodes of purchase, sale, transport of quantities of cocaine and marijuana and cultivation of marijuana. The narcotic, it appears, was also transported on buses on the Reggio Calabria-Ventimiglia route . Among the alleged crimes - all aggravated by the mafia method - are also injuries, thefts, extortion and threats against buyers to force them to repay their debts. The interceptions and shadowing conducted by the Financial Police revealed that the boss Domenico Gioffré , "despite being restricted to house arrest, together with Giovanni De Marte and other members of the De Marte family", had managed "to give life to a thriving business of drug trafficking in the province of Imperia, thanks to direct supplies from the Gioia Tauro plain, making use of privileged channels adjacent to the 'ndrangheta". The operational and decision-making center of the association was the residence of the De Marte family in Diano Castello.
Among those arrested there are also two boys, minors at the time of the disputed facts, for whom prison was ordered at the request of the Genoa prosecutor for minors Tiziana Paolillo . In a note, the magistrate explains how the investigations revealed that the two, "despite their young age, were inserted with stability, very specific roles and important positions within the association, of which they knew the aims and methods attributable to the mafia organizations.

By arresting the leaders of the gang, with the "Garden" investigation, the financiers of the Economic and Financial Police Unit at the DDA believe they have decapitated the Borghetto-Latella gang which was historically federated to the Libri mafia family while in recent years it is in fact a more autonomous group that controls the Modena and Ciccarello districts, in the southern area of ??Reggio Calabria.
Part of the investigation concerns the relationships between the 'ndrangheta and the Roma (Gypsy) community of Ciccarello which, according to the investigators, is no longer laborers at the service of the clans but, as in other territories of Calabria, is transforming into a real gang.

THE INVESTIGATION
This is how the 'Ndrangheta took over Germany
Since the Duisburg massacre, Calabrian organized crime has been "underestimated". Today, the Germans say mea culpa

Published on: 11/16/2023 – 6:51 am
of Paris Leporace

LAMEZIA TERME October 2023. A postal delivery van travels on a road around Duisburg, up north in Germany . The vehicle hits an old lady's car. The police are in the area and intervened in the accident. Before starting the bureaucratic investigations, the documents are obtained.
The courier is an Italian. A Calabrian, Antonio Strangio , 44 ??years old, from San Luca. Even a traffic policeman would have suspicions in those parts. Time to enter the data and the response arrives. Antonio Strangio is a fugitive wanted for a conviction for cocaine trafficking . He didn't even use false names or documents. But San Lucoto's criminal record is quite as copious as a 'Ndrangheta copycat . They call him " u meccanicu ", Antonio, for his passion for cars, photographed by Italian investigators on the street of Polsi on the days of the celebration, but above all indicated as the failed victim of the Duisburg massacre . The mechanic, now a courier, worked as a pizza chef in the European place that revealed the 'Ndrangheta to Europe, "Da Bruno". They included that massacre of six people killed in the series "Gomorrah" even if the screenwriters preferred to move the location of the massacre to Cologne. Instead, everything happened in Duisburg on August 15th 2007 , over fifteen years ago.

duisburg
German investigators at the site of the Duisburg massacre
Antonio Strangio, for reasons of duty or for astral luck or for lack of role in the affiliation that takes place in that pizzeria, left early, that bloody mid-August that leaves six Calabrians dead in the heart of steelmaking Germany. In the search after the massacre, 280 357 magnum cartridges were found in Antonio's locker. And since that mid-August holiday "u meccanicu" continues to go back and forth between San Luca and Germany.
The massacre that revealed to the Germans the penetration of the 'Ndrangheta into Germany was a watershed moment. He will write the report of the Anti -Mafia Parliamentary Commission of the and archaic." But the steel and industrial world of the Ruhr does not have the legal tools to understand the post-modern syncretism of a mafia that has become something else. Only 8 months after the massacre, the German judiciary denied the seizure of the "Da Bruno" pizzeria, two other restaurants and two apartments in Kaarst, a city very close to Duisburg. The properties are registered in the name of people not involved in the investigation, the German guarantee system does not provide for emergency exceptions.
Traces of the presence of the 'ndrangheta in those parts had been reported well before the massacre. In an old ordinance it is written that the proceeds of the San Luca drug trafficking had been invested "in properties and public businesses in Duisburg". Gratteri, who coordinated the investigation into the massacre, had wiretaps sent to the German investigators that raised a serious alarm, but his Teutonic colleagues did not have the tools to intervene . A ROS report already in 1999 had reported the "Da Bruno" restaurant and in that same year, two protagonists of the feud, Santo Vottari and Francesco Pelle , were stopped in France while traveling in a BMW. Before the arrival of the Euro, three hundred million lire and one million French francs were found in the back of a seat. They were headed for Duisburg . A place like any other for French policemen.

