You watch all these Mob movies and in many of them you will hear singers such as Frank Sinatra playing in the background. What was it about singers such as Frank Sinatra that the mob loved? In the 60s you had music such as the Rolling Stones and Cream, but for some reason Hollywood has stereotyped the mob being big fans of Frank Sinatra and singers like him. I'm sure there's plenty of Mob guys who didn't really care for Frank and instead listened to the Rolling Stones or classic rock in the 1960s instead. Then once the 1970s hit tons of Mob guys were into funk and disco.

Discuss.

I think they liked him because he was a massive star who was from their neck of the woods and had many friends who were part of the street. There's nothing wrong with the Rolling Stones, but it's not like Mick Jagger is from Jersey

Simple, same reason they loved Dean Martin, Joe DiMaggio, Rocky Marciano, and Sophia Loren. They were Italians who were looked up to by others. It the same reason people of all races and ethnic groups have their icons. Sinatra was the big one to Italians in his time. He was not owned by the mob, and he had friends in all walks of life.

As to the music of Sinatra being played in mob films, remember the director is trying to set a mood.

Most Americans, including Mob guys, find celebrities and others who lead public lives fascinating, attractive, glamorous, rich and powerful, etc. For that matter, many Americans find Mob guys, especially those often in the news, fascinating, attractive, glamorous, rich and powerful, etc. Entertainers and politicians often cross paths with gangsters because of OC's involvement in movies, music, TV, lobbies, PACs, unions, etc. Sinatra was popular with Mafiosi for the reasons Jace and others said. It was a two-way street: Sinatra fancied himself a "tough guy," and liked to be around Mob guys.
Here's a link to an article that's relevant:

This goes for those who missed this documentary... Sinatra: Dark Star...it explains a lot on why he was loved and respected by both the Mafia and the US government during certain time periods...some new internet researchers (NOT from the following documentary) even stated that Sinatra mightve been a made member of the Mafia or at least a high level associate...afterall the Mafia had members who worked as government people, doctors, lawyers and so why not influential and quite lucrative musicians...just my two cents....

They loved him because he was quite handsome. Who doesn't like a goodlooking man?

He was Italian, a world famous legend, a great crooner and mob connected. Why wouldn't they love him?

Personally I can't listen to more than 2 or 3 Frank Sinatra songs in a row. He made great songs but they all sound pretty similar, have been replayed to death and are slow paced songs from a slow paced era.

I believe this to be the correct answer. He was a money maker for them and he worked for guys who were connected that were involved in the recording industry.

If he hadn't been Italian and the mob didn't have their hands in on him as an act, they wouldn't have given a fuck. Thats why they didn't give a fuck about the Rolling Stones because they were not a mob connected entertainment act. They owed nothing to the mob.

The entire Rat Pack band was owned by the Mob and they were getting a huge cut from their shows in Vegas as well. Like you said, the MOB owned Frank Sinatra. If he would have told them to fuck off he would have become trunk music. No doubt about it.

Indeed, but everybody knows Dino Paul Crocetti was THE man!

Dean Martin was a treasure, but Sinatra was no less of a treasure imo. When you listen to Sinatra, you feel some type of way. It's hard to describe his greatness in words, but this is a man who had every ear listening to him. He had it. He didn't outsell everybody for nothing

But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away

There is no evidence of the mafia owning him, that dumb. It's even dumber to say they owned the entire rat pack.

The RAT Pack performed at Casinos that were all owned by the MOB. They made big money there and the MOB got a huge cut of those profits!!!!!

The mob Owned the entertainment they chose to book at these casinos, that is a fact! Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin sucked the dicks of mob bosses, that is another fact.

BTW I have heard that Dean Martin was a fucking closet fag. Back then can you imagine if he would have came out as gay? He would have lost his career. So he sucked dick behind closed doors instead and many mob bosses were fucking queers as well.

I find that hard to believe. Dean Martin being gay is the type of thing that would have been revealed long ago. Mob bosses gay----who?

Don't be so naive to think there were no gay men who were mob bosses. All joking aside in my previous post, yes its rumored by many that Dean and Jerry Lewis were gay lovers.

Were Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis lovers?

Nonsense. 3 wives, countless mistresses and 8 children is a bit too much effort for any gay man to front don't you think?

The daughter of Meyer Lansky said she slept with Dean Martin.

Statements made by informant such as "Fischetti rather orders him (Sinatra)" and "Fischetti is Sinatra", or even "Sinatra being extremely powerful force in the entertainment field"....proves my previous statement that Sinatra was quite influential in the entertainment biz which was quite lucrative situation for the Mob during the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Second, the informant gives us the difference between giving an order and doing a favor. The file clearly states that Sinatra received orders from Joe Fischetti, which means someone (Sinatra) mightve being "employed" in one of the Outfits crews aka the Cicero/Fischetti crew. Again, theres a huge difference between a "favor" and "order". This statement can be backed up by the info in the second file in which Giancana threatened the Genoveses that if his proposal wasnt satisfied, they were going to take Sinatra with them (Chi Outfit) to any other place around Florida.

Again dont get me wrong since Im not saying that Sinatra was 100% made or even a high level associate or "entertaiment puppet", but still the previous files are giving me something to think about, meaning there might be some details in Sinatras career for which we still dont know anything about...the feds obviously suspected something and no wonder why theres a whole FBI file regarding his activities...
