Robert De Niro will star in the Warner Bros. mob drama "Wise Guys" from director Barry Levinson.

Wise Guys is a period piece that tells the story of Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, a pair of Italian Americans running two separate crime families during the mid-20th century. Genovese tried and failed to assassinate Costello in 1957, though the latter wound up taking his leave from the mob after being injured during the attempt on his life.

De Niro will be taking on both key roles in the film.

Oscar-nominated Goodfellas scribe Nicholas Pileggi penned the script—and though he also wrote the 1985 book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family on which Martin Scorsese’s aforementioned De Niro starrer is based, the classic film has no relation to Levinson’s. The Rocky franchise’s Irwin Winkler has boarded the project as a producer.

Like the idea but wish Deniro wasnt playing both characters..

No idea if it works but to see De Niro in two different roles is interesting from an actors point of view.
DeNiro is a hell of an actor it might work!

A story by Pileggi and Levinson directing is not bad either.

Sounds a bit strange but I'm sure it has a good script if he agreed to do something so weird. I'll look forward to it but if it is no good he should retire. He won't make a better gangster flick than Casino.

Vito and Frank were very different characters, that's interesting for DeNiro but they have to change him significantly to make it work I read filming took place in Ohio. With Warner Bros behind it they do have a nice budget I guess.

Not sure what dual batting both characters hoped to accomplish. Seems a gimmic more than trying to showcase an aging actor’s talent for playing mob roles