The 'Ndrangheta in Germany
Petra Reski has had many problems reporting on the 'Ndrangheta in Germany, facing defamation trials, and has sometimes been forced to have suspicious names removed from her publications. In an interview, Petra, you said: " There are thousands of cases of, let's call them pizza chefs, who come to work in Germany with a monthly income of 800 euros and perhaps buy themselves a hotel, or entire streets. " After the Duisburg massacre, judicial controversies and police reports targeted the prestigious Landhaus Milser Hotel which had hosted the Italian national football team which won the World Cup in 2006. The owner is called Antonio Pelle and is from San Luca, with no criminal record, he wrote also a book on his story of suspicions after the massacre to tell the story of the condition of those who carry with them a surname and a toponym that leaves no German or Italian investigator neutral. The presentation of the book in San Luca was also attended by Don Pino Strangio , rector of the Polsi Sanctuary for decades, and Rosy Canale who later ended up under the hammer of sensational judicial investigations after having represented the good side of the "mother" town of the 'Ndrangheta. Germany is a nation that does not have the crime of mafia association, affiliates only find problems with international arrest warrants .

The Duisburg massacre
Not just Duisburg
In 2019, the German government identified 314 'Ndrangheta men while today an estimated thousand are distributed in 20 premises across the entire federal territory . A journalistic investigation by Faz writes that since 2007 a control room composed of 9 bosses of the major gangs has been operating, which would be called " German Crime ". The penetration model is very similar to that recorded for the colonization of Northern Italy. Colonies of emigrants in the 1950s brought the first avant-gardes, today young affiliates continue to arrive. The emerging scholar Anna Sergi explains : " The young 'ndrangheta, even those who arrive in Germany, undergo a sort of indoctrination comparable to terrorist brainwashing ."

It's all about easy money. « I'll give you 5,000-10,000 euros and tell you go and become a partner of your cousin who has a pizzeria in Germany. You go because you can do something in Germany. It's the idea that you can make easy money and you deserve to have a good life ." In this way Calabrian emigration fuels the turnover of picciotti and sgarristi. However, something is starting to change, in fact it is recorded that for the first time a conviction by a German court has cited the 'Ndrangheta , in relation to the crimes committed by Salvatore Giorgi , a waiter, in a restaurant on Lake Constance, which is was sentenced to three years and six months for drug trafficking and money laundering. An ice cream parlor was recently discovered in Siegen which would have had a double function: laundering money from drug trafficking and acting as a support point for young 'Ndrangheta supporters who came to Germany to learn the language and integrate into the criminal environment . This time too the other terminal was in San Luca. But Calabrian mafia penetration also comes from the Crotone area, from Sibaritide, from other places in Reggino. According to Professor Antonio Nicaso , Gratteri's close writing collaborator, «Germany is the country where there is the greatest presence of the 'Ndrangheta in the world. They managed to clone the Calabrian mafia geography, surpassing the USA, Canada and Australia in terms of infiltration. The most important families of the 'Ndrangheta are all present."
In the 1990s, in an investigation by Il Messaggero, Gianfranco Manfredi told of a Calabrian in Stuttgart, Mario Lavorato , a straw man for the Farao-Marincola and financier of a German CDU politician. The Calabrian will be acquitted . His name crops up again in 2017 when he accompanies the mayor of Offenbach and his collaborators on a tour between Mandatoriccio and Cirò for investments in suspicious properties. The repentant Gaetano Aloe defines him as "the gang leader" and said in a statement: «In Germany he owns several restaurants and in Calabria a village, he developed these activities with the Faraos who benefit from them as if they were the owners. I know this personally because once I, Cenzo Farao, son of Giuseppe, my Spanish brother-in-law, went to Stuttgart."
Meanwhile, something is changing in Germany. This is certified by Enzo Ciconte , one of the first scholars of the phenomenon who after the Eureka operation last May wrote in Domani: " Now even the Germans are making mea culpa about the German 'Ndrangheta ". The game is still at the beginning. (redazione@corrierecal.it)

(The statements of the scholar Anna Sergi reported in the article are taken from an interview conducted by the journalist Cristina Giordano for the Comso Italiano podcast of the German public broadcaster WDR / Cosmo, in the episode broadcast on 11 August 2023 and entitled « The 'ndrangheta in Germany 2 – The gangs and German justice". "The Casamonicas are no longer here, let's take the Cesano square." The ambitions of the 'ndrina in Rome
From Rome to Sicily, from North to South. The ambitions and affairs of the men of the Borghetto-Latella gang

"Whoever has drugs in Rome does what he wants and the Calabrians always have drugs", a sentence, that of a justice collaborator contained in the VI and VII report 'Mafias in Lazio', which well describes the strength of the 'ndrine in Capital and, above all, still underlines the quality of the goods they deal with. That summary, although from 2016, is still very relevant. This is illustrated by the operations which reveal the affairs of the 'Ndrangheta in Rome and which, recently, made it possible to defeat the leaders of the group in Reggio Calabria which managed the drug dealing in Rome for the Borghetto-Latella gang.

In the operation that led to the arrest of 27 people, the district anti-mafia directorate and the financial police reconstructed how the gang of Serie A drug dealers intended to take possession of a drug dealing place left vacant by the Casamonicas, because they had been arrested.

The Cesano area

The area is that of Cesano, close to the area where the Vatican Radio antennas once stood. According to the DDA, the right man to grab the Roman market would have been 53-year-old Armando Catanzariti, a true Calabrian who has now moved with his family to Trevignano Romano for years. With 'Catanza', as he calls himself, Antonio Idotta also ended up in prison in the financial blitz - among others. The 52-year-old who was instead responsible for hiding and transporting the drugs from Calabria to the province of Rome, and then dealing them in the capital.

The two men of the Borghetto-Latella gang, on the other hand, had sensed the big coup as also emerges from the interceptions: "There is no one there. There is a large square in Cesano, near the old Vatican Radio antennas. There are the Albanians but they have cheap stuff", said Catanzariti praising the quality of the cocaine from the 'Ndrangheta.

The Roman mission

The conversation dates back to 2021. Idotta and Catanzariti worked for a drug transport between May and June of that year. Trips which, according to those who investigated, were repeated, each containing hundreds of grams of cocaine.

The two converse continuously, so much so that Idotta proposes to Catanzariti to hide the drugs to take to Rome by car or bus, always with an eye on who would have to "take the goods" from Calabria to Rome: "I belong to the Africoti I don't trust them", Catanzariti's thoughts.

Quality matters

The objective, in any case, is clear: to take the square left "empty" after the operations of the police and force the pushers to sell their stuff, the quality stuff.

"There is none of these people here, among the Albanians and Romanians, who have good stuff. They all bring it Nino, but the one I brought here isn't there. No one who can compete. There are only things of second choice", explains Catanzariti who is focusing on Cesano: "If we manage to take the place there will be no one. The only ones are in custody, there is a guy with the Casamonicas. But the Casamonicas are all salty (arrested ed.), they are not there, there is no one left, so the square has remained with the Albanians". According to those who investigated, the objective was to build a monopoly. The leitmotif, moreover, is always the same: "Whoever has drugs in Rome does what he wants and the Calabrians always have drugs".

The 'strange' murder of the doctor: she was returning home with her husband. Ndrangheta style ambush
A currently inexplicable crime that of 67-year-old Francesca Romeo in Calabria. Her husband, who is a psychiatrist, was also injured. According to the investigators' initial findings, she was the target.
By Biagio Chiariello

[Linked Image]

The community of Sant'Anna di Seminara is clearly in shock over what happened this morning, Saturday 18 November: Doctor Francesca Romeo was killed and her husband Antonio Napoli was injured. Everyone is speechless in the small agricultural center where the doctor from the medical guard of Santa Cristina in Aspromonte , in Reggio Calabria, was born and lived with her spouse, a psychiatrist.

A crime that is currently inexplicable - "strange" as one investigator defines it - that of the 67-year-old. Anyone who knows a husband and wife who had no children speaks of respectable , reserved people .

From the reconstruction of the investigators of the Taurianova police station , the killers, it seems at least two, knew the car and knew that the couple of doctors were returning home after finishing their shift : they waited for the victim to negotiate a sharp bend on the provincial road to come out into the open and riddle the car in which Francesca Romeo was traveling with her husband with a rifle.

I read in certain instances where the bosses actually ordered men to turn and say what the government wants to hear.

Colombia captures Italian alleged member of the 'ndrangheta mafia
BY ASSOCIATED PRESS
ASSOCIATED PRESS
NOV. 30, 2023 9:26 AM PT
BOGOTA — BOGOTÁ (AP) — Colombian authorities reported on Thursday the capture of an Italian who is believed to be part of the 'ndrangheta mafia and is wanted by his country of origin for the crime of drug trafficking.
The 'ndrangheta mafia has accumulated power in Italy and abroad and is accused of importing cocaine into Europe.

Massimo Gigliotti was captured in Barranquilla, a city in the Colombian Caribbean, where the judicial and intelligence police followed him and found that he frequented a bar with an automatic submachine gun in sight, according to the Colombian police.

The 55-year-old man was wanted under an Interpol red notice, a request for countries around the world to locate and arrest a person with pending legal cases.

The director of the Colombian police, General William Salamanca Ramírez, said in a video released to the press from Vienna that Massimo was located thanks to police cooperation with the Italian authorities.

According to Salamanca, the captured person had been visiting South America since 2018 to “traffic cocaine” to Europe.

Gigliotti is accused of allegedly leading the distribution of cocaine hidden in legal merchandise on large vessels with a final destination in Italy.

Massimo Gigliotti remains a person linked, through some figures, to the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta but, in fact, he is not part of it, as often happens with the most powerful brokers.

I know there are many cases of ethnic Sicilians, Calabrians, and Neapolitans living in Rome and other regions and may have even been born there, but in this case I think Roberto Pannunzi may actually be of Roman origin.

Germany and the 17 conditions for extraditing the 'ndrangheta killer: «How many degrees are there in the cell? Will he have the newspapers?”
by Carlo Macrì
Valerio Salvatore Crivello, known as "The Palermo", sentenced to life imprisonment, will be transferred to Italy on condition that he can benefit from a "humane" prison regime. The lawyer: staying abroad is a victory, she could have a review

Valerio Salvatore Crivello: he was a masseur in Germany

Extradited yes, but on the condition that in Italy Valerio Salvatore Crivello, known as "The Palermo", sentenced to life imprisonment, can benefit from a "humane" prison regime. The German judicial authority , where the former fugitive had taken refuge (he was a masseur in a hotel in Sylt, where he was arrested in September) to escape life imprisonment for the murder of Pietro Serpa, which occurred in 2003, has placed stakes to deliver Crivello to Italian justice . He did so by submitting seventeen questions to the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro, which had issued a European arrest warrant for the "Palermitano", 'ndrangheta killer , to understand the state of Italian prisons. A real questionnaire that lists a series of conditions on which the outcome of the life prisoner's extradition will depend.

The issue of overcrowding
First of all the problem of overcrowding, then the healthcare treatment of prisoners, the lack of staff inside the penitentiaries. Presuppositions which the European Commission's report on the rights of prisoners had also emphasised, "beating" Italy for not having yet resolved these obligations. The judges of Schweing-Holstein, the state where Crivello had taken refuge after fleeing Italy, breaking his electronic bracelet, also asked questions about the «level of ventilation in the cell ; if Crivello will be able to have access to TV and newspapers ; the physical exercises that he can do during free time; the number of meals per day; the square meters of the cell where he will spend his detention; whether he will have a single cell; if the toilets "are included in the cell as well as separated from the sight of others".

Questions about the detention regime
Many questions: «Will the prisoner be able to work? And what kind of contact will he be able to have with family members? «The German authorities have set a deadline for knowing the outcome of their questions – says the lawyer Alessandra Adamo who, together with her German colleague Christopher Scharf, defends Crivello. "90 days have already passed and we are waiting to know how and when the judges of the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro will respond." For Valerio Salvatore Crivello, originally from Paola (Cosenza), detention in Germany would represent a victory "because - explains the lawyer - after fifteen years of detention there is a review of the sentence in that State".

The sentence reduction if he remained in Germany
Crivello has already served around nine years in prison in Italy : in six years, therefore, he could ask the German authorities for a new examination of his judicial position. «Opportunities that he would never have in Italy – explains the lawyer -. The former fugitive has always proclaimed himself innocent, explaining that he fled precisely because he believes his conviction was unjust." «We have appealed to the European Court of Human Rights to reopen the trial», confirms Alessandra Adamo. «A first appeal was considered inadmissible, but we presented a second one because for us the process did not take into account some situations, such as the stub carried out immediately after the murder, the result of which was negative, and the controversial statements of some repented.

A 60-year-old man was shot dead in Buccinasco, a town a few kilometers from Milan. The man was injured in the head, face and shoulder and was transported under cardio-circulatory arrest to the hospital in Rozzano. The shooting took place shortly after 10 in via della Costituzione, at the intersection with via Rodolfo Morandi.

This is Paolo Salvaggio, of Sicilian origin , considered a drug trafficking broker and involved in several anti-drug operations. The man, who died shortly after being transported to the Rozzano hospital, was under house arrest with an exit permit for two hours a day and was on his bike when he was hit by some bullets exploded by a scooter on which two people were traveling.

The Milan carabinieri investigate the matter and the Milan prosecutor on duty Carlo Scalas arrived in via della Costituzione in Buccinasco (Milan) for an inspection of the area

Salvaggio could go out for two hours a day and in those two hours, in the middle of the morning, he was killed not far from home, "I imagine as professionals - explains Mayor Rino Piuri - arrived by scooter, who shot him one last time when he was on the ground blow to the head ».

The mayor offered condolences to the ex-wife who was in tears and was talking to the carabinieri. Salvaggio had a history of drugs since 1992, and had relations with the 'Ndrangheta and apparently also with other Mafia families.

“Criminals and mafia families have been living here for decades. We have been saying this for decades. The proportion of premises seized from the mafias that we have here is higher than in Reggio Calabria, one for every thousand inhabitants, "he added. But until now the "business" of organized crime had remained under the radar: "The last person killed dates back to the end of the 1980s."

Salvaggio was, he explains, a sort of "bridge between the 'Ndrangheta and other mafia families" , hence the fear that, once the balance is blown, a sort of war for power will start

it seems it was not a Ndrangheta hit

Murder of Paolo Salvaggio «Dum Dum»: a man arrested in Sicily. «He is part of the Buccinasco commando»

The sixty-year-old was shot dead while he was cycling in the street on 11 October 2021. Having ruled out the mafia feud, the investigation is on the path of revenge after disagreements that developed in prison

Two years of investigation and the (partial) solution to the mystery of the fatal ambush on narcos Paolo Salvaggio , known as Dum Dum, killed at the age of 60 in Buccinasco on 11 October 2021 . The Carabinieri of the Homicide team of the Investigative Unit arrested a 45-year-old, Benedetto Marino (photo on the left) , accused of having participated in the execution phase of the ambush . In particular, he would have been the driver of one of the killers after he had abandoned the scooter used for the execution. But he would also have carried out an inspection in Buccinasco at the same time as the killers killed Salvaggio.

The arrest was carried out in Sicily , in the province of Catania , on the precautionary custody order of the Court of Milan. But the crime would have taken place in the Milanese underworld . Marino lives in Inveruno , in the Milan area. In particular, he would be linked to revenge after disagreements that developed in prison with other criminals ( in this article, the in-depth analysis of the unwritten law of the Milanese underworld ). Totally excluded scenarios of 'Ndrangheta and organized crime. Salvaggio, one of the most important narcos in Northern Italy, had trafficked drugs on behalf of the Barbaro-Papalia clan of Platì in the early 2000s. But the 60-year-old was killed out of revenge linked to personal matters .

When more than 1 person is involved in the killing (2 people on the scooter) it looks more like a mob hit than a personal beef.

it seems he had a beef with a group of sicilians inside Milan prison but they are not part of Cosa Nostra or other groups, apparently
